The First Lady (2022)
a case where the producer figures she has to be the star
Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson where cast perfectly, performances were very good and enjoyed the scenes with these 2 actresses.
However the scenes with Viola Davis were almost to the point of being unbearable - she insisted on doing some weird thing with her lips that very quickly became annoying.
Michelle Obama in my opinion was totally miscast and because of this I rated it so low, it is a pity because the other 2 ladies were very good, and the Michelle Obama story would have been interesting but Ms Davis' overly acted lips spoiling it for me.
Reacher (2022)
This is the one for real Reacher fans
For all of you that have read the Lee Child books - Alan Ritchson does fit the part of Jack Reacher.
The acting is quite good and the action sequences are done well.
The first season follows the book closely, they managed to keep some humor in as well because as Reacher fans we know when he's not killing or beating the crap out of someone Reacher is a real funny guy.
With 26 novels so far I am looking forward to a long run for this well done series - cannot wait for season two.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
The power of the hype
I'm on the fence, was very slow to tell the story but the plot line was very good - would have stopped watching about halfway through but watched because of the high ratings and hype, I'm glad I did the end was good but I question if the journey was worth the end.
The acting from Dunst, Plemons and Smit-McPhee was very wooden, and Cumberbatch was good at best. Were a few scenes that were really not necessary and added to the slow grind of the film.
If it had been told differently not sure if the ending would have had the same meaning - very good ending just torture to get there. Rating it low to bring the higher ratings to where they should be, film is maybe a 5 at best.
The Last Son (2021)
Not a good thing to say
There was nothing good about this movie - the dialog was pitiful which didn't matter because the sound quality was terrible - the acting was very poor and the only reason I gave it 1 instead of 0 was it was in english.
Goliath (2016)
Had to rate so low because of the overall decline of the series.
The first season was superb! Overall flow, story line and acting were great.
I will say the acting did remain consistent, but the flow and storyline declined with each season.
The decline was evident when they added a "song and dance " into an episode in each season, totally cheapened those seasons overall.
In the final season you need only watch 1/2 of episode 7 and episode 8 to basically get all you need. They seemed to overfill each episode with these "Hadleyville" flashbacks, which became rather annoying after the first episode. I also found every scene that wasn't a "flashback" or court scene, was always raining and slightly out of focus which seemed to leave me in a sad, depressed mood for the entire episode.
Overall I'd rate the seasons as follows - season 1 probably a 9, season 2 a 5, season 3 a 3, and a 2 for season 4.
Kate (2021)
Great action scenes
I have given this film quite a high rating for a movie with a plot we have all seen before.
Mary Elizabeth Winsteads acting deserves the higher rating, the film flows well and the action scenes are very well done.
For a story we are familiar with, it was very well done and is definitely worth the watch.
The Green Knight (2021)
The Green Not!
When I saw a trailer of the movie I was so looking forward to seeing it. I really like Dev Patel (his performance through the 3 seasons of Newsroom was so great) I was so disappointed.
There is no action in the film, the dialog comes to you in disjointed segments and is so agonizingly slow, you really want to hit FF on the remote just to get it moving a little.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Was sadly disappointed.
The movie seemed a little slow and tentative, never really "gets on it's feet". Trying to tell a story but feels like a bunch of disjointed vignettes not quite rolling into a story.
I must say I found the voice of Michael Imperioli
as Christopher Moltisanti adding comments very tacky.
And I am sorry, but the whole black thing with the riots seemed to me to be an effort at "political correctness" because it never seems to really mesh with the overall concept.
Overall the acting was good, and if the names were changed and had not been touted as a Soprano prequel it would have given it a higher rating.
Mayday (2021)
beware, time you will never get back
Mayday, Mayday I've just seen the movie Mayday! This film was so pointless and made very little sense. Sure you artsy fartsy types are going to say "you didn't get the deeper meaning of the film" - girl is trying to kill herself and changes her mind - there, point of movie in less than a sentence. I watched the movie hoping it would get better, and it never did.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Subtracted 1 Star
An admission before I go further - I have not read the books so I cannot attest to how well the series followed the storylines.
I will say for a group of actors and actresses I was not familiar with, I was quite impressed with the performances.
As I said the acting was well done and the effects were very good as well, if there is a second season I will most likely watch.
I would have given the series 7 Stars but subtracted one because I felt the love scene between Kit Young and the stable-boy was gratuitous, it did not further the storyline and was probably thrown in to be P. C. with a very small portion of the population.
Overall though it is a good watch.
Without Remorse (2021)
Flavor of the day
First of all if you are a Tom Clancy fan, this film is nothing like the book. The major problem with this and a lot of other films seems to be that the casting director either has not read the book or does not care about staying true to the books author and casts actors who are popular at that given moment (just to sell the movie).
Next if a movie like this one is so different from the story line, they should not be allowed to use the books title and character names, in this and many other movies even stating "based on the novel" is a stretch.
So to review - this story has very little in common with the novel (which I feel was one of the best in the Jack Ryan series) and Michael B. Jordan is not John Clark.
However the film was a well acted action film, if they hadn't called it Without Remorse and the main character was not John Clark I would have given it a much higher rating.
