Promising Young Woman (2020)
Jaw-dropping masterpiece
Wonderfully made unique and terrifying thriller that speaks volumes about the current climate.
Smartly written, tightly directed, staggering performance from Carey and an ending that will stick with you for days.
Killing Eve: Still Got It (2020)
Another bed episode
At least this season is consistent. Consistently bad. What is happening this season? I don't know. The plot is all over the place. The writing is poor. There are zero memorable or engaging moments. People who think this is good television clearly do not know real good television and compelling writing. Fans whining about people disappointed in this season need to climb off Villanelle's horse. This is categorically not good television, it's annoying and unfunny and stupid.
Killing Eve: Management Sucks (2020)
Another showcase for how far this once brilliant series has fallen
I have decided that I'm going to review every episode of this season as a way to document my feelings and, sadly, frustrations as each episode airs.
Sadly, after the rather appalling season premiere, the second episode didn't do much in the way of dispelling my fears for this season. Uninspired writing, boring character interactions, countless missed opportunities and overuse of 'chic' cinematography adds up to another soulless and disengaging episode.
The scenes that had potential (Carolyn in the car, the clown party) came up short. I am giving this a 6/10 because the central actors continue to give great performances, but their talents are being entirely wasted on such a boring story.
The greatest disappointment is that we all know what levels of greatness this show can achieve - it would be a criminal shame for it to be reduced into the drivel that it sadly looks like it is becoming.
Tune in next week for my thoughts on Episode 3.
Killing Eve: Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey (2020)
Weak first episode
Aside from the shock ending, the season premiere was not up to the standard that the show has reached in the past.
The opening scene? Weak. Not funny or clever. Villanelle got married? Ok, great, would love to find out how this happened. Do we? No. She leaves her wedding reception and we don't hear from her wife again.
The rest of the episode? Boring. Uninspired. Where has the sharp humour and great writing gone?
The beauty of Killing Eve's first season was its ability to shock, humour and teach us something about the characters within one line. I could feel this lacking in Season 2, and I'm afraid it still seems to be lacking now.
Hopefully it will pick up as we move forward with the plot, but I really think the writing could do with a huge brush up. You can have lush locations and costumes, but if the writing, the blueprint of any production, is not solid, the whole building will be faulty.
Killing Eve: I Hope You Like Missionary! (2019)
Favourite episode so far
I've been up and down with this season but this episode totally brought it back for me. The dynamic between the actresses is as fascinating and organic as ever; the writing was top notch, as was the suspense. Hilarious, shocking and subversive - this show in a nutshell.
The Ring (2002)
Really weird, but amazing stuff here...
I was extremely impressed with this movie. It has a big concept, a good balance of things and some good scares. It is very different and has weird parts to make it scary, like no other horror movie does. Everything seems to move very fast, which is on the edge-of-you-seat kind of style which is great. I like the cast and the acting. I like the use of light, an camera angles. I like the way at the end of each scary scene, it flicks through all of the images on the cursed tape very quickly (it does this 3 times throughout the movie). The suspense build-up causes fearful tension, and gives a sense of creepiness down you spine. I think this should be given a go to watch, even if horror movies scare the living daylights outta you. It's not THAT scary, it's very very well put together, and overall one of the best movies I have ever seen. Fantastic, give it a go!!!
