The Game Changers (2018)
Supportive claims and mixed reviews
The Game Changers, directed by Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Louie Psihoyos, explores the way people eat and live while challenging conventional "wisdom" about protein and strength.
James Wilks, the film's storyteller and former professional UFC fighter, takes us across the globe in a quest for the truth about wellness, nutrition, strength and healing. On his journey, Wilks discovers the benefits of plant-based eating as well as the potentially detrimental effects of 'manly' meat consumption. To support his claims, he interviews legendary athletes, special ops soldiers, and award winning scientists.
The 'game changing' documentary takes a dive into Wilks personal life, as we watch the former UFC fighter and his father battle through serious injuries and health scares and recover by converting to a plant-based diet.
Through studies with pro NFL teams and interviews with vegetarian athletes like strongman Patrik Baboumian and gold medal cyclist Dotsie Bausch, the film unveils that the healthy protein humans need is found in plants, rather than meat. According to the film's findings, protein is important regardless of the source, but the protein that is going to help the body's strength, endurance, and recovery comes from plants.
The Game Changers debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018 and has since received mixed reviews by viewers with some calling the film's research surrounding protein and the importance of plant-based nutrition to be 'pseudoscience' and others praising the documentary for its 'eye opening' findings.
Ti mene nosis (2015)
Intertwining tales of family, life, love, and loss
You Carry Me, is a Croatian drama that follows the stories of three characters and their loved ones.
The film is written and directed by Croatian filmmaker Ivona Juka. Juka was supported throughout the development of the film by her sister and producer Anita Juka. Together, the sisters took on universal themes like family, life, love, and loss.
Set in a frigid Zagreb, Croatia's capital city, the story explores and intertwines the lives of three different families.
We're first introduced to tomboy Dora and her family. Dora (Helena Beljan) has a love for soccer. Her love; however, for her family is not as passionate and is more complex. Tensions rise as the police raid the family home and Dora's mother Lidija (Natasa Janjic Medancic) has an affair with her boss. Through Lidija and her job on the TV soap Prisoners of Happiness, we are introduced to Ives (Lana Baric) who is the soap's director and Natasa (Natasa Dorcic) who is the soap's producer.
When we meet Ives, she is on the edge of an emotional breakdown as she struggles to direct her long running TV series and take care of her Alzheimer's sufferer father Ivan (Vojislav Brajovic).
We run into a seemingly stable Natasa when she attempts to save a young man's life. As her story deepens, layers of pregnancy, infidelity, and terminal illness are revealed. As Natasa's world begins to end, she decides to confront her estranged father and find closure.
All three leading ladies carry their fathers, but neglect to carry and confront themselves.
La casa de papel (2017)
Long Winded Series of Mind games and Fine Strategies
La Casa de Papel or Money Heist is a Spanish television series which gained fame after Netflix acquired global streaming rights.
The drama-action series originally aired on Spanish TV in 2017, but failed to gain traction after season one. It wasn't until three years later when Netflix bought the show and added it in its international catalogue that Money Heist became 'the most-watched non-English language series on Netflix.' Today, it continues to receive the majority of its views and fans from France, Italy, Chile, Portugal, Brazil and Argentina.
The series follows eight thieves and one seemingly squeaky clean professor as they attempt to pull off the 'greatest heist in history.'
The mastermind behind the heist is the mysterious 'professor,' played by Spanish actor Álvaro Morte. His plan is not to be portrayed as criminals, but modern Robin Hoods for the people of Spain by printing and distributing billions of euros in the Royal Mint of Spain. To help him carry out his plan, he recruits eight skilled thieves with nothing to lose. Together, the group of thieves take hostages at the Royal Mint of Spain to aid in their negotiations with the authorities and gradually publicize their presence and purpose to the people of Spain. As more time elapses, the thieves prepare for a showdown with the police.
The series is full of mind games and fine strategies. There are now four parts to the acclaimed Spanish series and countless fans including celebrity fans like Stephen King and Karim Benzema.
