Hard Candy (2005)
Silly
This movie really sucked. Even my Granny would laugh at this "film" - and she usually only watches those old black and white movies!!! I guess I could sit through this film with a hot chick, if I knew I would be getting laid afterwards. But really, couldn't the producers have chosen a more attractive "14-year-old" protagonist for this film? That ugly, dyke-haired skank made my joystick retract into my belly. Come on, if you want me to sit through 2 hours of preachy bullsh*t, at least show me some beautiful t*ts and @ss! Oh well, sometimes we waste a couple of hours watching a pointless movie because ..... what the f#ck else would we be doing?
Donnie Darko (2001)
One of My Favorite Movies
SPOOKY! I love time travel movies, where the hero or heroine is doomed no matter what they choose to do. I also enjoy offensive language in film, especially when it is blurted out at just the right time. Vulgarity, vandalism, overbearing authority, teen angst, psychotherapy, time travel, uncomfortable silences - this film has it all! It's also VERY SPOOKY! It's the perfect cult film to watch every Halloween - along with many other great psychological/horror films. I love it so much, I cannot find fault with this movie. Every artist plays his/her part perfectly. If you grew up in white suburbia during the 1980's, you will feel like you are back home! This film will lure you, entertain you, trap you, excite you, disgust you, and enthrall you! It's like an emotional roller-coaster that swoops through popular American culture, young lust, clinical depression, bold individualism, the deteriorating nuclear family, and the supernatural without losing the viewer's interest for a second. I loved it.
Unbreakable (2000)
Artistic film that pays off in the end!
I don't normally enjoy big Hollywood movies, but this movie is different. This is an artistic film, and even the camera angles are interesting. Unbreakable is an explicit tribute to popular US comic book art and the the vast underground subculture of loyal comic fans, while simultaneously an implicit indictment of the naive hero worship that we all inevitably fall into. Shyamalan uses common, everyday situations to open the doors of our imagination and slowly pull us into the depths of his sentimental psyche. Shyamalan's greatest strength is his innate sensitivity and understanding of ordinary human interactions. Every relationship and every conversation in this movie has a purpose, without seeming contrived. Shyamalan is a modern writer/director, and sometimes his scenes seem plodding, but every scene is a necessary step toward the ultimate truth. My suggestion is to watch this movie with no expectations, fully understanding that the film is filled with symbolism and metaphors. This movie is a comic book brought to life in the form of a modern tragedy.
Evil Eyes (2004)
Acceptable low-budget psychological horror story
The first time I watched this film on Sci-Fi channel, I lost interest halfway through because I thought it was gratuitously graphic and violent. But, upon a second late-night viewing, I realized that the plot is a real mind-bender. I didn't have enough patience the first time I watched it. Also, the second time, I noticed how hot the main actress is. She looks plain, but she is really sexy. The primary actors do a great job, but some of the peripheral roles are filled by amateurs who really make the film look cheap and self-aware. Compared to some other low-budget movies though, Evil Eyes has well-written, believable dialog.
