Leave the World Behind (2023)
Cheated. Great build up and suddenly stops
What a cracking start to a movie. I love end of days type films where the world breaks down. Apocalyptic style stories are a dime a dozen these days, but this one did a great job of building the tension until its massive disappointment of an ending. It just stops, like the makers ran out of money or something. Such a disappointment.
I can't give it lower than 6 out of 10 because the acting is stellar from all the cast. The cinematograpy is spectacular, as is the soundtrack. It has so much suspense. It just needs a proper finale, that's all. Julia Roberts is particularly good in this and I'm not her biggest fan. I wish Ethan Hawk had a bigger role, too.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Far too cheesy for my liking
I have to admit, I don't mind cheesy movies. I quite like them, but not on this level. I really wanted to like Rebel Moon; it should be right up my street. However, the way it's been made, the dialogue, the characters and plot are so contrived, I couldn't bring myself to give it more than 4 stars.
It's a shame: Charlie Hunnam's not in it enough, the dialogue is too much tell and not enough show, and altogether this is one terrible movie, although I did sit through the whole thing, so it's not one star worthy. The villains looking like nazis, complete with caps and overcoats, was a stretch too far for me. This should be Sci fi. Surely the filmmakers have an imagination and don't need to resort to mimicking history?
If you're expecting an amazing Sci fi / fantasy extravaganza, look elsewhere. This isn't it.
Open 24 Hours (2018)
Tense from start to finish
Very surprised at just how good this was. Didn't have much expectation beforehand if I'm honest. This is an edge of your seat, foreboding kind of movie, where you know something awful is about to happen and the anticipation is almost too much. Lol.
Great performances and a really creepy setting. The gas station is almost a character all its own. Highly recommend this film.
It's not overly original, but the characters are. I've seen movies like this one not made half as well. I love the fact it's not another teen slasher; they've been done to death, if you'll excuse the pun.
If you're in the mood for a decent slasher movie, pick this one. You won't regret it.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Cheesy but I loved it
Milla Jovovich rarely disappoints. This is a cheesy film, but I couldn't help but live it. What is there to not love? It has Milla, Ron Pearlman and big arse monsters. Proper Saturday night movie.
Creed II (2018)
Every bit as good the fifth time round
I love this movie so much. Creed is as loveable as Rocky. Up against Viktor Drago, this brings both franchises together nicely. It wraps things up enough for Creed to go it alone in the next film, in development. Michael B Jordan is amazing in this one. Looking forward to Creed 3.
It Waits (2005)
Bit of fun on a Wednesday night
Well, this was entertaining. I wouldn't say it was great, but it held my attention. The monster was reasonably well done, the acting wasn't entirely cardboard. The main characters were cool. There was a scene very similar to Jeepers Creepers, which was either a wink to it, or a blatant rip-off. Enjoyed this movie, and would recommend to anyone interested in a bit of a cheesy horror film.
No One Gets Out Alive (2021)
Original creature feature
Really enjoyed this movie. Atmospheric, eery and full of doom you know is coming. Great cast of characters, portrayed with great care by the actors. Even the special effects were good for a low budget film. The creature wasn't amazing, but intrigued me. Would definitely recommend. 👍👍👍
Spontaneous (2020)
Funny, original and surprisingly good
I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this. The main character, Mara, was witty and entertaining, even during the dark ending. Loved her. Really original film. Not sure I've ever seen a movie about spontaneous combustion, although they didn't really combust, more pop like a balloon of blood and bones.
If you're not sure about watching this, I don't blame you, but I was pleasantly surprised at the acting and quality of the movie as a whole. Give it a go, you won't regret it.
Muscle (2019)
Great build up. Where was the climax?
This would have scored more, had there been an ending. Great acting, really atmospheric throughout, until the lame, non existent ending. It just cuts out. Where was the big confrontation. Feel a bit cheated, to be honest. Craig Fairbrass was amazing, as usual.
