Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Butter Spread Over too Much Bread
I understand that the director didn't want to focus on the drug abuse. They wanted to show the person behind the scandal, but they cover so much and shy away from something that was such a defining part of her life to the point that this movie has no weight. It flies by, things happening so fast and disjointedly that it gives no sense of her life passing by or explanation of when/why she turned to drugs and alcohol. It's just too much in too little time with too little truth. It ends up just being a confusing, pointless waste. Hopefully, that was just bad movie making and wasn't what the director was trying to suggest about Whitney Houston's life. From this film, it's unclear what their intent was.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
It's not WoT
I was so forgiving at the beginning of the show, understanding that written media and television have to hook their audiences differently, but then it kept going and kept getting further and further from the books until it was no longer remotely the same story. It was just another fantasy story in a medieval-ish setting with the same character names and a sort of similar magic system. If they weren't going to actually make Wheel of Time, I don't understand why they even bothered to call it that or use the same character names. They had a wealth of source material to create a masterpiece. Instead they made this. It is misleading to the loyal fans of this incredible series to call this show by the same name.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Both Stars are for Madisynn
I watched every episode of this show. Why? Maybe I'm masochistic? It was awful. You know what you don't ever need to do to make yourself feel better? Put someone else down. Whoever wrote this seemed to think that the only way to hook a female audience was to make women feel better by putting men down. It was over done, insulting to men and women, and boring. If the only way to lift She-Hulk up as a character was to men-bash relentlessly and break the fourth wall, they needed a rewrite. The only light in this whole series was Madisynn, who brought much needed levity. I hope to see her in the Marvelverse again.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Hope the Movie is Just Like the Show
So I can skip it and save some money. The plot in this show was lacking in momentum and anything of interest. Every episode dragged, and frankly, the female villain was 1,000x more likable and interesting than Falcon or WS. There was a "twist" at the end the was the tiniest bit intriguing, but not enough to warrant watching this snooze fest. If you really want to know ask someone who already suffered through it and unwittingly took one for the team. If future films/shows of Capt America follow this show's example, the franchise should be ended before it can further ruin the Capt America brand.
Boo, Bitch (2022)
Just Bad
I'm trying to have this on in the background, and I can't even stand it for that. It's horrible. The storyline is cringe. The characters are either boring or over the top acerbic (and somehow are still boring). They are written so poorly I can't even tell if the acting is good or bad. It fails to even be a mindlessly entertaining background show. Save yourself and skip it.
Eternals (2021)
Forgettable at Best
There are some Marvel movies. I truly dislike. They are weak writing and make lazy nonsensical choices for the characters to manipulate the plot. I would rate those higher than this. This was just disappointing. It felt like five plus hours of characters and plot that I just couldn't care about. It's amazing that in a movie that long, they couldn't develop characters enough for the audience to form some kind of connection with them.
Also, I know they were bragging about how they shot the fight scenes differently with far less special effects than other movies, but it didn't work. I watched this at home, not in theaters, and no matter how high I turned up the brightness, the bulk of the fight scenes were basically hazy darkness. Shooting fight scenes in the dark to obscure mistakes is nothing new. In fact, it was nice to see that going by the wayside.
Overall, I have to say that this truly is my least favorite Marvel film by far. And, it's not because there are obvious plot manipulations or character's personalities are assassinated. They didn't leave a gaping plot hole in the ending for the audience to fill in that is just infuriating. It's not that kind of bad. It's just because, in the end, I don't care about this film. At all. It made zero impression on me, and when I think of Marvel and their film catalogue, this won't even occur to me as having been part of it. It's completely forgettable.
Kitz (2021)
3 stars is generous
This is like the German take on Elite, only Elite does it far, far better. I knew exactly where this was headed as soon as all of the characters had been introduced. If you have even the tiniest ability to reason inferentially, there is zero suspense. Still, it's a decent mindless watch if you want something on in the background that you don't need to focus on.
Radium Girls (2018)
An Actual Atrocity
The story of the radium girls is powerful. They were a group of women who fought a huge corporation and misguided scientific belief, and they won. This is drivel. It fluffs over their suffering and the court battle they fought. This is such a misrepresentation of an important event in American history. It's criminal. Don't waste your time on this misrepresentation. Go read The Radium Girls by Kate Moore. If you're not a reader, get the audiobook. It's worth your time in a way this never will be.
