Shelter in Solitude (2023)
A Powerfully Engaging Film
Oct 10, 2023
What a moving, entertaining, and thought-provoking film! It is beautiful to watch (Matthias Schubert, Director of Photography), finely tuned, thanks to the direction of Vibeke Muasya, and powerfully relatable to the people and themes we find every day in our lives. The setting in the early days of Covid and all the mystery of that time succinctly demonstrates the mystery and confusion that so many faced. The vulnerability and isolation for so many in all walks of life living through that time is palpable. Siobhan Fallon Hogan has succeeded once again (see RUSHED, if you haven't already) in creating clear, honest, and memorable characters with whom we can see, understand, and empathize/sympathize. The cast and crew have created a finely crafted work of nuanced relationships, emotions, and messages. Don't miss it!!!
Rushed (2021)
Difficult subject handled with honesty and poignancy
While the inciting incident is heartbreaking and painful to witness, the clarity and simplicity of how this mother and family process the horrible loss is spot on. The frustration and rage so many feel about this topic is succinctly represented and boiled down in the masterful portrayal by Siobhan Fallon Hogan of a very real mother and the other mothers - from many walks of life - she seeks out in an effort to end the insanity. When all the acceptable avenues of action are roadblocked, this strong mother does what everyone of us might imagine doing, and her brilliant and clear-eyed plan creates priceless twists and cunning suspense. The full development and portrayal of the mother's character artfully demonstrates her humor, faith, humility, and compassion. This film is a clear and simple treasure examining a horrible reality that too many families have endured.
