The SoulTaker (2001)
Stylized show with some substance
At 13 episodes, SoulTaker is a short series and benefits from excellent animation quality. The series is very cryptic up until the last few episodes and why many will end up confused after the first 2 volumes, I enjoyed them all. The characters are all fun and interesting and while this isn't the best anime series around, give it a try, its got that goth/horror/sci-fi elements mixed with the classic styled transformed-superhero action popular in the 80's.
One Hour Photo (2002)
A highly disturbing anti-thriller with excellent acting.
One Hour Photo follows "Sy the Photo Guy" your average old guy working at the photo center at your average *insert-name-here*-Mart. As everyone knows Sy is played by Robin Williams who shows off an uncanny acting ability that I wish we would've seen earlier. Sure, Williams is great as the funny guy, but he has such a great skill at well disturbing the hell out of me. The rest of the cast is pretty good, especially the boy Jacob, he was a good kid that had the perfect balance of youthful innocence and well not being annoying. Also while the plot can be somewhat predicted at certain points the end is great because you get completely set-up and then are given a 180. A lot of people will complain that the movie is slow and isn't a thriller, well then you came to the wrong movie. The film is a slow methodical thriller that sets up Sy's breakdown, not a thrill ride. its called suspense, look it up.
Guyver (1991)
It may not be a thoughtful film, it may not be a good film, but that doesn't mean its not fun!
When I was younger this was one of my favorite movies of all time. Well, needless to say I grew up. I watched it again and while the plot is weak, the acting isn't all that great, its still a fun movie to kick back and watch!
Boasting Mark Hamil as the star since he's the only recognizable actor, you'd think he's the hero, well he's not, he's just a government agent who allies with the the Guyver, a college student named Sean by day, super-power alien-warrior by night. The movie is in fact actually somewhat based off the anime pretty well. The movie is pretty much the first episode of the anime, just tweaked to America and aging the characters and well rushing the end of the anime to the live-action. Although the budget is under a million dollars the SFX are actually pretty good. Those rubber suits have never looked better! Plus there's a good Jaws parody that results in the death of J.J. Walker!
The movie makes me laugh sometimes intentionally and sometimes not, but I had fun the while way thru, so give a 10!
Men in Black II (2002)
Big disappointment
The first Men in Black is a great film, I mean its just got a good "feel" to it. The sequel? It loses that "feel".
Spoilers:
5 years have passed since the first film and J is still a hothead. Great character development, huh?
K works at a mail office after getting divorced from his wife. See? Some people should fake being in comatose states.
Evil plant alien, Surlina, (played by Lara Flynn Boyle)is boring and cliche, but at least she's hot.
She easily takes over MIB HQ and gathers up evil alien henchmen, who are very dangerous, yet as soon as K's back, he easily beats all of them in under a minute's time. J also beats an arch nemesis easily too.
Next, there's of course J's love interest who just happens to be key to the whole evil plot. Big shock huh? Of course in the end the good guys beat Surlina and save the day. As for the love story, it so tragic because they can't be with each other. Boo-hoo.
End Spoilers
The only thing saving this movie from absolute garbage, is tons of great one-liners and plenty of comedic gags, especially from Patrick Warburton who is defiantly not in the movie long enough.
Tobor the Great (1954)
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
what a great film! Its about a robot named Tobor which does some stuff in the 1950s. There's a little kid and a grandpa scientist and they do stuff, and thats pretty much the movie. I love how the evil spy gets in to the secret lab, which is simply the basement of the scientist. Very cool indeed.
Yeah, a great movie I saw on AMC one afternoon with ym dad. We both feel asleep from the boredom and woke up for the end. A great film I recommend to anyone who likes to laugh at things.
Spider-Man (2002)
The best Comic Book Film of all time. Nuff said.
Wow, today I along with millions of others, saw Spider-Man today (opening day) and all I can say is wow. Every good once in awhile, a movie succeeds my expectations. I didn't think Spider-Man would, mine were pretty high, but guess what, I was blown away by the sheer fun of this movie!
Is it the thinking man's movie, no, but is it what entertainment is all about? Yep, and that's why I gave this a rating of ten, course I'd really give it a 9.6 (more on that later.)
Tobey Maguire must really be a nerd in real life because he captured of the essence of Peter Parker beautifully, and his Spider-Man? He got that in a big way too. His Parker simply shines though, as a very believable hero.
William Dafoe, man what a great actor, shame the Oscar's will snub this film, because Dafoe simply scares me with his sheer ability to play an insane man. His reason in becoming the Goblin is very believable and well this villain is evil. Flat-out evil. Innocent lives? The Goblin sure doesn't care.
Kirstin Dunst, she looks good, and she acts pretty good, course my only complaint is her scenes while good and give the film depth just kinda drag due to her. She's slow in delivering lines...She's the reason knock this film down to 9.6
The rest of the cast; Aunt May and Uncle Ben were great and especially J. Jonah Jameson, this guy shines throughout the entire film. And of course, Bruce Campbell, wow I love this guy, I also love the fact that he's integral to Spidey's name. You'll understand after watching the film.
And finally for the comic fan, can you find all the homages? hehe, there everywhere and they were great.
Overall, this film was excellent entertainment and kept me entertained the whole way throughout. Go see it ASAP!
Lord of the Flies (1990)
If you liked the book, stay far, far away
Wow, I've never seen an adaption as horrible as this. The film is a mockery of the book. first it completely rewires so many key elements of the book, and although the book is about British kids who are being sent to Australia to save them from the horrors of war, in this film, they are Americans who are coming home from military school in Australia(?) who should technically all know each other, but they really don't. oh and may I say one thing? There was never an adult on the island. Never! Yet in this movie there is, and well he makes a lot of changes to the book.
I'll say ti again, if you liked the book, stay far, far away from this piece of garbage. And if you haven't read the book? Stay away anyways and go read the book.
Fallen (1998)
A little-known classic
What a great movie. Its a shame that this film is not known by many. The story opens with Det. John Hobbes (Washington) "dying" in the snow. We then flashback to the incidents prior to this event, which makes up the movie. Hobbes brought a serial killer to justice, now said killer is to be executed. Hobbes watches the mad die in the chair, but its not over. In fact its just begun, the killer is actually a "ghost" now, I don't want to spoil the plot for you, because they're some very interesting things brought up about the killer. But anyways, the killer now inhabits bodies of others and starts his killing spree yet again. Hobbes investigates and soon learns that his old enemy has survived somehow, and soon learns of biblical ties to the killer. Soon, the chase begins, and Hobbes becomes both predator and prey.
Overall, this movie was excellent. a 10, thanks to superb acting from all the cast, and the direction of the film was great, especially when you see the through the eyes of the killer. And the ending is the best I've seen in a movie. Ever.
