Dead Cert (2010)
Gangsters meets Vampires
This movie wasn't entirely terrible but it certainly won't be embracing my DVD player for quite a while. It semi works as a gangster flick, in brief a rival gang tries to take over an established patch. This has worked in the past and could have possibly worked now. Considering the cast of British stars that appear in it, Craig Fairbrass, jason Flemyng and Dexter fletcher to name a few.
But then... The vampire bit seems to pop up. It feels like they couldn't really pick a decent way for the movie to go and decided it would be a good idea to throw a couple of bloodsuckers in. The culminating scene near the end of the movie becoming like a poor mans from dusk till dawn.
It falls slightly short of a gangster flick and slightly short of a horror flick it's one of those that I'm sure you will be on the fence about. The only real qualm i had with thee movie is billy murray's romanian character... Without a hint of a romanian accent Try the film by all means but don't get your hopes up to high.
Devil's Playground (2010)
Not 28 days later... But not bad at all
A zombie apocalypse happens upon London... Now stop right there do not compare this movie to 28 days later, this is certainly not as good but in my opinion not far off.
It is a very entertaining movie which i enjoyed very much, the characters could have used a bit more zing in their step and the story could have had a bit more drive but you cant have everything for a low budget movie. My two problems with this movie were however, the zombies. Thet are all thin, athletic free runners! Apparently during a zombie apocalypse all the fat and old people in Britain seem to vanish. Secondly the acting talent of Danny dyer, Now i don't mind some of his movies by any means however he just looks lost and uncomfortable with this role right until the end of the movie where he displays a little spark.
Howvere the positives do out-way the negatives i would recommend this for fans of the zombie horror genre and of British horror movies
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Stylish, cool and entertaining
An enjoyable movie throughout. It is shot well, directed well and acted well.
Kieran culkin turns in a performance his brother wishes he could do, and Mary Elizabeth winstead plays the part of cute yet confused weird chick down to a t. The remainder of the cast do well in there supportive roles and the roles of the ex's (The premise of the story) are played very well
The story is a simple comic book easy to follow plot and although Michael cera is perfect for the role there is just something about him that makes me want to him every time he speaks.
Worth watching for the randomness of the whole affair
The Zombie Diaries (2006)
One for true fans of the genre
Certainly a slow paced movie with little happening to really keep your attention for a long part of the movie. Once the movie really realises its potential you either get it or you don't. If you compare this to the Diary of the dead my money is on this all of the time. The characters are very basic but the tension and the overall premise of the movie are done well. This is however a film for the true zombie genre fan and will fail to please pretty much anybody else, but upon saying that speaking as a fan of said genre even i struggled to maintain patience with the movie. The saving grace is that this is a movie made by first time movie makers and to appreciate the hard work and effort they have put it is satisfaction enough
Splinter (2008)
An entertaining and freaky movie
To be fair i was half expecting this movie to fall short of the mark especially when i read that it had been reviewed as "The evil dead meets the thing". However thats not a million miles from the truth. The setting is a simple premise and the characters although not over exposed in their roles play them without too much negativity. A little more back story would have been nice not only for the characters but also for the overall 'evil' element that appears in the movie. The movie is shot well however i am torn between the shaky camera effects that are used when the creatures (shall we say) appear. On one hand it adds to the excellent job at making them seem very disturbing, but on the other hand it makes you feel a little cheated at not seeing them in there entirety. All in all however this is in my eyes a worth watchable film, the creatures are down right freaky and should be watched for them alone.
Altitude (2010)
A giant...Thing... in the sky...Not as bad as it sounds actually
A watchable yarn that doesn't quite disappoint but neither does it reach the point where it can be classed as good. If there was ever an average sort of movie this could be it. The premise is simple but original in a certain sense. The main point in the movie for me is the acting. Now talk about stereotypical overblown American teens, Oh there all there, the arrogant jock, the musical emo kid, the love struck couple this is what began to annoy me after say the first fifteen minutes. If you can look past this though the rest of the film seems to work OK, and the characters do display a shine of talent as the movie goes on all except for the main guy who remains constantly with a look on his face like he is not sure he is even supposed to be in the movie Its shot quite well considering the small location required and the effects are not to shabby at all. If you've'e got nothing better to do then this is the film for you.
