great adventure
1 May 2005
Being too young too ever experience the original's of this story, I really had no idea what this film entailed. I had only ever heard brief mutters in the school yard as a child but i never wondered what this hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was. The film has been promoted to the extremes so it was very hard not to notice in the leading weeks to its release. I wondered what the hype was all about so I booked some tickets for a showing. The great British humour hit me from the start and reminded me of some Monty python films in an updated form. This set the tone for the whole film. A modern remake like this would never have had the same outcome if the casting was American. Stephen Fry was a joy to listen to as narrator, as he described all the wonderful creatures and objects that Arthur Dent and the crew came upon.

Even without prior knowledge of anything to do with the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I know the fuss that is brought up when re-makes are made, or adaptations from books/comics are put on film, so thats why I don't read books or comic because I love film and if you sit through a film to criticise it because it doesn't match the book, then stick to the damn books

Collateral (2004)

What can i say? Stunning!
18 September 2004
From all the films I've seen this year, I can say that this was the most enjoyable and original. I'm not much of a reviewer, I don't research, I write from my angle and my personal opinion. It struck me the other day, looking at the filmography of Tom Cruise, the lack of films he's actually starred in. I was surprised because Tom is an outstanding actor in this movie. I am quite a big fan of his films but no other actor could ever have pulled this role off.

I was lucky to be in such a welcome crowd in the cinema I watched this film in. I think everybody thoroughly enjoyed the film. There were many occasions where the whole cinema were in hysterics from some of the funnier comments made in the film. This definitely made the film easier to watch, especially as the cinema was packed being it an advanced preview.

The whole story was structured cleverly and everything was put together in all the right places. I especially liked the camera work and the somewhat interlude type scene with the relaxing music in the background and the wolf in the road.

10/10 i love it

Another boring Stiller Flick
14 September 2004
I don't understand why Ben Stiller has to turn out these boring films. I feel sorry for the people he drags down like Drew Barrymore.

Duplex, or as I viewed it "Our House" starts with a narrative animated scene. Not exactly original but I found it kind of quirky in its own way. In search of a their first perfect house, they step upon a real bargain and in their price range. But as with most things, getting something for cheap means there's a catch. An old lady living in the upper floor. Nancy and Alex are told that if the old lady is to die or leave then both floors will be theirs.

Throughout the film, Alex and Nancy run errands for the old lady above "Mrs. Connelly". After many embarrassing moments and with Nancy losing her job, they decide to end the old lady's life early.

The ending baffles me, in a way that there really isn't an ending. It's a single minute where you realize you could have been doing so much more than watching an abysmal Ben Stiller movie. 3/10

Finally a Film that turns you away from drugs
12 September 2004
Missing out on this film for fours years since its release has obviously restricted my thoughts on films with drugs. Since the films that I usually associate with drugs, glorify them, I am happy to see the down side of drugs. Currently the films sits in the top 60 on the IMDb. Yet I had never seen it until yesterday, since so many people have recommended it. But I am still unsure that I enjoyed the film. I am a fan of films with styles like Spun, but maybe this film takes it a bit too far for my personal enjoyment. The storyline and acting are great, except Jennifer Connely's eyebrows thickness spoils it. I am not sure I ever really want to view this film again in its entirety. 8/10

Ghost Ship (2002)
Did i do something extremely bad in a past life?
4 February 2003
...to see such a poor film like this. I had heard mixed reviews about "Ghost ship". With a title like that at this day and age, the potential for a great movie is there but i was extremely disappointed. From the first few scenes i knew that this film would be a failure. With the right director (not Steve Beck) the gory scene at the beginning could have been much better. The acting wasn't too great and the way the story was told was very weak. Some parts of the film the audience, in my opinion, was told too much and other points too little, especially when dealing with the character dodge. Thank god the film didn't go on for too long and even with the 90 minutes that went on, the director seemed to have struggled by using the whole time up. In places the director put some short bursts of powerful riff's of heavy music just to try and make up for the lack of quality. I'm not even going to attempt giving this film a star rating..

Tasteless Comedy...
11 February 2002
...but damn its funny.

Over the many years of my life (16 in total) I have heard much about this famous quartet from the industrial town of Liverpool. As my family have told me, they were the biggest thing around at their time. They started the whole "pop video" idea and the whole "screaming girls" craze. In my own assumption, i figured that this was just a poofy boy band, but after watching this film I was proven wrong.

The satire is very over the top, but that is why I love it. The whole film promotes The Beatles just before they released their new album called..believe it or not, "A hard days night". The plot portrays the band as a bunch of goody goodies but also with a rebellious side towards the old generations. We also see a scene where the band actually read their fan mail and replies to each one, which obviously is not the case, but this is cleverly done, fooling the general public to write letters to the band.

The manager is a very easy man, relaxed but still on his toes. In real life cases, The Beatles manger is nothing like this, he was a stern man and didnt let the playing around of The Beatles pass him by.

In whole this film is cleverly put together. A hard days night put the whole British Film Industry under the spotlight. In later years we also see the failures of many other bands trying to achieve such a success in a film, to the likes of "Spice World", which was very poor. Lets hope that one day the BFI can come up with a similar and successful alternative to The Beatles hit.

Dude, Where's the fun?
10 February 2002
Could there be anymore uses of the word "dude"??

With this fact, this has to be the ultimate "dude" movie. Its scatty plot, its references to women and drugs. The general plot consists of two "dudes" who wake up one morning to discover they have no idea of what happened the night before. They have no clue to where their car is and along their way to finding it, they find out what actually happened.

The funniest scene in the whole film is when they are getting suited up after finding a suitcase of stolen money (which is being tracked down by a transexual stripper) and they notice they both have tattoo's on their back. One saying "dude" and the other "sweet". Repeatedly asking each other what their's say, leading to them confusing each other thinking theyre just complimenting each other.

The film consists of a thousand laughs and i will never get bored. A must see for all you fellow "dudes".

Idle Hands (1999)
7/10
spread out
8 February 2002
Idle Hands is perfectly balanced out. We have a plot full of horror, while not actually seeing the killings take place. This is balanced against the comedy genre. With a full hit of drug humor, Idle Hands is close on being a dude movie but with the horror, it rests firmly on the line.

With a cast of Seth Green, Devon Sawa and Jessica Alba, we are able to see the talent of future great films with these actors/actress'.

The Irony of a Bong killing the creature is very poor, but it's near enough a dude movie so its allowed...

I give this classic film 9/10. Its great on first viewing but second time round you may not stay to see the end of the film.

breathtaking

Dances with wolves is one of only two films that have changed my perspective on life. The other is The Shawshank Redemption, but Shawshank change me in a completely different way. Dance with Wolves taught me about the past, told me about how the Americans were. The length of the film does make some of the viewing uncomfortable, but once finished, it adds to the relief of the final scene.

I think that Costner does a great job with his acting and Directing. The fact that for one hour of the film we do not see any communication apart from Costner's narration and with the wolf. The film exceeds in all ways and with go down as one of my favourite films of all time.

Twin Town (1997)
Typically Welsh
14 October 2001
The first time i saw this i couldnt believe what i missed out on after two years of its release. The "Lewis Twins" taking drugs constantly is a typical welsh activity. Making bongs out of anything that has a hollow interior makes me laugh and tell myself how true. The welsh humour is superb and the acting is among the best, british screens have seen. Everytime i go to swansea i am reminded of this great film by three simple words. "pretty Sh*tty City". And its true. Rhys Ifans is one of the leading role's and compared to Notting Hill this film beats the hell out of it, heres to more great welsh films about drugs

Cats & Dogs (2001)
fun fun fun
11 September 2001
A film that expands your imagination. Going into the film i expected childish and dreadful humour, coming out i was still laughing. The thought that Cats & Dogs could talk and think like a human, is a very hard topic to write a film on, it could have easily flopped and become one of holywood's bloomers. But it excelled and became a great film. The graphics were very believable and actually made the audience think that the animals were talking, the plot was good, but the outcome was predictable.

The case of Dogs being the good guys and Cats being the enemy is biased and will upset many viewers, but overall this film, even though it appeals to the younger majority, is very entertaining and many ages will enjoy this experience.

comment?
10 September 2001
I heard about this film long before I heard it, it got given mixed reviews, so I decided to find out what it was all about. I had heard about the opening scenes and how it was a paradox. The crude beginning may have offended many viewers and may have shocked them, but these scenes intrigue the viewer to keep watching.

The story of Lester Burnham is depressing and tragic, a middle aged man chatting up his daughter's best friend are perfect examples of many sexually depressed men.

The character of Lester, is what men never want to be. Stuck in a non-active marriage with a daughter that hates you and a career that ends up in a fast food restaurant. He is infact portrayed as the average american male, but this plot ends in extraordinary results. The aftermath leaves you to think about how lucky you actually are and makes you think about the people around you and how precious they are.
