Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
It's a musical for Marley Fans
It's this simply, if you love the music of Bob Marley you will enjoy this film.
It is not the greatest telling of his story, it's disjointed and confusing in part, unless you already know the story so well you don't need to follow the movie.
It's well cast. The lead actor is , for me, excellent. Moving and inciteful. He captures Bobs voice and movement, great job.
The cinematography is lovely, the colours and sound are very good.
If you want a serious deep epitaph to Robert Nesta Marley this is not it.
If you don't enjoy his music , this isn't for you
But if you grew up with some Bob Marley and the Wailers albums playing at full belt while you danced around your bedroom. It's a great film.
RIP Bob x.
Inside Man (2022)
The Lure of a Clever Explanation that Never Comes
I've watched this all through ( gritted teeth) waiting for the big reveal that rattles it's coming practically from the start of the show.
It starts with some promise, it's unrealistic and people take some ridiculously daft options but hey , that's drama fiction for you. But then, it just lingers and drags out a story. It could have been done in 2 episodes and still provided room for a far better ending.
I've given a 6 stars for Tucci, removed 3 for the abysmal ending and then added a star for the theme song, nearly as good as Peaky blinders :)
Don't watch this , you'll wait all through to find out what happens and then ........ you wont!
Jersey Boys (2014)
Fun and lively
Seems some people are disappointed in this film directed by Clint Eastwood. I'm not, it's just great. I love that the film is narrated by all 4 band members. It's gives a really funky perspective and reminds me that there is more than one side to every story. The acting isn't Oscar nominated but that's not what this film is about, it isn't a great exhibition of acting, it's story telling done to music, Jersey style. The characters are very stereotypical and for all I know are how the 4 Seasons behaved, I don't care. The music is wonderful, the cinematography is fab and the story moves at pace. If you need a film to watch with a drink and a couple of friends then this will have you toe tapping and singing. I'm going to say that if you are dissing it, you were expecting Dirty Harry :)
Roald Dahl's Esio Trot (2015)
Enchanting
This is a simple sweet tale.Nothing to dislike. The story is cute and inoffensive. The film has been written to pad out the story and it has done so in a sympathetic and appropriate fashion. The thing that makes it so delightful is how Hoffman and Dench make the characters adorable and relatable regardless of the fact that they are unlikely. If you don't like charm, wit and a bit of suspending disbelief, move along. I intend to use this to vet people in the future. If they don't like this movie I won't be going for coffee with them. Relax, turn off your cynicism and wallow in the treacle and charm until your all marshmallow inside. :)
Goodnight, Mister Tom (1998)
Love this
There is a certain corniness to this story, and a good job there is too. It's just a tale of love, plain and simple. John Thaw is heartbreakingly wonderful as the grumpy chap who has wrapped himself away since his life was torn apart during the First World War. Now during World War 2 he is forced to take in an evacuee. They each have problems to overcome and what they each have to contribute is no expectations from the other. The villagers are lovely support cast and the lad is fine. But this is Thaw vehicle and he carries the whole thing with a tiny paw from the most beautiful dog. If you don't have a little cry then your tear ducts must be blocked.😀
