The Ice Storm (1997)
Frozen out from the Academy?
Middle class complacency brings contentment brings boredom brings alienation - heralds the arrival of destruction.
Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline in arguably their best roles. A cold unerring look at middle America - is it any wonder it wins awards only on foreign shores. A mirror held up to American society - they averted their gaze.
Delicately directed by Ang Lee, no punches are pulled. Do not miss it.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
Queer Dinkum Matey
A romp across a disbelieving outback, this outragous adventure enchants through it's downright brazeness. Comedy from the clashing confrontation of cultural assumptions - as Drama from Crisis. Perhaps a little too Queenie for some - I would love to have watched IN a cinema audience in the outback. Shockingly good
La Cage aux folles (1978)
French Farce at its best
A wonderful gallic romp where even the most hardened must surely empathise with the ridiculous predicaments our protagonists weave themselves into. Probably Michel Serrault's greatest role to date, he is ably supported by Ugo Tognazzi. Oozing European style throughout. The American Bird Cage is a very poor imitation.
Revelation (2001)
Carry On Up the Testaments
I saw this in London and was amazed. The only thing more wooden than the principal prop - the loculus box - was the luckless cast. What was Liam Cunningham doing here? Check out the scene where the Bad Baron (Udo Kier) visits the Wizard's den to discover that the Golden Goose will not lay.... this isn't occult fantasy - it's common pantomime - "boo-hiss, he's behind you!". On an up-note - check the web-site - its a MUST SEE ;-)
