La La Land (2016)
Kissing happiness of a goodbye.
Without you expecting, it comes at you fast and you do not resist the temptation but to fall for it. As you look it in the eyes, the feeling hits and your heart smiles. Turn around, and as you walk away, look back, and smile once more.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
They took the risk, it's flawed but not bad
4 dimensions of 3 different multiverses is quite hard to handle with. With so much space, time and people on screen, it's quite hard to balance the moments of action, fantasy and emotion and also deeply explore each one of them.
It's a film full of cliches and even though some were thoroughly annoying, I felt the objective here was to correct/explain some mistakes made by previous movies - which they did.
In the end the movie has a very simple message, and it's nothing new. The movie doesn't feel lengthy at all, but the highlight of the movie is 90 minutes wait so that the cinema can explode to joy with the flashbacks of their favorite Spider-men. In a way it's kinda disappointing to say this, but the movie itself isn't great if you take the emotion of Spider-Man watchers seeing all 3 together.
The plot is a good idea, but the movie felt shallow. Even Aunt May's death was so overly explained that it wasn't as emotionally fulfilling as it should. And if you hadn't watched previous Spider-man's, then you'll be on the dark about most lines, scenes, villains (who are barely explored for who they are here), and really the movie will be just an ordinarily long marvel superhero thing.
What I mean is, I mostly enjoyed the ride - as Spider-Man fan. If I have to go with my neutral side, it's got a few unsurpassable flaws which wont help but ruin the movie for some. As balanced as I can be, I'll give this Spider-Man a 7/10 + the joy of rewatching Tobey and Andrew with the suit.
House of Gucci (2021)
Overstuffed
A movie which just extends on forever, especially towards the end, dragging itself on with seemingly unnecessary details.
Visually appealing, and unlike most people are saying, I don't think anyone in the cast was particularly bad, although no one was excellent either.
The ending was undramatically raw, and unfortunately I don't mean this to be good.
Overall, despite Adam Driver's, I am awkward type charm, the beautiful scenarios and the fake Italian accent, 6/10 is a fair rating.
Dune (2021)
Villenueve's cinematographic greatness, but that's about it...
After some expensively long 2 hours and 30 minutes, I still don't know what this movie is about.
A tone of characters and ideias are introduced in the first moments of the movie, but other than Paul Atreides and his parents, there is no real development of any other characters (maybe because everyone ends up dying).
I also though the filmmakers played slightly confusing ideas. They tried to incorporate too many events (which I am guessing are in the book) on little detail and thereby failed to express their main points after constraining the movie to the entanglement of confusing developing ideas.
Zendaya is terribly overhyped at the launch of this film. Obviously, there's going to be a second part, where everyone expects her presence to be more relevant, given that in this movie her role could be filmed in 2 or 3 days and I could have played it myself. Furthermore, when she does finally appear in the present action, her entry is insignificantly dry.
By now, no one can deny how beautiful Villenueve's movies are. From arrival, to blade runner 2049, this is another worthy beauty, despite feeling a bit too overwhelming sometimes.
Jason Momoa (Duncan) is underdeveloped. With the potential to become one of the films most appealing characters, his presence is always left in-between the light and the shadow until he becomes somewhat of the failed sacrifice. His death should have, dramatically and emotion wise, given a much bigger impact to the film, but it simply doesn't because of how under-explored and developed his character was throughout.
Rebecca Ferguson, gives without a doubt, the best performance in the movie.
No Time to Die (2021)
A weak movie, and an even weaker Bond movie
I might just as well start by expressing my utter disappointment in what might have just become the worst James Bond movie ever produced apart from one condition... that this is the last 007 film ever produced. You simply cannot kill the myth, the legend, the protagonist and keep going with this series. The killing of James Bond simply needs to be the end of the 007 series, you can't replace him without loosing the whole essence of the thing. And don't tell me he'll e reborn from the ashes in the next movie because that is simply pathetic.
Now as a movie, it wasn't great. Some good action, a bit of romance, drama and British humour. But it simply missed having some desire throughout its quite lengthy 2:45 hours. The film simply doesn't make you want anything from it. The cinematography and visual effects were fairly good. The scriptwriting was not all,
with predictable lines, dialogue which felt shortcut and other which had no apparent meaning to it.
Malik, as good of an actor as he has proven to be, was a pretty weak Bond villain. Ana de Armas pulled it off with her performance, really adding something unique to the movie, but, despite all the marketing and talking about her, the role she played was annoyingly irrelevant and way too short.
Daniel Craig was a wonderful James Bond but his performance here was far, far from the others. It looked as if he quit being the himself Bond to be another. Honestly, had this been his first performance as James Bond, and I don't think he'd have pulled it to be on another Bond movie.
The whole plot around which the film has based itself doesn't really make any sense, and it's beyond any type of Bond fantasies I have seen.
The portrayal of M in this film is very confusing and Q provided the worst set of gadgets in 007's history. Madeleine was clearly in the wrong movie apart from the first sequence of events which make up the first 20 minutes or so... and then she really doesn't belong in the rest of the film. The only part I could make any sense of was Felix's death, although, the way he dies, being partnered up with an undercover villain,
felt quite unadjusted.
The "new 007" plays such a bad role, I really hope they don't follow up with this idea if they are to make another Bond movie. There simply isn't any profound exploration of this character, she's so vague and limited in the movie,
it's actually shocking.
To conclude I have two options here: either the producers of this film have no clue how to produce a Bond movie because they never actually watched one before, or they didn't capture its essence and therefore failed incredibly with this one. Or, they though they had the bright idea to revolutionise the series and just ended up killing the myth.
Sadly, this was a disappointment.
Public Enemies (2009)
The expectation kills it...
The cast is good, I think both main characters have firmly accomplished their role in the film, even though I think they could have given Christian Bale a little more main character protagonism. Either way, the main thing here, is how you're always expecting something and, you usually get nothing in return. The film is bland - I think on purpose - but the overall effect hasn't quite worked out, and this film could have been a lot more. Obviously they have tried to base it from real facts, but the plot could have done with a little more suspense in a few places. Still, do watch the film, it has some real good scenes and acting, and the ride is fairly smooth throughout. 7/10.
Don't Breathe (2016)
Ok...but
Interesting cinematography, the photography is good all the way. However, given the vagueness of the plot, despite the fast flow thriller, the film gradually looses tension, becomes predictable with excessive plot twists towards the end, and eventually just becomes boring and tiring to watch. For most of the time, the acting is level with the expectation of such film. 6/10 does this film justice on the quality of the image and not the disappointment of the repetitive storyline.
Me Before You (2016)
An adorable..."Half-Remake"
Clearly inspired by The Intouchables, this is a more modern romantic version. The film is based on the excellent performances by the two main characters and an emotional plot, which may or may not touch get to you. Not anything new, not blowing, but overall a nice watch. 7/10 at the expense of this not being a new idea, whereas it could have achieved an 8/10. Not a need to watch, but make the cut if you someday catch in on Tv.
Ocho apellidos catalanes (2015)
Misunderstood by most ratings and reviews
This film is completely misunderstood. The plot is supposed to be the joke of a satirical comedy of Spanish culture and traditions. Most people who are unaware of the Spanish culture find it, understandably, hard to understand the movie. It isn't offensive. It isn't rude either. It's an ironical satire where the plot serves as the film's mere orientation towards its purpose. It's a good laugh with some really good acting by the cast. 8/10 totally recommend.
