Vacancy (2007)
Excellent Horror/Thriller
Probably inspired by Psycho and/or Motel Hell, this film brilliantly puts the viewer into the position of the victims throughout the film and therefore makes you worried when they are worried, scared when they are scared and hopeful when they are hopeful.
Like the other two films I mentioned previously, this film is about customers walking into a motel to book a room and finding out later that the manager or owner is up to foul play, even when they seem very friendly at first. Although when the manager first appeared in this movie scary music played in the soundtrack to let you know he was the 'bad' guy, which, whilst we all know he probably will turn out to be the bad guy, was a bit of a cliché.
Perhaps the most frightening part of the film was when the couple were watching the Snuff films that were set in their own motel room, and from that point on you were brought into the fear that the victims had.
The funny thing about this film is that it's about slasher films, but yet isn't really a slasher film itself, but a hell of a good horror/thriller that makes you scared about the idea of Snuff films.
With some excellent acting and suspenseful moments that leave you tense, if you want to watch a horror film that draws you in, this is one you should watch.
WWE Backlash (2007)
The best non-WrestleMania PPV in a while
This year's Backlash had all the things I love about Pro Wrestling. The suspense, the emotions and the feeling that anything could happen is what makes wrestling so good and this event had all of that. The last three matches the feeling of anything can happen definitely lived up to itself.
Benoit vs. MVP was a good technical match, maybe not as good as their WrestleMania match, but still, good enough. MVP should become a big star for the future in my opinion.
The ECW handicapped match was alright, but it was the outcome that I really couldn't see coming. I was just like everyone else, expecting Bobby Lashley to kick out of Vince's pin attempt when out of nowhere the referee counted three and Vince was the new champion! I felt the shock waves! The internet 'Smarts' must be turning in their armchairs!
What I think WWECW is doing here is that they want all the internet fans to feel the emotion of utter hatred for Vince, which is what Pro Wrestling is all about, the emotion.
The Last Man Standing match between Undertaker and Batista had a lot of suspense, which really helped me enjoy the match. The legdrop on Batista through the announcer's table was cool, and I saw Batista take a great blow to the head (without putting his hands up) with the steel steps by Undertaker. The ending was definitely one of those 'anything can happen' feelings. But now on for the main event.
The fatal four-way match between John Cena, Edge, Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels was terrific, with bodyslams to the ringside area and a moonsault from Michaels similar to his WrestleMania XX match. After seeing this match (and the Cena-Michaels match on RAW in London), if you still think Cena has no ability then you must be in denial. He did a brilliant top-rope legdrop onto Edge and Orton and the way Cena broke up the double boston on Michaels just speaks for itself. No-one expected the ending and anyone tired of Cena would have felt the frustrations of him winning again and would watch WWE again to see if Michaels could get another shot at the title. This match was all about emotions and entertainment and deserves a 5/5.
All in all an excellent PPV for non-WrestleMania standards. I can't wait to see what happens next with the Cena-Michaels storyline.
The Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior (2005)
Biased or honesty
The release of this DVD caused a lot of controversy with both Warrior fans and WWE fans and debate on the war between McMahon and Warrior went all over the internet forums. But I knew that you can't judge Warrior or WWE for the stuff said until you actually see the documentary. Having seen it, I think the project isn't really negative on Warrior overall as there is just as much praise as there is criticisms on the DVD. Therefore I think it is a mixed opinion production. Although there are a lot of things said on the DVD that I think the WWE didn't have any right to say.
First off, quite a few of the people interviewed said they couldn't make out anything the Warrior said in his promos, which was a fair enough opinion, but only a bit after covering this, they showed a promo given by Andre the Giant who (no disrespect to him) was even harder to make out. The documentary spent all this time criticising Warrior of not giving clear enough interviews but never said a damn thing about the fact that Andre was even worse.
Also, when covering the third time Vince McMahon fired Warrior, Vince said his reason for the dismissal was because Warrior failed to attend some live events because his father had passed away. Vince then mentioned how the Warrior said he hated his own father and couldn't care less about him and so Vince saw this as a false excuse to not attend and so he fired Warrior. This was an unfair dismissal in my opinion because even if Warrior couldn't care less about his father, his family would still expect him to spend time with them in their mourning. It would also be a time of regret for Warrior because he would wish he had spent more time with his dad. So I can see how it would have been a difficult time for Warrior.
They also said how weird it was that he changed his name from Jim Hellwig to Warrior. Mr. T officially changed his name to that of Mr. T but you don't hear anyone ridicule that. And Mr. T had a good relationship with WWE.
Despite the biased criticism, the rest is terrific, with some really good footage of the Ultimate Warrior as well as other interesting information on Warrior's career and on the DVD extras there is the legendary Hogan vs Warrior battle from WrestleMania 6 and his cage match against Rick Rude from SummerSlam 1990. Like I said earlier, this DVD has as much praise to the Warrior as it has criticisms, and it is only because negative stuff sticks out more that people say the DVD is completely against Warrior. If you want to join the debate about Warrior and McMahon, you MUST watch this first.
World of Sport (1964)
Watch for a good laugh and good wrestling
Britain's wrestling fans today may just be familiar with the stuff that goes on today in the WWE, and so unfortunately may never know how much of a tradition wrestling has in this country. But before there was Hulk Hogan, there was Big Daddy. Before there was The Big Show, there was Giant Haystacks. Before there was Chris Benoit, there was the Dynamite Kid. Before there was The Undertaker, there was Kendo Nagasaki. Before there was Chris Masters and Lex Luger, there was Johnny England. Before there was Eddie Guerrero, there was 'Rollerball' Mark Rocco. Before William Regal came to WWE, he was Roy Regal. And before Finlay came to WWE, he was 'Superman' Fit Finlay.
The wrestling that used to be aired on ITV World of Sport every Saturday featured a lot of 'comedy' matches, with the likes of Catweasel and Pedro the Gypsi, that wasn't really wrestling but was good if you wanted a laugh.
There was also a lot of great wrestling action that actually was 'wrestling', and not just a bunch of fat dudes hobbling around the ring belly-bumping each other (AKA Big Daddy). Wrestlers like Marty Jones, Johnny Kidd, Dynamite Kid, Young David and of course, Mark 'Rollerball' Rocco were the kind of guys who could flat-out wrestle, and always gave you a match you were proud to say was 'made in the UK'. I think that if Mark Rocco wasn't made to retire early due to a heart condition, he would have become a legend all around the world. But he made one hell of an impact in Japan and the UK, and was a true pioneer in the fast-paced wrestling style of today. In fact, Rocco and Dynamite Kid are the reason wrestling is more fast-paced then it was back in the day.
If you ever check this program out, either on the Wrestling Channel or on a DVD, you should keep your eyes out for matches with Finlay, Rocco, Johnny Saint or Dynamite in it. They are classic wrestling.
But whether its great wrestling or creative gimmicks you're after, this is the show for you.
