Great values great story great actors
4 December 2021
I'm late to that party but I'm Soo glad I skipped the US version and came straight here.

A lot has been said about the unpredictability and quality of this show so I won't repeat things here.

I want however to stress two things that very much impressed me.

1. The color gradings are brilliant. I think these days the British have a gift for bold colors and how to use them

2. The acting is fantastic and I am awed by two performances in particular: Neil Maskell (I knew I saw him- in Kill List) and Paul Ready (I knew I saw him- in The Terror). The whole cast is great but these two are over the rest as far as I'm concerned.

Generally this is the bliss you get when a great script is handled by a great crew with a great cast.

Bravo to all.

Here goes... Not much
16 November 2021
I am a fan of b-movies and shlock and Asian and European movies.

Case in point, I loved Premutos.

But this movie here has no redeeming value past the first five minutes.

But being the borderline ocd person that I am, I watched through to its sorry end.

And much like Nekromantik, I vaguely think that I did the director a favor and that I should get at least a token award for it.

Not a great feeling is it.

In defense of the girls
1 November 2021
I see a lot of hate about the 4 girls so I would like to balance the ratings.

No they are not grating or insufferable.

They are real and they keep me coming back to the show.

Kristen is a Mary Sue, David and Ben are lovable archetypes, and I like them a lot, but I just love the girls to bits.

Kudos to the young actresses and to the writers. They come across as real, fresh, each with their own character and lovable.

So there, Sue me.

Lazy writing
9 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I love Rebecca Hall to bits and indeed this movie doesn't fly without her.

It's just lazy writing, and an incredibly litteral, in-your-face interpretation than should have been taken much further. Or maybe I missed it. But depression (there- I said it) deserves a much better treatment.

I saw another comment about House of Leaves. Just because there's a house (and blueprints which by the way are totally mentioned then forgotten) doesn't mean there's a chance that the everest of semiotics will be made into a movie. I for one hope not.

So yeah, hooray for Rebecca, and I'm glad she still works in that mystery/horror vein, but I hope she chooses more interesting projects moving forward.

Thanks you James

Wan does Suspiria. From the poster art to the euro (gorgeous-there I said it) looks of Mrs Wallis, this is a nice throwback and a fitting love letter to a certain era of Italian cinema. The script is fittingly modern (but not too much), even if the chroma filters are somewhat shaky compared to the masters of the genre. But he makes it up with a shot of the innards of a VCR, to show his 20th century bona fides.

There are even shades of Channel Zero and yes, that's a good thing, even if the reverse-body thing is getting tired, all hail Troy James who invented it.

Also, bangs.

...

As I was writing all these interesting things, the third act started, and I started grinning stupidly and

That's what movies are for.

Go forth, James, you artist you. Melding 80s synth cheese music with 80s-lets-follow-this-idea-as-far-as-itll-take-us attitude, the result is refreshing. Yes, that's what it's all about. Forget MCU and horror-by-committee (sorry Mr Blum I like your work), I'm so happy that this here is a little piece of innocence lost. Memories of Troma indeed.

So Suspiria meets Troma (with a budget). Not too shabby for horror fans!

Now if you liked this, I'm sure you know where to find the 80s American classics. But do yourself a favor: go watch Berberian Sound Studio for starters. And then Bava and Argento.

Also, a personal message: tell Mrs Pugh, the greatest actress of her generation, to drop bad wicker man remakes and look for scripts such as this.

And thanks James for the memories and for a great cinema moment.

A message from 2021

I love how all reviews complain about the lack of logic in the time travel rules of this movie.

They all live in a time before Tenet.

Animala, we love you

Oh well

I am seriously in awe of this movie. Not only does it have a weird, twisted sense of humor that I share, but the filmmaker carried it out to the end, and that is no small feat. A lark turned into a proper movie.

Yes it's a silly 1950's b-movies hommage, but I posit this is more than that. This is proper senseless humor, so-bad-its-good entertainment, with dialog and situations that teeter between hysterical and uncomfortable, achieving greatness in the process.

This is a movie from which I want to memorize every line, knowing only a few people will find it funny. But I share a lot with those who do.

My only problem is with the picture quality -- this looks like bad, grainy digital picture. I would rather have it looking analog. I understand that this would have cost more, but it's distracting as far as I'm concerned, and it loses some of its appeal in the process.

That said, this is a genuine hysterical movie. Please enjoy this rare treat with people who have a similarly twisted sense of humor.

Too bad for the others.

Oh well.

Ps- Animala, we all love you.

waste material
2 May 2021
An AI (or a Hollywood exec) wrote a film that has no soul and no meaning. Why?

Besson did it (imperfectly) with Nikita a hundred years ago.

Ava is painting by numbers, saccharine, straight to dvd waste material.

I have no grudge against mrs Chastain but I beg you to avoid this movie.

It has no redeeming value.

Damn.

The humanity

This is funnier than it has any right to be. Not being american I could never find mst3000 funny but if I did, this is what it would look like. Seriously there's a lot of subtle humor going on behind the wax gore, and it works. At least for me. This is going in the special pile of gore that tickles my bone, along with Braindead, Street Trash and Cabin in the woods. Not a small accomplishment.

"So I was shooting this movie in Italy, then I went on vacation in the alps and forgot about it, then I remembered I had to finish it and we shot the end in the back yard of the restaurant where I had a nice apfelstrüdel lol nothing matters who needs a script".

Dario I love you, you have some chops, but seriously?

Rodriguez multiplied by Miike
2 May 2021
"hurry up and finish the machine gun"

If you watch movies to grow a conscience and share the world's pain, I applaud you, go watch a Ken Loach movie.

If however you're looking for escapism, you've found it. I won't even mention Tarentino because this is miles ahead (away?) of/from Hollywood. In terms of pure entertainment without any tinseltown strings, think early Rodriguez (1992) multiplied by Miike. If you know these names, sit back, relax, and enjoy. As far as I'm concerned, this is what movies are about.

Also, hope you're not offended by fake blood and silly references.

Haha.

Surprisingly timely
2 May 2021
Heavy handed, but surprisingly effective.

On the effects of a remote life, thanks to the interwebs and Uber.

And a surprisingly contemporary ending, with people in their dressing gowns coming out in the streets -- is this what the end of the Covid confinement will look like?

Ps-yes, Bruce Willis is scary with that wig. Get over it. In 10 years we won't even have actors.

Going Nowhere
2 May 2021
I wanted to like it, I really did. Suspiria meets Michael Mann.

But ultimately, this goes nowhere.

The "deer in the headlight" trope can only go so far, and frankly the third act makes no sense to me.

But yeah, gorgeous cinematography.

(with respect to "Going Nowhere", check out the Lena Zavaroni version on YouTube. You're welcome)

A feminist's vampire movie.

Directed by a man.

Why ?

Although I'm not a fan of vampire movies (sue me), this is quite good fare, with good cringe-then-laugh moments of blatant misoginy, male cluelessness, and a touching Nosferatu tribute.

And yes, Anne, we root for you.

Silly but still fun
2 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Over the top silly fun with all standard values turned upside down.

Yes the misoginy is unsubtle (but is it exagerated?), yes the heroin is over the top kick ass , but that's what is fun about it. Even the last sequence, with her going from full WWE fatality mode to breast feeding her baby in the space of 20 seconds.

Also some weird choices in the visual department, with the men being presented with weird green/red hues and them being only voices for a good part of the movie. But the FX for the Gremlins are frankly satisfying.

However this is indeed escapism. Don't overthink it. Enjoy Ms Moretz' acting skills and the overall sillyness of it all.

Also, kudos to the end credits. Loved the women-at-war montage, and Hounds Of Love was an inspired choice.
