To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Atticus, simply a gentleman
I've seen this movie and read the book. I could not tell which one impressed me the most.
Atticus Finch, a man forced to do "what's right" (in spite of his own son, at the end), fighting with the weapons he had at hand, doing all in his way to have his kids proud to look up at him. On his own.
The respect people from Maycomb felt for him is clearly noticed when Tom Robinson's trial ends, and all the African American community stands up just because he is passing by. Breathtaking. Simply exciting.
He represents Defeat (with a capital D) when learns Tom has been shot.
I'll never forget one of his sayings: "you can not really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view".
Quiz Show (1994)
One of the best movies I've ever seen
I think this is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I also think the conflict within Charles van Doren is perfectly showed along the film. And his motivation. You can feel his disappoint whenever he is introduced to someone new, as he's told: "are you related to Mark van Doren, the Pulitzer prize winner?"
The challenge, just for giving it a name, between Charlie and Dick Goodwin is very well described. Two elevated minds, vis-a-vis, in an equal struggle of geniuses.
And Charlie´s father reaction when he learns the truth... and Charlie´s remorse and how he can't tell the truth to his father.
As Charlie says at the end: "I've gone too high on borrowed wings". The thing is he had wings on his own, but pretty hidden.
An Affair to Remember (1957)
A must-see
Definitely, this is a must.
Nickie and Terry are two not-so-young, a little disappoint with their lives, but eager to find someone to love. Even though they both are apparently happy, each one in a established relationship, they feel there must be something else. And they find it!
They notice how compatible they are just after that scene with Nickie´s grandma, Jalou (I hope this name is well spelled), in her idyllic house facing the Mediterranean.
So you can understand how discouraged is Nickie when things don't go the "right way".
Besides all that, I think Cary Grant is THE leading man, always forever. There will not be another Cary Grant. Unforgettable.
Cenizas del paraíso (1997)
Thanks for the update
I've seen this movie from Argentina, and I think my opinion can be divided in two parts: the script and way the director guides us through it.
The script is an excellent thriller, with all the characters very well designed. The three brothers and their getting along with the father... you can feel their pain for his death. I think the scene where all they four dance that Greek music is breath-taking.
And the way the director puts us in the plot, with all the flashbacks. You never get lost. Separating the story in parts, it makes all much more clear.
Finally, thanks a lot for the update. I was sure Francisco Muro was not a judge.
