Firstly you should watch the Russian subtitled version. Watching the dubbed version will ruin the film. I watched 10 mins after I'd seen the original and there's no comparison. This is a fairly original Sci-Fi action spectacle that will leave you surprisingly impressed, amazed and dismissively critical all in one.
Surprisingly impressed because the film's visuals look like a $100,000,000 US blockbuster but was filmed for the Roubles equivalent of 4-5 million dollars. Any CGI was totally convincing and I've rarely seen so many genuine human extras willing to get slaughtered since CGI started to be used for crowd scenes. Also, the storyline has some nicely inventive originality.
Amazed: the large scale action sequences are some of the best I've ever seen. I'd mentally compare them to the beach scene at the start of Saving Private Ryan or Battle of the B******s in Game of Thrones.
Dismissively critical because the logic of the invasion timeline as described by the "visitor" is so laughable that I almost turned off the TV. Thankfully, after refreshing my drink I watched the rest of the film.
I don't want to spoil the film so I'll summarise it by saying that if you're happy with subtitles and want an exciting invasion Sci-Fi killing romp then this is the film for you. Just don't expect infallible logic or perfect science. It also sets up a sequel, which I'm looking forward to if it appears.
