Clerks (2000)
Wow Funny As Hell
This is one of the funniest shows ever!!! I can't believe ABC cancelled such a brilliant show. I wish they would bring it back, I have the DVD though, it's a great buy. Personnally I thought this was better than the movie. Dante and Randall are hilarious together, and so are Jay and Silent Bob. My favorite was the flashback episode, I think it was Episode 2, where Randall and Dante get locked in a freezer. Watch this show, it's a classic!!
The Scorpion King (2002)
Grade: A-
I like action films a lot. Explosions, gunfire, they excite me in movies. But adventure films don't really do anything for me. The lack of freshness is very blatant to me in most adventure films. I saw "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" and was not impressed by their mediocrity. I had to be dragged to see "The Scorpion King". I was definately suprised. The Rock proved himself to be more than just big macho wrestler, but also a bona fide action star with potential. While he is obviously not going to be up for any Oscars, and neither will his film, but I enjoyed his performance, as well as the performances of all the other actors. This film provided enough action to tide me over for an hour and a half, and I enjoyed it. i reccomend it to action fans and just anybody looking for a good time.
New York: A Documentary Film (1999)
Sheds Light
As a native New Yorker, i really found this documentary on New York very interesting. Ken burns did very good work on the "Jazz" documentary, and I found this on PBS one Saturday. I was very interested on how New York would be portrayed, and it was portrayed kust like it is, a wonderful city with a long history. "New York" is not to be missed by any New Yorker or anyone interested in New York.

Futurama (1999)
Good Show
"Futurama" may not have everything it's sister show "The Simpsons" has, but it is definately a good show. It shows humor and wit just as "The Simpsons" does.
While "The Simpsons" has not faltered in the 13 years it has been on the air, I have found that some of the recent episodes of "Futurama" have lacked the character and the overall goodness that makes it a great show. However, I still think "Futurama" is a good show to watch and I reccomend it to all fans of TV, especcially of "The Simpsons".
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Stupid, Yet Funny
I have seen many dumb comedies in my lifetime. From "Airplane" to "American Pie" critics have panned most and raved about a very selected few. While many dumb comedies try to be appreciated by both critics and fans, and while many try to incorporate a message into them, "Dude Wheres My Car" tries to none of these things. While many people have expresed hatred for this extremly stupid film, it is stupid yet funny. The gags and jokes are funny, and while dumb films can be supremely annoying (ie. "Saving Silverman", "Tomcats") the annoying aspect of "Dude Wheres My Car" work out for the better resultin in funny gags. This film wears its stupidity on its sleeve, appartently just trying to appeal to the preteen/teen group of people who tend to appreciate the dumb, stupid, and brainless films, such as this one.
Stupidity can work out in hilarity ad Seann William Scott and Ashton Kutcher, the films stoner stars, know this, acting stupid for the entire film, resulting in a set of hilarous gags worth seeing.

Jakob the Liar (1999)
Another Holocaust Film
Roberto Benigni's 1997 Italian Oscar winning hit "Life Is Beautiful" shares the same Holocaust theme as "Jakob The Liar". This took some of the steam off "Jakob The Liar". While "Life Is Beautiful" was a huge critical hit, "Jakob The Liar" was not as appreciated. Robin Williams puts in a surprising performance in this heartfelt, touching, interessting, and beautiful movie about a group of Jewish people in a Nazi German ghetto. I liked this film a lot and you will too. A
John Q (2002)
WOW! BRILLIANT AND MESMIRIZING!
"John Q"
PG-13 for violence, language, and intense thematic elements
Starring: Denzel Washington, Kimberly Elise, Daniel E. Smith, Anne Heche, and James Woods
Plot: When a 9 year old boy (Daniel E. Smith) needs a heart transplant to live that his parents can't afford, his father (Denzel Washington) takes an ER hostage.
"John Q" is a very brilliant film. I can't wait for the DVD. Though it is pretty much an insured hit, it sure earned the money it is making right now. Denzel Washington is brilliant as the father, it is almost an alter-ego to Alonzo Harris, the character he played in "Training Day". While Harris likes to corrupt the system, John Q. Archibald tries to make the system better. This movie is almost a message to health care providers, a plead for better health care for the millions of Americans who have poor or no health care.
The other actors do brilliant jobs. Kimberly Elise is brilliant as the worried mother, and Daniel E. Smith was very brilliant in his first role as the son, the wonderfully innocent Mikey Archibald. Anne Heche is a cold being in this movie, playing the head of the hospital, who denies an operation until the Archibalds can get them the money needed. James Woods is another cold being as a doctor. The hostages are brilliant in their roles. Eddie Griffin is a stereotypical black man from the urban streets. Sean Hatosy is a wife beating trailer trash punk, and Heather Wahlquist is hisgirlfriend. There are more hostages, all playing a brilliant and important role in this sentimental film.
John Q is portrayed as a hero in this film, a father who will go to any lengths to save his son. He is portrayed as a nice guy, an innocent father, while the hospital and insurance agency are portrayed as the bad guys, so you can see from what viewpoint this film was made from. This does not matter though. My grandmother cried during the film, and the whole audience in the theater enjoyed it.
Overall I would like to reccomend this brilliantly composed film. Though the maturity level might limit this film to teenagers and older, it is still a brilliant film that I reccomend to everyone.

The Hurricane (1999)
Great Bipoic
"The Hurricane"
Rated R for language and some violent content
Starring Denzel Washington, Vicellous Reon Shannon, and John Hannah
Plot: A boxer (Washington), is sent to prison for life for a murder he did not commit. A group of Canadians, led by a fierce, young Brooklynite (Shannon), try their hardest to get him out of jail.
As you probably know, "The Hurricane" is based on the story of boxer Ruben "Hurricane" Carter, who was jailed in the 1960s for a murder that he did not commit. Though the film doesn't have all the facts straight, as they were presented in the biography of Carter by James S. Hirsch, but some of them are right. He is from New Jersey, and he was jailed with a young man named John Artis (Garland Whitt).
In the film, Vicellous Reon Shannon plays Lezra Martin, a young Brooklynite living with some Canadians in Toronto. Martin stumbles upon a "The 16th Round", an actual autobiography written by Carter. Intrigued by Carter's story, Martin believes in his innocence and starts exchanging letters with Carter, who is at this point in a Trenton prison. They soon meet and Martin convinces his caretakers, a few educated Canadians, to get a lawyer to fight for Carter's freedom.
Shannon has a breakout performance, as does Denzel Washington as Ruben Carter. I believe Washington is definately one of the best actors in the world right now, putting compelling performances into everyone of his flicks. Washington brings presence to this drama, and if Carter, a hotshot boxer who never listens to the rules, were played by someone else, it probably wouldn't be as good as Washington's performance. Washington's performance, as well as the breakout one by Shannon, is indeed worth seeing the film for, even though it is a brilliant film anyway. Kudos on this great biopic.

Series 7: The Contenders (2001)
Brilliant And Original Creation
Series 7: The Contenders
Starring Brooke Smith and Marylouise Burke
Rated R for strong violent content and language
Plot Summary: Three episodes of a popular TV series in which the last contestant alive wins.
Here is what I have to say about "Series 7". It is a very innovative film, and is very versatile also. It is an action flick, a drama, a romance flick, a suspense flick, and a black comedy. First I will talk about the action. The action is brilliant. Of course a flick about a reality show where contestants are killed off is going to have action, but the action is this one is brilliant and violent, with each contestant having a brilliantly thought up death, except the winner, who wins in such a way that has "sequel" written all over it. Personally I hope it spawns a sequel.
It is also a drama, as the contestants tell their personal stories of hardship. They all live in a small Southwestern Connecticut town (it is fictional but I think it is Norwalk in real life). Each contestant telles a different story, from the tough family man Tony (Michael Kaycheck) to pregnant Dawn (Brooke Smith), who won the last game and has a broken relationship with her mother, explained in the film. Seeing the characters die and seeing an end being put to their stories definately qualifies this as a drama.
"Series 7" is also a romance flick. From the goth type music video that shows the characters Jeff (Glenn Fitzgerald) and Dawn (Brooke Smith) as teens in love, to the love between Jeff, a testicular cancer patient, and Dawn for the film, in which Jeff even ditches his wife for Dawn.
This flick also is a suspenseful movie, keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat trying to guess who will win and waiting to see who dies next.
The film also has elements of black comedy, as it is a spoof of reality shows, and spoofs those shows in brilliant fashion.
As you can see, "Series 7" is a brilliant film which is versatile and a definate reccomended viewing.

Any Given Sunday (1999)
A Chilling Look At Pro Football
Any Given Sunday
Rated R for strong language and some nudity/sexuality
Starring Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx, Dennis Quaid, Cameron Diaz, and LL Cool J
Plot Summary: Oliver Stone directs an inside view at pro football, as a third string hot shot quarter back must face off with his old school head coach and aging quarterback.
This film was a gritty but glossy look at the world of professional football. The head coach of the fictional team the Miami Sharks (Al Pacino), faces off with the popular third string quarterback (Jamie Foxx) who helps lead them to the playoffs, and with the young new school team owner (Cameron Diaz). This dramatic film has brilliant football scenes as well as an excellent soundtrack, which was seperated in two cds, both of them reccomended by me. The drama, which deals with the brilliant sport of football, is great.
Director Oliver Stone rips football open, destroying everything ever known about football and questioning everything that goes on behind the scenes of football and in the locker. The sex, drugs, and partying is a new look at what professional athletes really do with their millions of dollars. Though the film is very long the film goes by quickly, and the two and three quarter hours go by quickly. A highly reccomend this chillingly brilliant film.
My Rating: 8.5 out of 10 or B+
Scream 3 (2000)
Craptacular
Rated R for strong horror violence and language
Plot Summary: No matter how hard she tries, Sidney Presoctt (Campbell), cannot escape her haunted past. Her past comes back to her when the cast of a horror movie based on some local murders starts being murdered, and she is haunted one again.
Though I enjoyed the cornball horror of the original "Scream", the second one wasn't as good, and the third was just crap. The ending was sad, though the whole story sucks. Sure, it may be an OK, though corny, premise for a movie or trilogy, but how many damn movies can be stretched out from one concept. Aside from some suspenseful moments, a few funny ones, and great gore, special effects, and a brilliant hard rock soundtrack, the cast and crew of "Scream 3" did clearly not put as much effort into this one as the original, or even the second "Scream".
The original "Scream", released back in 1996, resurected the teen slasher genre from the 70s and 80s. Long after "Friday The 13th", "Halloween", and "The NIghtmare On Elm Street" were first viewed and exploded into long serieses, a whole new breed of teen slasher movies gave teen actors work. Even "Halloween" and "Friday The 13th" have new movies coming out this year ("Halloween: The Homecoming" and "Jason X"). The plethora of teen stars such as Jennifer Love Hewitt exploded in such movies as "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend". As long as crappy sequels are being made, what is to look forward to in this genre. "Scream" was a guilty pleasure, but now with crap like this, "Urban Legends 2" coming out, what is there to look forward to. "The Forsaken" and "Dracula 2000" didn't fare to well at the box office. Neither did "Valentine", but "Jeepers Creepers" did okay. While I have heard good things about "Thirteen Ghosts", how much different could it be then the others. "Halloween" and "Friday The 13th" were good, but they spawned so many sequels that the originals are just forgotten. I guess the Snoop Dogg vehicle "Bones" is different, it is a ghettofied horror flick, bu this was just not worth seeing. See it only if there is nothing else to rent.
My Rating: 4 .5 out of 10 or C
The Parent Trap (1998)
OK
Rated PG for some mild mischief
Plot Summary: Two identical twins (Lohan),who both no nothing about each other, meet at a summer camp and switch places in an effort to reunite their parents (Quaid and Richardson)
Let me tell you about the actors and actresses in this film. I did not see the original so I have nothing to compare this movie to, but I think it is similar tot the movie "It Takes Two". Lindsay Lohan does a brilliant job playing Annie and Hallie, two twins whose parents broke up when they were little. She does sort of an Olsen twins performence, similar to the one in "It Takes Two", where the Olsen twins play twins in the exact same plot. Dennis Quaid does a nice job as the clueless father who is falling into the trap by falling in love with the soon-to-be stepmother, Blake Hendrix in a nice Cruella De Vil performance. The twins try their hardest to get their parents, played by Richardson and Quaid, together, going as far as to make sure the two meet at a hotel while on vacation.
This film plays well as a comedy, as the twins adjust to different lifestyles, one is from a rich British house, the other is from a ranch in Northern California, with plenty of sight gags, but as the story goes on, a romance develops, not only between the divorced parents, but also between the butler and the housekeeper, played brilliantly by Kunz and Walters. This movie can also be described as a chick flick, as it fits the category of that and a family film, warm, funny, and romantic, with a preteen lead. I saw this movie first on a plane and was suprised that it was pretty good, and even viewed it a few more times. All in all I thought this was a pretty good flick, and I reccomend it to you, especcially if you are on a date or with your family.
My Rating: 6.5 out of 10 or B
Big Daddy (1999)
different
In "Big Daddy" Adam Sandler plays a slacker who adopts a child to impress his girlfriend. When this doesn't work he tries to give the kid up, and that's whent this movie becomes more then just a lazy, stupid Adam Sandler movie.
I'm not saying this is the best of movies, but the stupid messed up character he played in such movies as "Happy Gilmore" and "The Waterboy" isn't felt as much in this movie. Instead he replaces it with a slacker that only cares about himself. He adopts a little boy and the result is funny, as his lazy slacker tries to take care of the kid. The movie has many entertaining moments but has some dark moments too. When they try taking the kid away from Sonny, it folds into a family court case that gets a little sappy. Overall I reccomend this fim due to the brilliant but crude humor that makes it funny. Sandler doesn't have to play stupid to be funny, overall, and he has help from Cole and Dylan Sprouse (the cute twins who play the boy), plus friends such as Jon Stewart and Rob Schneider. He also has a small romantic affair with a woman (Joely Lauren Adams) that doesn't play a big part in the film, which is good because the plot doesn't need it anyway, even though Adams is entertaining in the part.
Overall Score: 4 out of 5 stars or B (in an A through F scale)
Lean on Me (1989)
Inspiring And Brilliant
"Lean On Me" is a brilliant and inspiring film that blends wisdom and street smarts to make a drama that excels above the rest. It came after brilliant school dramas such as "The Breakfast Club" and before brilliant ones such as "Light It Up". It is a pinnacle in dramatic film-making.
Morgan Freeman's hard-nosed Principal Joe Clark brings loud obnoxious brilliance that holds up this film. He saves an urban New Jersey school from going overboard, just like movies like "Stand And Deliver". He overcomes obstacles such as the PTA and the Board Of Education, and even the police. The plot is a good one but is just a run of the mill one. Despite its ordinary (but good) plot the performances hold this film together and make it a very enjoyable presence in modern film-making.
My Grade: A-
