Death to Smoochy (2002)
A complete gem!
I don't know how I missed this movie for so long. Not only do Robin Williams and Ed Norton put in superb performances, the whole cast is great. The writing is very witty: "Let's cut off his balls and stuff 'em up his ass." "That's not standard police procedure." The story is whacky and truly funny. Robin Williams is alternately possessed and pathetic, while Ed Norton is an organic fruitcake. The Irish gangsters are an inspired addition.
Backtrack (2015)
Superb ghost story
Unlike ghost stories that try to scare the viewer, this one is all about ghosts tormenting the protagonist. And boy is it well done with top notch performances by Mr. Brody, Sam Neill and the other cast members. The plot is tightly constructed and though one of the pivotal moments seems impossible, it fits. Brody's father's character is so well cast he really looks like he could be his father. This is well worth seeing.
Planet Void (2015)
Interesting idea
Earth has been struck with a mold that destroys all male embryos. An alien offers to create a hybrid variety of human males to bring males back to the planet.
But the film is barely worth watching. There is a small amount of humor, but there is a badly underplayed horror element that prevents the film from taking itself seriously.
Dracula (2020)
Great adaptation of the classic novel
This production is imaginative and brings us into the present day. The acting is top notch, and the dialog is just superb. The sets are carefully crafted with an artist's eye for color and composition. I could wish that the scenes aboard ship rocked a bit more with the waves, but that's really the worst thing about this miniseries.
