Iconic to moronic in a generation, the sad demise of the Ghostbusters franchise.
13 May 2024
The original Ghostbusters was an icon of its time and had all the right ingredients for a movie that's still enjoyable decades later. Will anyone want to watch this abysmal effort in a few decades time? I doubt many would want to watch it again at any time, as it lacks everything that made the original a classic.

The new young cast are simply awful and all of their acting seems to be completely over the top for no good reason. None of their characters are interesting or in any way engaging and they sadly set the tone for the whole movie, which is equally unengaging.

The appearance of some of the original cast is good to see, but they can't rescue the damage done by the new generation. Add in Paul Rudd who seems to play the exact same character, no matter the movie he's in, and you have a rather flat, at times irritating and ultimately disappointing movie, with no pay off in return for the 2 hours you endured it for.

The effects are impressive as one would expect, but when that's the only positive you can find in a movie, it demonstrates just how poor it is.

I think they should put the franchise to bed, rather than continue with this new cast, as I can't see them being able to create anything worthwhile if they continue on this path.

Ricky Gervais does it so much better
2 May 2024
I really don't know where to start, but I have to say there wasn't anything I liked about this show and I generally like Jimmy Carr.

Perhaps he's had extensive plastic surgery, because his face looked strange throughout and I'd go as far as to say, he looked stressed and ill.

As for the comedy, it lacked any kind of flow, came across as desperate and he kept telling the audience they were going to love the next joke, but often, they didn't seem to. I'd guess he was contracted to produce a show and ended up just throwing this together and deep down, he knows it's crap.

Compare and contrast this show with Ricky Gervais last 2 or 3 Netflix shows and the gulf in quality, delivery and humour is vast. I think I chuckled once during the Jimmy Carr show, but I belly laughed throughout the Gervais shows.

If you want to be bored for an hour watching a man on the verge of a breakdown, then this is for you, but if you're after a laugh, put the Gervais shows on, as they're 100 times better.

Season 1 = 7/10 but Season 2 = 3/10
4 February 2024
Such a shame that the 2nd season didn't live up to the standards set by season 1.

The first season is very watchable and has some interesting stories that capture the imagination. Sure, it wasn't of the calibre of Supernatural, but it was enjoyable and interesting.

Season 2 however, lacks the same interest and seems to focus much more on the soap opera character dramas, but not in a way that you care about. It feels like the stories were written by ChatGPT and then a human just tidied it up a bit.

Ultimately, if this is how it's going to be going forwards, I probably won't bother with season 3, assuming it gets made.

If you want a series that deals with this type of subject matter, but is excellent throughout, I'd highly recommend Evil, which is several leagues above SurrealEstate in every single way.

A documentary about corn would be less corny!
13 January 2024
Aside from this being nothing new or original, it's a poorly written and directed effort with corny dialogue and laughable action scenes.

In the early stages, we are meant to believe that a criminal of some importance has a security team made entirely of imbeciles that can't fight. They're so bad in fact, that a single man who moves slowly can defeat them all. Perhaps part of the reason for this is that, when one of the bodyguards is fighting with the hero, all the others become paralysed and only regain the ability to move when it's their turn to throw a punch 3 yards from his head. Throw in the odd embarrassingly bad commando roll that wouldn't look out of place in a 4 year olds gymnastics class and there you have it.

But that isn't all this cinematic masterpiece has to offer. No, it also has highly trained operators armed with assault rifles that couldn't hit a barn from 5 yards away. If those are the people that are meant to keep us safe, then we are doomed as a child with a catapult would make a more effective fighting force.

Finally, we come to the twist and the last bit of dialogue, which is delivered with all the emotional intensity of someone reading their gas bill out loud.

Consider this my favour to you - I have watched it so that you don't have to.

Low budget, poorly acted and a mixed up mess
1 October 2023
Sadly, there isn't really anything positive to say about this movie.

The acting is school production standard, which is further hindered by weak and lame dialogue. Add to that the fact the movie jumps around all over the place, seemingly for no reason, and you end up with a difficult to watch movie that doesn't deliver on any level. The camera work, colour and sets are all sub par.

There is no mystery, there is no tension, there is no Sci-Fi as such, just a very lame story about one man primarily, and unfortunately, you just can't build any interest in his character.

How movies like this get the green light is beyond me.

Fantastic show with one huge problem that really spoils it
8 July 2023
I'm not alone in thinking 2 things about this show:

1/ the stories and acting generally are really good and it's an enjoyable watch

2/ the 4 girls screaming and shouting in every scene they are in, is just awful and add nothing to the show

Without the 4 girls, or with them in a vastly subdued manner, then this would be a solid 8/10. Whoever thought having them behave that way constantly was a good idea, should read the reviews on here, as it's the main criticism people have by a wide margin.

Aside from that, in some ways it reminds me of Supernatural which is high praise, but this show doesn't have the graphic violence and horror that Supernatural had. The religious context of the show is handled really well, as there are opposing views on offer as to the existence of god and demons. It doesn't try to push the viewer into one camp or the other, which makes a refreshing change from the current crop of shows that have obvious agendas and try to convince you that one opinion is good and the other opinion is bad.

There's a good comedic element to the show that I like and there's a subtitled scene with Mike Colter in season 2 that had me laughing out loud, as it was completely unexpected.

It's well worth a watch, but be prepared to get infuriated by the over the top screaming, shouting children.

Season 2 is exhausting to watch and yet delivers so little...
28 June 2023
The basic premise of the show is quite interesting and with the right writers, it could be a great show that captivates your interest.

Season 1 was pretty good, but season 2 is awful I'm afraid. It consists of 5% story development and 95% of people constantly screaming, shouting and throwing things around. It is honestly exhausting to listen to screaming and shouting for 45 minutes per episode. To make things worse, most of the screaming and shouting is about the personal melodramas rather than anything to do with the mystery the story is supposed to be.

The standard of acting is poor overall, but then I guess it's difficult to bring your A game to a role where you just scream and shout.

With new writers and better direction, this could be good, but as it is, it's going downhill fast.

Perhaps if someone other than Emma McDonald had been cast as the lead...
4 June 2023
...But, then, maybe not.

I'm a huge Sci Fi fan and it never ceases to amaze me how 90% of "Sci Fi" shows and movies are a complete dud. Either, we get a soap opera that's called Sci Fi because the family dramas play out on a spaceship, without any actual Sci Fi anywhere to be seen, or we get Sci Fi that's so badly written, it makes your teeth itch.

Well, this is undeniably Sci Fi, but it's also awful. The writing is substandard, the dialogue is terrible and the acting is often cringeworthy. Emma McDonald who plays the lead role is a dreadful actor, but she ticks the gender and minority boxes, so I guess talent doesn't matter. And just be clear, The Expanse had a minority female lead and I thought that was superb. The difference? Quality of writing and acting ability of the cast.

The science displayed is beyond parody and makes a mockery of the viewer's intelligence, but fortunately, you'll be so bored you won't care.

Enjoyable movie, but it would help if they got the basics right
22 May 2023
Firstly, as a movie, this is quite entertaining and they have certainly nailed the 70s vibe with the vehicles and fashions etc.

The action is good and overall, the acting is better than average, making for an enjoyable viewing experience.

The story, whilst nothing new, is delivered well enough that you start to build some empathy for the characters involved. Violence seldom improves a situation and perpetual violence is a difficult cycle to break, particularly when you have a personal motivation.

What I don't understand, particularly given the attention to detail with vehicles etc, is why the main military character is described as "An SAS Officer" in the synopsis.

Firstly, he is wearing Sergeant stripes, so he's an NCO, not an officer. Furthermore, there is no mention at any point of the SAS, unless I somehow missed it.

Overall, a good movie and well worth a watch.

Rather dull and long winded. Certainly not worthy of an 8.7 score
16 May 2023
All opinions are subjective and what one person likes, another may not.

With Severence, I fall into the "may not" category, as I found it terminally dull and uninteresting.

The pacing for 99% of season 1 is glacial at best and at times, sleep inducing. For people to describe this as ground breaking, is frankly astonishing.

The acting is good and the set in the office creates a good atmosphere, but aside from that, pretty much nothing happens apart from a couple of one minutes scenes where something does happen.

The 3 score is for good acting and good sets. Aside from that, I wasn't impressed and I'm not bothered whether there is a second season.

It has absolutely no redeeming qualities
13 May 2023
Wow, this is possibly the worst movie I've seen in the last decade. It really is jaw droppingly awful.

The special effects are hilarious and look like they've been created by a 9 year old using a Commodore Amiga.

Acting is delivered with all the charisma but none of the warmth of a piece of structural timber.

Soundtrack is abysmal and fits the movie in the same way a pair of gloves would fit a fish.

I genuinely cannot believe that anyone thought this was a good idea and then after seeing the abomination they had created, decided to put it out for public consumption.

Even Asylum would be ashamed to create something this bad and they have a spectacular back catalogue of dreadful movies.

Is there a place for this movie? Yes, most definitely....it's called the bin.

Quantum Leap (2022–2024)

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, this is truly awful.
28 March 2023
The original Quantum Leap was a great show of its time, with good characters and an interesting storyline.

With that as a baseline to draw their inspiration from for the reboot, the producers decided to completely miscast every single character and add a huge dose of unwanted cheesiness, that's totally cringeworthy.

The production values are much lower than I would expect in 2023 and the standard of acting is very substandard, which combined with the cheesiness and awful characters, makes this almost unwatchable.

If you want to watch and enjoy Quantum Leap, I strongly recommend watching the original series and giving this one a miss.

The Last of Us (2023– )

Massively overrated, average show, with good performances
19 March 2023
Firstly, I'm not a gamer so know nothing of the video game this is based on.

Taken as a stand alone TV series, it's watchable and reasonably enjoyable, but no way on earth is it worthy of the 9/10 it currently has on IMDB. I can only assume the people giving it maximum scores are those that play the video game, so have some form of attachment to the title and story.

The performances by the 2 lead characters are what carries this, as the story is one that's been done many times before and in all honesty, been done better.

Some of the "effects / prosthetics" of the infected are embarrassing, with some infected seeming to be wearing cycling helmets with some papier-mâché on them.

Whilst there are a few action sequences, it's really quite a slow burn that at times, feels a bit of a chore.

The ultimate measure, is that I'm not desperate to see a second series.

In summary: Slow burn, drags at times, laughable costumes, well known storyline but saved from being awful by 2 excellent leads.

A dull story that was obvious within the first 10 minutes
11 March 2023
The premise of the story could have resulted in a very good movie, but instead, it delivered a mediocre tale that seemed to focus quite a lot on the victim complex of a gay couple.

I don't see how a same sex couple added to the story in any way, if anything, I think it would have been better with a heterosexual couple, as a different dynamic would have been in play between them.

There is an obvious religious theme to the movie, though it never felt like a recruitment drive, which is a welcome change from the norm.

The acting was ok and the young girl was probably the most likeable and interesting character, but that's possibly because I couldn't get invested in any of the others.

Whilst there was violence, none of it was particularly graphic and much was left to the imagination, which makes a change from the close up splatters we are normal given.

There just didn't seem to be any tension, anticipation or interest built up during the movie. There was no sense of jeapordy or threat, it was just flat and dull.

Overall, it's a movie I've already forgotten and one I will never rewatch, so for me, it's a big miss.

Watchmen (2019)

I found it difficult to maintain interest and hated the sound track
19 January 2023
Having read all the "it's the best show ever" reviews, I thought this would be pretty good and settled down with expectations of a binge watch.

How wrong I was... firstly, the sound track is atrocious and for the first couple of episodes it seemed more like a musical than anything else. I could only watch 1 or 2 episodes at a time, constantly hoping it would improve, but alas, it didn't.

Yes, there are a few bits of interesting action, but overall. I found it to be tedious and lacking any characters I cared about. There's a good dose of race baiting in there as well, which isn't subtle at all.

I think I've been generous giving it 3/10 and if there's a season two, I'll give it a miss.

Frustrating that the ending wasn't better
8 October 2022
This is an unusual movie and one that I actually enjoyed, however, I wish the ending had done the movie and performances justice.

The setting for the movie added to the atmosphere and provided a good backdrop for an excellent performance from Maika Monroe.

With good pacing, interesting locations and an entertaining (though familiar) plot, the movie was a good watch, however, for me, the ending could have been better.

There are elements of horror and gore, but they aren't gratuitous or shocking and serve to progress the story with an element of menace.

Definitely worth a watch and a solid 6/10.

Utterly abysmal, nonsensical and boring. How did this even get released?
27 August 2022
Rather than giving you a long drawn out review about how bad this is, I will echo the comments of some of the other reviewers - this movie is truly awful. Female lead is unbelievably bad and the "alien" looks like a piece of tissue paper. Additionally, the whole movie makes zero sense. Not one bit.

With that in mind, here's a list of several things I would rather do, than watch this movie again...

1/ remove my ear wax using an oxy-acetylene torch

2/ set fire to my knee caps before attempting to extinguish the flames with an 8lb hammer

3/ swim in shark infested waters whilst wearing a beef swimming cap

4/ stand a bed of nails vertical against a wall and run at it full speed....whilst being tazered

Hopefully, that conveys just how bad this movie is. It should be possible for viewers to sue the makers of such garbage.

Season 1 & 2 excellent - Season 3 pushing agendas
7 August 2022
Such a pity what has happened to The Orville, but sadly, not a surprise.

The first 2 seasons were excellent, with an almost perfect blend of Sci-Fi, action, drama and comedy, with any social topics introduced and played out subtly.

Season 3 seems to have been taken over by those with agendas to push and has lost comedy and subtlety of the the first 2 seasons.

The Captain now talks at length about Earth history (our present day) and how awful we are as a species, with all the subtlety of a donkey kick to the face.

So there you have it, just like everything else that comes out of TV & Movie land, the agenda pushers have their hands on the controls and they've steered it into a wall.

I really don't know who the audience is meant to be
29 July 2022
The language dictates that this isn't a show for children, but everything else dictates it isn't a show for adults.

Poor acting, deeply annoying children, non-engaging plot and no characters to buy into at all.

So who is the target audience? I don't know, but it certainly isn't me.

A swing and a miss I'm afraid.

The Terminal List (2022– )

Very, very entertaining and a great binge watch
27 July 2022
This is one of the best action series I have seen for a long, long time.

The action is relentless and unapologetic, with some of the actions being quite gruesome. By pulling no punches, it takes you on a high adrenaline ride of violence and human emotions, exploring just how far you would go if you felt you had been wronged.

Chris Pratt plays an excellent leading role and brings a degree of depth to his character that makes him believable. He seems to get better with each role he plays.

As an English viewer, it was good to see less of the chest thumping God Bless America behaviour, which doesn't travel the pond particularly well. Whilst the bond between service personnel was a feature, it was much more subtly done and sat perfectly within the overall story.

I really hope they make a second season and if they do, I'll binge watch it just like I did this season.

Better than Discovery, but just not interesting enough
10 July 2022
As a huge Star Trek fan, I couldn't wait to watch Strange New Worlds.

On a positive note, this series isn't over the top woke like Discovery and the return to the episodic stories is welcome, but for me, the stories just aren't interesting or entertaining enough.

The best of all the Star Trek series for me, is TNG and no series since has managed to come close to the crew, stories or excitement of TNG.

Strange New Worlds is, and I know others disagree, a little bit dull and boring.

There's little to no comedy, which I think is sad - some of TNG's best bits were the humour from Data. This just feels a little sterile and bland.

Maybe, if it continues, it will improve and become something great, but as it stands, it doesn't do it for me.

Exceptionally acted and intelligent drama, with a touch of Sci Fi
22 May 2022
Many have described this as slow, which I feel is a bit of a one dimensional view.

Yes, it takes its time, but that's because the character development needs and deserves that time. The depth and reality of the characters is really captivating and story unfolds at a gentle pace, without it becoming boring.

The whole story is intertwined and at times, a little awkward to follow, until you see all the pieces fall into place. It isn't big on Sci-Fi and the main element is the interpersonal relationships, but what Sci-Fi there is, is intriguing and well executed.

This is really a story about people - ordinary people for the main part and the trials and tribulations of life and relationships.

I give this a solid 9/10 and hope there is a season 2 in the not too distant future.

Why was this made? And was it made so badly?
22 May 2022
Annie's original Eraser was a fun movie, with a good blend of action and tongue in cheek humour.

So, with that winning formula to use as inspiration, they decided to do a reboot and throw away everything that made the original enjoyable.

The lead character has the charisma and acting ability of a paper clip, which bizarrely, is more than the rest of the cast have.

The action is woeful, tactically inept and boring. The only comedy is to be found laughing at how bad it is.

Would I rather watch this than sandpaper my eyeballs - yes, but only just...

Used to be fantastic but it's sadly turned into a kissy kissy soap opera
8 March 2022
The first couple of seasons were fantastic, with great action and just enough of the personal life to humanise the characters.

Sadly, season 4 seems to contain more kissing than action, which isn't what I want in an action series. From the makers point of view, the kissing is great because it fills time, costs nothing, needs no locations or special effects and doesn't even need to be part of the story.

So now, every time we see a door kicker with his other half, it's say a sentence then kiss, say another sentence and kiss again, say goodbye and kiss again.

Such a shame, as it was once the best series on TV.
