Raksha Bandhan (2022)
Another social science lecture from a Akshay Kumar starrer
In Hindi, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn & Ayushmann Khurrana are the handful of actors whose theatrical releases I watch in the nearest cinemas. As both Lal Singh Chadha and Raksha Bandhan released on the same day. I preferred to watch the latter as I was doubtful if the would be remain in the cinemas for my weekly dosage of film in the nearest theatre.
The story is about the protagonist giving an oath to his mother, that he would marry only after marrying off his four sisters. Rest of the film shows if the protagonist is able to fulfil his promise or not albeit the sacrifices that he makes on the personal front.
One of the positive aspect of the film in terms of storytelling was it was not stretched unnecessarily, unlike the films of similar genre, and the length of the movie avoided a tedious experience for the viewer, but the grievance would be that all the funny sequences of the film were already shown in the trailer, which killed the excitement for a viewer. Regarding the direction I wouldn't comment much as I haven't seen the previous films directed by the director. Yet one ought to commend for keeping the story-telling precise.
In terms of performance, Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Neeraj Sood were the highlight of the film. The only grievance would be the enacted by Bhumi and Sood were similar to the one seen in Subh Mangal Savdhan. While the supporting role played by the four sisters were praiseworthy.
In comparison to the previous films like Bachchan Pandey or Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan was quiet a decent outing for Akshay Kumar. It would be interesting if the same momentum is kept for the future films.
Bullet Train (2022)
An Entertaining movie that keeps a viewer entertained till the very end
I had been eagerly waiting for the film's release ever since the trailer of the film got released.
Seeing the mixed reviews and review vlogs made me a bit hesitant, but as it was action film I decided to shrug those reviews as reviews on these films are never to be taken seriously.
The film is about a reformed assassin given the task of robbing a brief case from a bullet train set for Kyoto. The rest of the film showcases numerous miscommunication that is albeit shown in a rib-tickling manner.
In terms of technical aspects, the writing is definitely not to be taken seriously but the action sequences showcased in the would keep a viewer entertained till the very end.
In terms of performance, apart from Brad Pitt, the duo of Aaron Taylor Johnson & Brian Tyree Henry were highlights of the. The former excelled in the action sequences while latter was witty with his one liners and his reference to Thomas Tank Engine. The audience would be surprised to see two cameo's featured in the film. One may have been as a gift for appearing in Lost City while the other one must have been kept for the sequel.
Would be exciting if a sequel for this movie is made.
Paappan (2022)
Would be enjoyable for those who watch without any expectation.
I was very much hesitant to watch this film as the last film that I saw of both the director(veteran Joshiy) and the principal protagonist(Suresh Gopi) were disasters in every possible way.
For the former, the last film that I saw was Laila O Laila, which was nothing but a horrendous rehash of True Lies, and for the latter, the last film that is saw was another horrendous venture, King and Commissioner, which was just a vehicle to cash on the past glory.
As there weren't any likable option for my weekly does of cinema in the nearest theatre, I opted to watch this film sans any expectation.
The film is about a female cop investigating series of murders which are somehow linked with each other. To ensure that the case is solved, her senior unofficially appoints a former cop, who happens to be her father and with whom she shares an uneasy relation. The rest of the film shows how the cop solves the case with the help of her father.
As it involves the usual tropes of investigative film, a admirer of such films would enjoy the film till the very end. The technical aspects of the film was laudable except for the climax and dialogue delivery of the lead actress which were shoddy in nature.
The veteran director, Joshiy, should be praised for keeping himself relevant with films like Pappan. One wonders as to how the director is able to keep himself relevant even after being written off and being in the industry for decades(only other exception is Sathyan Anthikkad).
In terms of performance, apart from Suresh Gopi (praise should be showered for portraying age related roles unlike his peers) among the supporting actors comprising of Shammi Thilakan, Vijayraghavan and Ajmal enacted their parts well. Except for his scenes with his father, Gokul Suresh was at the most inconsequential.
It would be interesting to see if both the director and the lead actor keep themselves relevant with such ventures for the future.
Mahaveeryar (2022)
Technically a well made film but not so much in terms of it's storyline
I was ecstatic to see Mahaveeryar 1) as it marked the return of the combo who made 83 (which I have not seen to this date) & Action Hero Biju, i.e Nivin Pauly & Abrid Shine; 2) found the trailer quite unique in comparison to the trailers of other films and 3) the genre of the film is in fantasy which is not seen much in Malayalam cinema.
Due to these reasons I ventured out to watch this movie for the usual dose of a weekly cinema in the nearest cinemas.
But the burden of expectation disappointed me as a viewer despite the technical finesse that the film displayed, as the story and it's execution shown in the film was not up to the mark, especially towards the 2nd half of the film and many questions were left unquestioned as a viewer.
In terms of performance all the actors enacted their parts well with Nivin Pauly, Lalu Alex & Siddique being the highlight of the film, yet it does not save the film from the mediocrity.
Hope that the next collaboration between the director and actor in the form of Action Hero Biju 2 does not turn out to be a dumper.
Janhit Mein Jaari (2022)
A Well Made Entertainer
For my weekly dose of a cinema in the nearest theatre, I was set to watch a Malayalam film, unfortunately it got postponed for the umpteenth time. Hence from the available list of films I opted to watch for Janhit Mein Jaari which I went to watch without any expectation.
Since it was produced by the director of Ayushmann Khuranna starrer Dream Girl, I expected the same from this film as well.
Like Dream Girl, in this the female protagonist of the film, secures a marketing job for a product which is considered to be taboo in the society. After getting married to her lover the rest of the film showcases if the protagonist is able to change the mindset of her family and society as whole towards the product which in the beginning of the film starts casually.
In terms of performance Nusrat Bharucha, debutant Anud Singh Dhaka, Paritosh Tripathi & Vijay Raaz were the highlights of the film in terms of performance. Meanwhile the script provided laughs till the very end but the only drawback was that towards the end of second half it seemed to be stretched out, yet it turned out to be decent entertainer.
But the saddest part was despite watching the film on the day of it's release, less than 10 had come to watch the film. Perhaps poor marketing can be blamed for the box office failure.
Anek (2022)
A Noble attempt muddled in it's 2nd half
A decade back for so, if a cinephile was asked, how he would rate Anubhav Sinha as a director, many would have termed him as a mediocre director.
Post 2018, after the release of Mulk he is considered as an acclaimed director along with movies like Article 15 and Thapped (TBH i have yet seen it)
Anek reunites the director with Ayushmann Khuranna, who was the principle protagonist in Article 15. If the latter is based on caste discrimination committed by the nefarious elements of the society then Anek is based on the how the nefarious elements create instability in the North East Region of the Country especially Nagaland.
Coming to the performance all the actors enacted their parts well with Andrea Kevichusa and Manoj Pahwa being the highlight of the film.
Unfortunately, despite the noble attempts made in the pretext of making another Article 15, we get a muddled and contrived film irrespective of the breathtaking cinematography.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022)
Surprisingly better than the First Part
As I had seen the original version of Bhool Bhulaiyaa in Malayalam.
My Excitement towards Bhool Bhulaiya wasn't much when it released as majority of the scenes were akin to the original.
As the day neared for the usual dose of weekly cinema in the theatre, only Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 interested me & TBH, I went to see it without any expectation. To my surprise it turned out to be better than the first part. The basic concept of the mystery room was kept in this film as well. But rather than showing the psychological issues that was shown in the first part, this film is an outright horror film. This made the film better than the first part.
In terms of Direction one could describe it as a comeback of sorts for Anees Bazmee.
In terms of performance, Tabu stands out, it gives the audience an indication that she would act in a film that is not terrible, which she has already proved with the selection of films in the form of Andhadhun and De De Pyar De. Karthik Aryan and Kiara Advani enacted their parts in decent manner. It is was good to see Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Mishra & Ashwini Kalsekar in one frame, but the spark in comparison to the films of the past was missing. Supporting actors comprising of Milind Gunaji, Amar Upadhayay was limited.
Runway 34 (2022)
Ajay Devgn for the first impresses as a Director
Ever Since the release of Singham, except for Rascals & RRR, I have seen all the films that have starred Ajay Devgn. But after Singham's release there has been a decline in the quality of films, with a few exception like Tanhaji, Raid & De De Pyaar De, that the actor has acted in. In terms of qualitative films the actor is getting back into the groove.
Coming to the direction
Back in 2016, i was awaiting for the release of Shivaay, but to my disappointment, it turned out to be too confusing as well as unrealistic. One would have similar apprehension if one would have compared Runway 34 with it. Surprisingly with Runway 34 the director in Ajay Devgn has directed quite a superior film which is on par with the top directors of Hindi film industry. In fact i would eager to watch more films directed by him in the future.
In Terms of Performance,
Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan, the veteran stood tall, with their performance. While the supporting actors enacted their parts well.
In terms of story,
The excitement shown in the first half could have been matched in the 2nd half if they had trimmed some scenes. Otherwise it can be ranked as one of the best thriller movies of the recent times.
