Fast Food Nation (2006)
What an own goal. Read the book- leave the film alone.
I've only left a movie early once before and that was because I was bored. I left this film because I was disgusted and it insulted my intelligence by the ham-fisted way it unsuccessfully tried to drive home its (very important) message.
I'm really not sure what to think about the film. It starts out so well and ends up like a tacky corporate training video trying to ram morals down your throat. The book "Fast Food Nation" is a non-fiction investigation into the into the negative effects of the American fast food culture. I was expecting this movie to be similar to the recent "Thank you for not smoking"- it is not.
It was interesting seeing all the Hollywood cameos (I hope that they are all vegetarians) that must have really felt that they were delivering an important message by appearing in this stinker.
This film is aimed squarely at the average dumb American who really never thought that cows are killed to make burgers and that there are really nasty businessmen that would happily sell s*** as food as long as it turns a profit.
It is a bad, bad, bad movie. If you can read, read the book. If you can't read then this film is for you.
PS Fast food is evil. Do not eat it. Go home and make yourself a sandwich instead.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Less of an Action Movie, More of a Science Fiction Movie
Like Reloaded before it, this movie sees the story of The Matrix move away from being a mainstream popcorn action movie and towards being a "proper" sci-fi movie and I think that is the problem. Action fans will be alienated by all the talking and sci-fi fans will be alienated by the glossy over-the-top action. I am lucky; I sit between these two extremes and appreciate both genres. I almost feel like the movie was made for me.
There were a couple of times when it became concerned that the movie was failing, however, by the end of the film I walked away very impressed.
I think time will be the judge of The Matrix Trilogy. The story ends leaving many questions unanswered. If left like this people will talk about it for years to come- as they still do with Blade Runner. I doubt the studio will be able to leave it at that. Whilst another movie in ten years time would be good, I expect a deluge of comic books, novels, cartoons and computer games spin-offs, to follow- destroying all hope for debate and discussion.
The movie will not necessarily appeal to fans of the Die Hard series or 2001: A Space odyssey. It sits perfectly in the middle.
CinéMagique (2002)
Fantastic Journey Through the History of Cinema
This film is shown at Disney Studios in Disneyland Resort Paris.
The show starts as you sit in a darkened auditorium. A silent movie starts only to be interrupted by a mobile 'phone ringing. I must admit that I was totally taken in by this and got really mad when the guy gets up and starts talking to the caller about his lost luggage!
It becomes clear that the characters in the movie are aware of the man and with a pointing finger and a flash of pyrotechnics, the man is transported into the world of the movie. We see that the guy is, in fact, Martin Short.
What prevails is a chase through various well known movies from classic silent black and white movies to talkies and then colour. Martin Short is cleverly integrated using new footage and "Forrest Gump" style effects.
If you go to Disneyland Paris, be sure to check it out!
The Bermuda Triangle (1979)
Interesting Docudrama
I watched this as a kid on its original cinema run in the UK. I was nine years old and and the movie left a lasting impression on me- I can still vividly remember the stories (especially Flight 19 and the Philadelphia Experiment).
I've wondered about the film for many years, as it's format was rather strange for a cinema movie- The stories (I believe taken from Charles Berliz books "The Bermuda Triangle" and "The Philadelphia Experiment") were supposably true. The movie takes on dramatised documentary form, complete with overly serious presenter.
