Jugée Coupable (2021)
Minus 100 stars
I never imagined a series could be so perfectly awful as this one. The plot is the most ridiculous at every turn. The dialogue is more wooden than the worst imitations of fake tragedy. The acting is outstandingly terirble in every single case.
Nearly all the action takes place "off camera" so all we watch are people standing around (or sitting having a coffee or a glass of wine) talking to each other.
All the original deaths upon which the events depend turn out to be accidents. Even the rape was "I don't know what happened all of a sudden". None of the plausible suspects are guilty.
French crime thrilelrs are usually rubbish but this one tops them all.
La promesse (2020)
Promised but never delivered
The first few episodes are very engaging, the two timescales work well alongside each other, although it certainly feels like two completely different series, due to the vats difference in acting. Olivier Marechal is clunky and unwatchable as ever, whilst Sofia Essaidi is subtle and intriguing. But then that ending! OMG, why would any writer even consider creating something with such a hopeless finale? Having spent a few hours wondering about the suspects, the impact on the families and communities, the impact on the police family, the meaning of all of this, then it's just an accident caused by someone we'd never really hardly seen?
Hidden Assets (2021)
Actors struggle in read-through of clunky nonsense
This might as well have been a radio play, given the over-expository dialogue. And where the actors have only had a quick look through the script before dialling in their reading from home.
Ulven kommer (2020)
Outstanding and subtle
What's intriguing about this series is how the viewer is given such a small amount of evidence on which to judge who is telling the truth, for more than half the episodes. Perhaps the only clue is how the mother never asks her daughter what happened, but instead tries to stop her speaking at all. And also just how convincing the daughter is - which is down to the incredible acting by Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl as Holly, who is another league to her co-actors.
Outlier (2020)
Outstandingly bad acting
The first five minutes of the main character giving a lecture, and then with her boyfriend feel like five hours. Counting the pauses is more entertaining than watching this nonsense. Shameful acting.
Bortført (2021)
Ridiculous
One star for the fast-paced plot which is what kept me watching.
A second (probably not intentionally) ending up with a fairly clear set of stereotypes:
Norwegians: selfish and arrogant
Israelis: selfish, arrogant, brutal and religiously obsessed
Daesh: selfish, arrogant, brutal and religiously obsessed
Hamas: actually having something to fight for but end up selfish and arrogant.
Zero stars for the acting.
Succession (2018)
"Succession" is the basically the same cast as M*A*S*H in the TV version
It's just clicked: "Succession" is the basically the same cast as M*A*S*H in the TV version
Tom/Frank
Shiv/HotLips
Kendall/Trapper
Roman/Hawkeye
Greg/Radar
Logan/Colonel
But seriously, why do so many US actors do this: pause for a moment as if they're thinking, but it's fake, probably to suppress some actual feeling? Is that a method? Even British actors do it when they're playing Americans in US productions. Watching 'Succession' and it's like 95% of the actors are all playing the same character.
