Inside Man (2022)
Waste of cast
Abominable waste of an amazing cast. This is one of the single most stupid scripts that's ever been put into production. The escalation from the inciting incident on the Tennant plotline is so extreme and unbelievable that it's nearly impossible to watch. The Tucci plotline is dull and cartoonish at the same time. The cast works as well as they can with the silly lines they've been given. Honestly on par with Kristen Bell's Woman in the Window parody - there's no way this could really be considered a serious drama; it must be comedy. Moffat has always been convinced of his own cleverness, and stains his characters with the same smarmy attitude. Don't bother watching.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
YA novel adaptation
I think Netflix marketing messed this up; the book it's based on is a very melodramatic YA novel about a self-obsessed "misunderstood" 15-year-old girl. The material is a very silly idiot plot. Netflix, by centering Emily Deschanel, has framed this as an adult horror story, and it just isn't. So people are furious at all the teen drama. But, well, it is a teen drama.
The script aligns with that context; people exclusively make stupid decisions. In the book, Mom and Dad's dysfunction was understandable through the lens of their teen girl child. When the adults are the main characters, it doesn't work. Dad refuses to consider an offer on his debt-hole property because his wife suggests the person? Psychiatrist Mom can't possibly at all be qualified, the way she acts.
The book is mediocre teen drama, fairly faithfully adapted. The perspective is off, and the marketing matches.
Not bad viewing for a silly light horror mystery. As a teen series, it's pretty good! Very few scary or gory bits (like, one jump scare? A photograph or two of a cut on the cult girl's back?).
The Little Things (2021)
Denzel did his best
Hope Denzel has a good deep tissue massage booked after carrying this film. The rest of the cast were dreadful; Jared Leto and Rami Malek were unwatchable. The script was appalling and the story made no sense. Honestly, things were going OK until the fixation on Leto's character. Then things just became absurd. First half OK; second half had to be a parody. Every cliché in the book.
I have to reach a character limit to post this review but it doesn't say how many characters I have left until I hit that minimum limit. So I'm just going to type some stuff here until it lets me post. Seriously, there's not that much to say about this film. Tries to be Se7en, ends up in Scream territory. Stupid movie. Pleasure to see Denzel as always.
