The Last of Us (2023)
Faithfully Executed.
I am a huge fan of the series and have been since the first game so was the most skeptical given Hollywood's track record with video game adaptations, suffice it to say- they nailed it. The game is incredibly narrative driven with long cutscenes and immersive environments that fully envelop you in the story., hence the game has always felt like living through a movie. Which is why I was so skeptical about them "going Holluwood" with such an incredible piece of storytelling. Shot for shot recreations, great casting and the same score composer for the soundtrack as the game. Brilliant. Genuinely excited for this.
Madly Bangali (2009)
Coming of Age classic.
Slightly self indulgent just like the target audience it's meant for. A coming of age film that is as underrated as it is elegant. I watched it long time ago when it was released and i've watched it again 12 year later. I finally get it.
Dune (2021)
Masterful.
Denis Villeneuve manages to envelop the viewer into his vision - completely and unapologetically. The world building is crafted to perfection and the score, my god the score, Hans Zimmer essentially pilots you to Arrakis and just like the shifting unpredictability of the desert sand itself, this motion picture experience takes you on a spiralized journey, especially if you are new to the Dune universe. Watch it. In a theater. You will not regret it.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Magic.
In a world choked by formulae and repetitive nostalgia jargon, we need voices that cut through the noise and present something truly fresh and original. Into the Spider-Verse manages to not only capture the visual style of comics but the heart and spirit of it as well. Beautiful to look at and unstoppable momentum throughout. It not only exceeded but downright shattered my expectations. Absolutely brilliant.
Ojing-eo geim: Kkanbu (2021)
A deep dive into the human psyche.
How far would you go when your back's against the wall? Masterfully executed, supremely acted. 10/10.
Nine Perfect Strangers: Ever After (2021)
Sometimes you need a little lift.
I was expecting the show take a darker and more mature turn, but the happy ending was kinda nice. Felt good about myself which doesn't come very often so can't complain.
