Zhen · San guo wu shuang (2021)
Movie based on a videogame based on a novel based on history
I have read the books and watched various movies on the Three Kingdoms. The epic is too vast to fit into one film. Even the movie Red Cliff needed two parts and it was only based on a single event. So for someone who is not familiar with the story, this can seem rushed with too much information and meaning squeezed into one scene or expression.
This is not the best movie to represent the intricate political and military strategies of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms or the true history of the time, but it does a pretty good job representing the game Dynasty Warriors which is a fun hack and slash game with fantasy, cool moves and graphics and where heroes have god-like powers and can knock down scores of enemies in a single blow. If they were all indeed so powerful, there would be no point for them to own armies of blade fodder and there would be little need for strategy if you can just cake walk through a formation.
Overall, I think they did well considering that this was a fun live-action movie based on the game and did as much as they could to stay grounded to the legend. Some people are complaining that the actors were too young, but at this point of the story, they were, so in my opinion it makes sense.
History lovers may not like how the story is represented. Game fans may not like the portions that stick to the book/history (ex. How women are represented in the movie ex. Diaochan in the game with a chain whip leading armies into battle rather than her critical role in the story: to drive a fatal wedge between Lu Bu and Dong Zhuo to bring them both down).
But if you are a fan of the game or just want to watch a bad-a** version of the story, then this movie is pretty cool.
