The X-Files (1993–2018)

A TV Masterpiece!
20 July 2023
This show is still just as entertaining all these years later! I have recently began re-watching the series and I forgot how good it really is. The writing, especially in the first 5 seasons, is perfect. Whether you are into the overarching alien/UFO storyline or the self-contained creature features, the show is truly great!

Duchovny and Anderson as FBI Agents Mulder and Scully give great performances and have tremendous chemistry. If you have never seen the show I urge you to watch the pilot and give it a shot, you won't regret it! If you have seen it then you know how good it is and it gets even better when you rewatch it!

Malignant (I) (2021)

Overrated but worth a laugh
20 July 2023
I sat down to watch this after hearing about how "amazing" this "horror" movie was. After watching it I realized my expectations were much, much too high. A quarter of the way in I decided to watch it through the lens of an 80s B horror/comedy. This made it much more easy to digest and I about died laughing at the twist ending.

If you keep your expectations low you should be entertained at the very best and possibly disappointed in Wan's latest horror movie. If this was directed by anyone else I wouldn't have had such high expectations. To be clear, this is not a movie in the same category as Insidious or Saw but if there's absolutely nothing else to watch give it a go. If I haven't been clear about this, keep your expectations somewhere around shin high and you'll be fine.

Don't miss this movie!
19 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know how many times I passed this movie before finally watching it and boy am I glad I saw it! Cage and Pascal is a pairing I never would have thought would play so well. If you're in the mood for an action movie, this one has it. A buddy comedy? Check. A drama where characters find themselves and make meaningful changes? Check again.

Cage plays a version of himself, loud and self centered he is hired to attend a party by Pascals character. Pascals character is a HUGE Cage fan while Cage is at first not happy to be "stooping" to attend the party.

They quickly form a very close bond before Cage is contacted by the CIA who let him know his new friend is not what he seems. They recruit Cage to help them find the location of a politicians kidnapped daughter. What follows is hilarious, sometimes touching and consistently funny.

I hadn't seen a decent Nic Cage movie in a very long time but I am glad decided to watch this one. Cage has made over a dozen straight to video movies over the last decade of mostly forgettable garbage. Due to his spending habits and an outstanding tax bill he was forced to take whatever part came his way. All of this is reflected and addressed directly in the movie giving it a wonderful meta quality that only adds to the movies charm.

Pascal plays his character note perfect. From Mandalorian to The Last of Us I was used to seeing the mostly serious side of Pascal. This movie gives him room to stretch his comedy chops and he doesn't disappoint! He should definitely try and do some more comedy movies and I would love to see him team up with Cage again!

It may seem overboard to rate this a 9/10 but when you compare it to the hot garbage Cage has been in over the last decade it seems like a masterpiece.

Maniac (2018)
9/10
Superb and one heck of a ride!
12 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Maniac follows two strangers, Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgram (Jonah Hill) who volunteer to take part in a drug trial that claims will cure them of ALL mental health problems. During the study each participant is given a series of pills which help them explore various corners of their minds to heal by facing (literally)hurried traumas of their past. Stone and Hill both deliver truthful performances of pain and suffering. Over 10 episodes, each character must face the past that haunts them and the pain that hinders them from moving forward.

Cary Joji Fukunaga Directs every episode bringing a steady hand to a story that could have easily fallen apart. Maniac is not easy to characterize but that's okay. I sat down to watch the first episode with little knowledge of what it was about and ended up finishing it in one sitting. This series has something for everyone from comedy, drama, sci-fi and action.

I promise to those who watch it the majority of you will love it.

Spiderhead (2022)
6/10
A poor man's Maniac,
12 July 2022
Spiderhead has a whopper of an idea but fails to pick that baton up and run with it. I enjoyed the movie and it's very offbeat feel. It kept me entertained but it's a one and done movie that leaves you feeling unfulfilled.

There is so much they could have done with that premise and the characters. Instead we get something that while sometimes entertaining and okay the rest feels a little anticlimactic. I would still recommend watching it once if you don't have anything better to do. Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller do a solid job and have great chemistry. Director Joseph Kosinski undoubtedly has talent and vision for how his movies look.

Kosinski graduated from Columbia University with a degree in architecture and is also an adjunct professor where he focuses on 3D design. The design work in Tron and also Spiderhead are wonderfully executed. I only brought up the directors education to say that perhaps he would be better suited as a cinematographer or set designer. I was entertained momentarily with his movies but always felt there was something missing.

My apologies for the rambling (twin babies that don't have the same feeding schedule) review but I would tell anyone to watch it once. You'll be entertained then quickly forget about it once it's over.....if you want a more entertaining experience and have some time I'd watch Maniac (on Netflix).

Christian version of The Room...
13 May 2021
Man, the acting is just awful. Awful. Everyone is so stiff and wooden including Mr. Cameron. I don't know if the script was just that bad but it is extremely off putting. There is nothing redeeming about this movie. If you have a message there are thousands of ways to get that across without it being presented like this. Trust me and avoid this movie.
