Scanners II: The New Order (1991)
A great sequel to the original
Scanners II was released in the late 80's or early 90's, it was one of the last true low budget horror films before my town turned into big budget studio depot for films. Scanners II is both visually stunning with some great opening shots of Montreal and has a great comic book style plot. Yeah sure the connection to the first Scanners was kinda cheesy in execution, but this film is alot faster in pace and has more action than the very slow paced Scanners. The FX by Mike Smithson are great and very realistic before our dependence to all that is CGI. But overall the performances are good but nothing to write home about. Overall Scanners II has good cinematography and a clever little story of world domination to entertain fans as well as the casual viewer. I suggest to anyone to check it out and be totally entertained for 100 minutes.
Blade II (2002)
Vampire action at it's finest
Del Toro's Blade II has all the fixings for a terrific bloody vampire cocktail. Wesley Snipes returns in his comic book dark hero mode as Blade once again. Blade II picks up pretty much right after the first film's last point and introduces a new and creepy vampire foes to the mix. Blade II keeps the action going full blast and the introduction of the Blood Pack adds a new level of character development to the story and a new element for Blade's character to contend with. The story is not the best and some of the plot twists are little contrived by this is not Shakespeare either just a film comic book translation to film. The special make-up FX are wonderful adding a sinster edge to the Reapers that clearly outclasses anything in the first film. The CGI effects are not nearly as overdone as the first film either which is nice. Del Toro's direction is solid for the film that he is making here. Blade II is a much more darker and fun film with a gruesome punch that should please both the horror and action film crowds. A Definate must see for the year.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
One of the Greatest Horror Films
George Romero's Dawn of the Dead is one of the best zombie/horror films of the last 25 years. In many cases just as classic as the original B&W Night of the Living Dead. Dawn of the Dead's greatest points that makes it stand out from all the other clones and copies is a ugly picture of society in decline. Lack of communication and misunderstanding of the enemy is clearly the point of the film. Sure the FX are a little dated by today's CGI laden epics of recent years, but there is a underlying creepiness and sadness to the film that cannot be caputured yet by a computer. But overall the story and the atmosphere that Romero has created for the film is the light that most other zombie film strive for. The film's satire of consumerism and greed are great and setting in a mall of all places is just classic. So I hope everyone can sit back and enjoy the campy music and afros and bellbottoms of the 70's and enjoy probably one of the most dramatically sound and overall masterpieces of the late 70's before zombie films became comic horror disasters. One of the best of the 70's.
