Entertaining but quite uneven
17 November 2023
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes plunges us into a vintage Panem and i'll admit, i'd love to see more stories in this world. The production of this movie is really brilliant; costumes, set design and the old school aesthetic all are perfect.

Tom Blyth is the heart of this movie and he does a really good job with what he's given (Rachel Zegler also has an amazing voice). My issue with the characters in this movie is that we aren't given enough time for their character arcs to really hit home and to care enough about them to understand their motivations.

It all wraps up far too suddenly in the third act and here lies the issue of pacing in the film. It's quite uneven, spending too long on some parts and not enough on others. It works for the most part but some areas begin to drag.

Overall i had a fun time with this but was left a bit disappointed. Snow's backstory is great but not as good as it should have been.

The Killer (2023)
7/10
A unique thriller to say the least
30 October 2023
Fassbender and Fincher have crafted a cold and very slick thriller. It's incredibly unique and in many ways, brilliant. It will certainly not be for everyone and it should not be categorised as an action film.

David Fincher's directing is as crisp and precise as always. The cinematography is great and the film looks incredible. It's technically sound and visually stunning with its cold contrasted shots. Fassbender is as brilliant as always and commands the scenes.

BUT, my brain cannot seem to accept the simplicity of the story. I expected something completely different from this and i really believe that the synopsis provided is misleading. It does not feel like there are any stakes in this film nor character development and under no point is there serious danger. We get a brief (cliche) incident to get us started and then it is monotone the rest of the way, much like the protagonist. Maybe there's a hidden, beautiful parallel to that, i dont know.

I feel like i need to watch this again with a different mindset because it's not what i expected or what was advertised.

Despite my complaints, i liked this movie. I just wish the story and action sequences had been expanded a lot more. It's worth a watch, just not the watch you're expecting.

The Creator (2023)
8/10
A brilliant but imperfect sci-fi epic
28 September 2023
Brief Spoiler Free Review!

The Creator has been one of my most anticipated movies of the year and i have to say, for the most part, it didn't disappoint.

Gareth Edwards' big action set pieces, cinematography and visuals are incredible and given the budget of this movie, it's leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. John David Washington proves to be a solid lead yet again, showing his range remarkably well in this movie.

The AI aspect is handled quite well however i think the script it's the weakest part of this movie. You will notice some themes and storylines here have a certain familiarity to them, much like most films nowadays. Some tweaks here and there could have improved this greatly but the character development was sound.

That being said, for me the positives far outweigh the negatives in this movie. It is not quite the sci-fi epic I expected but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Definitely worth a watch on the big screen!

Overall 8/10.

It's damn near perfect.
3 May 2023
This is what we get when you give a writer and director creative control. Someone who actually cares about the story of characters and it's produced a near perfect conclusion to the GOTG.

The darker tone of the movie is set early on and it instantly raises the stakes, however James Gunn doesn't forget to let us have fun along the way. I laughed a bunch and of course there was some comedy that didn't quite hit. And also, action scenes were outstanding!

Some scenes in this are certainly disturbing and make you uncomfortable but its necessary and very much adds depth to the story and characters. Rocket, you have my respect Sir. His backstory is absolutely brilliant, i wish there was more.

The movie fan in me gives this a 10/10 but if im being critical, it's a 9/10. Adam Warlock felt like a wasted opportunity and he was just THERE. I don't think they really knew what to do with him. Gamora's character has become difficult to do anything with but I appreciate what they tried here.

A near perfect conclusion to the Guardians. You'll definitely be missed.

It's really not that good
29 April 2023
I think it's safe to say, a lot of people have been really excited and vocal about the new Evil Dead Rise. I myself have been looking forward to it after being bombarded with nothing but praise for this movie. And unfortunately, it's really below average.

The opening sequence was great and got me hooked straight away. Then comes a nosedive of massive proportions and simply tanks the film. I considered walking out on multiple occasions. Also, i have no issue with extreme violence and gore however excessive vomiting ??? It's just really unnecessary and added nothing.

I detested the majority of the characters, stupid decisions after stupid decision. I understand it's for the plot but i really just hated Danny and couldn't care less about him. I just felt sorry for the poor girl who played Kassie and had to go through filming this movie.

Overall 5/10 - some stuff was cool and weird but the characters and plot made this film drag and i just wasn't impressed at all. DONT believe all the hype. If you don't watch this movie, you're not missing anything.

Ghosted (I) (2023)
6/10
It's fun and stupid, exactly what you're expecting
21 April 2023
Ghosted, starring Ana de Armas and Chris Evans is pretty much what you think it is. Nothing more, nothing less. It's basic, fun, silly and over the top

I was pleasantly surprised that it started pretty quick and kept up a good pace throughout the movie. The two leads have great chemistry and scenes don't feel too forced for the most part which is good.

This kind of story is so recycled it could probably save climate change by now. Nonetheless, it kinda works no matter how absurd and cliche it is.

I feel like everyone should know what they're getting into with this movie so just take it for what it is and you'll find it entertaining enough.

Overall, 6/10 - It's cliche and doesn't try to be anything else. Action is decent enough with over the top scenes sprinkled throughout. And Ana and Chris bounce off each other well enough for people to have a bit of mindless fun with this movie.

The Last of Us: Look for the Light (2023)
Season 1, Episode 9
4/10
Im sorry but NO
13 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I did not play hours and replay this game for many more hours to finally see the epic finale unfold like this. 43 minute run time is ridiculous

LOVED Anna's brief backstory, that was an amazing bit of added detail. After that, im sorry, but this was rushed. You can give credit to the story as much as you want but the lack of infected has been difficult to get over especially in the final episode.

It turns out that i did not need to die many times over to clickers and bloaters just to get to the hospital. It was all a waste of my time.

Also the lack of infected has really made me not care at ALL about a cure because they really aren't that much of a problem in the show. There's hardly any of them about plus the people seem to have found happy ways to live???

Im sad, some of the episodes were amazing but most boring and i wont be able to get over that.

Acting amazing, directing okay but 6/10 from an avid player of the game.

Glass Onion (2022)
6/10
Slow start, exciting middle and childish end...
23 November 2022
I really enjoyed Knives Out and was looking forward to the sequel with much anticipation ever since it was announced. I was, however, disappointed.

With Glass Onion, director and writer Rian Johnson shows once again that he can carefully craft an intriguing story with brilliant direction. But with a bigger budget comes many challenges and unfortunately the movie fails when it is trying too be too extravagant and a spectacle for the viewers.

The core story is very interesting and after a dull start, the middle of the film really hits it's stride with Johnson moving his playing pieces about with ease and wonderment. That was when i most enjoyed the movie.

But the ending was ultimately disappointing. Childish humour and some sequences that were clearly for spectacle which i can only describe as 'throwing a tantrum' ruined this movie for me.

I had some fun with this but was left feeling robbed as there was definitely a compelling enough story here for this to be another great movie. I do feel the more intimate character/story driven moments in this film are where it shines and not in the big budget set pieces.

Watch this if you enjoy the genre, but please lower your expectations before doing so!

The Devil's Hour (2022– )
9/10
Very well made, tense thriller. Pay attention!
28 October 2022
I'll keep this review brief!

I've just finished binging this series and i can honestly say i was pleasantly surprised! It's a perfect mix of eerie and intriguing.

Directing and acting is top notch and the story is very engaging and intricate right from episode 1. There's plenty of unexpected twists and turns as the story develops but you must pay attention!

There are small details in each episode that are very relevant so bear that in mind before starting this series.

9/10 for me. One of the better tv shows released this year. Definitely worth a watch if you like a good psychological thriller!

It has its moments but ultimately falls short
24 October 2022
Credit where credit is due. The characters in this movie were all brilliant and felt very unique, much like the story which is somewhat unusual.

There were plenty of moments that were hilarious, heartwarming and heartbreaking but in the end the film is very much weighed down by the lack of direction and conclusiveness in the story.

The directing is superb, dialogue is quick witted and sharp. It nails all the basics but never really takes off.

The film came and went. I had a good time but was left feeling a little robbed as if i almost expected too much from it. At the end, i didn't really feel anything when i felt like i should have...

Not for everyone! Ana De Armas shines in this raw biopic
16 September 2022
I'll keep this review quite brief, i really enjoyed this movie even though it went on slightly too long. It's a very raw depiction of the 'fictionalized' inner life of Marylin Monroe and it was done it a very artsy fashion which i must say, i enjoyed

Costume design and acting was superb meaning i was constantly engaged with each scene because of it's beauty.

However it will not be for everyone. There are a few scenes that are difficult to watch and will be uncomfortable for a lot of viewers but I believe that was the intention. Some viewers will be uncomfortable with the hyper sexualisation of the iconic figure but that is just the take of this film and script! It's not an absolute truth

Ana de Armas please take a bow! An Oscar should be on the table.
