The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
The Best Bond movie ever made!
After being a fan for over 30 years and analyzing these films back and forth, I have made up my mind: The Spy Who Loved Me truly is the best Bond movie!
Yes, peak-Connery is tough competition and I do miss John Barry, but this film just got it all right from beginning to end.
Lewis Gilbert was always a great Bond-director, who could make Bond's world feel unique and exciting. This time, everyone else matched his level. It's beautifully filmed with smart and exciting action and locations. It gets the perfect balance between espionage-mystery-escapism that only Bond can do. Sexy girls, sinister villains, amazing sets and great lines. The perfect Bond movie.
Moonraker (1979)
Vintage Bond
One of the classic Bond movies. Last film that came out from the original Bond team (Lewis Gilbert, John Barry, Ken Adam & Co). These films had a unique style that sets them apart from all other action and adventure films. Bond movies that came after Moonraker are either doing reboots or "going back to basics". They try to find a balance like 33% old, 33% innovation and 33% contemporary. But Moonraker is going all-in on the EON Bond style and that's something I very much appreciate. It feels genuine.
Moonraker is not competing with the best Bond movies, but it is on the upper half. The things that stand out the most are the villain (insanely good by Michael Lonsdale), the locations, music, atmosphere and the amazing sets.
Some reviewer here commented that you can't fly over the British coast in 15 minutes. But that's a misunderstanding. They are 15 minutes AHEAD of schedule...
No Time to Die (2021)
We desperately need to get back to old-school Bond
This film is made by people that have zero confidence in the style of the Bond movies. They just dont think that a traditional movie with James Bond on a mission can work anymore. This film is entirely focused on the poetry and the drama, rather than the adventure itself. A shocking thing happens every 10'th minute just to make sure that no one falls to sleep.
Octopussy (1983)
100% Bond!
"I'm sure the General will get a big blast out of this!" - "I know he wont be disappointed."
Excellent film that must be among the best in the series. It really feels like a genuine Bond movie. Like Broccoli & Co went all in. Top- notch action, mysterious women, eccentric villains and great locations. And Roger Moore was born to be a leading man. When Connery got worse for each film, Moore just got better. In Octopussy he is super- confident and handles both the drama and humor with ease.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
Bring back the Connery/Moore style
A very confusing Bondfilm. This looks like just another action movie, and not a very good one. The editing is too Bourne like and not very effective. Forster's direction makes the film look rushed. None of the characters are memorable, not even Bond.
The story is very weak and there is far too much action. I missed classic lines, style, wit and some TRUE Bond-moments! There is a lack of originality here, sadly.
I think it is OK to remove the gadgets and Moneypenny but please, at least keep Bond in there next time.
