Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
A beautiful and exciting nostalgic film of the 30s
As well as being an exciting film in its own rights, this is more than anything else an affectionate homage to films of the 1920s and 30s. Set not really in 1939, but in a world of the future as it would have been envisaged had the film been made in 1939, it beautifully recaptures that innocent spirit and the belief that the future would bring a better world of the era that was completely shattered by the horrors of World War II.
This film is in fact a perfect re-creation of films such as Metropolis and Things to Come and serials like Flash Gordon or Buck Rodgers. As for people complaining about the incredulity of the story or wooden acting, let me just say this: IT'S MEANT TO BE LIKE THAT. Watch a film or serial of the said era and you will notice these things. Anyone ever explained why there were dinosaurs on King Kong's island? Was the acting in those old Republic Saturday matinée serials ever convincing? NO - and that's why this film is the same. It is literally a 30s film made in 2004.
To enjoy this film properly, just imagine you are back in 1939, 12 years old, sitting in some opulent cinema with exquisite leather seats, sucking mint humbugs with your copy of this week's Dan Dare tucked under your arm and you will be enthralled. Just remember what it was to be young and what the world was like 70 years ago. For it is that, and not the story, acting or effects, which is the real point of this film.
The Gondoliers (1984)
A brilliant and vibrant performance!
One of the best performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's work I have ever seen. I have always likes G&S, but this particular operetta is now my favourite one of their works, thanks to this film. Combining elaborate (and imaginative) staging with excellent acting and clever visual ideas that all add together to create a fun-packed, light-hearted evening full of great tunes, laughs and a general sense of feeling happy. This is an exemplary sentiment of late 19th century Britain, and what Gilbert and Sullivan is all about.
Afterwards, one cannot get the incredibly catchy melodies out of one's head, and has one's spirits lifted for quite some time. Quite an experience!
'It's Alive!' (1969)
AWFUL!!!
What can I say??? The WORST (and I mean WORST) film ever made!!! (At least of the ones I've seen). Slow, boring, the monster looks what it is; a rubber model!!!
Did this film actually get into the cinemas???
How can ANYBODY watch such JUNK!!!
Do me a favour, destroy every copy of this film in the world, folks...
