The Baxters (2024– )

Enjoyable and better than I anticipated!
11 April 2024
I had some misgivings about this series knowing it might be heavy on the religious aspect but I have to say I'm enjoying it. Faith and God are so important in this family's lives and is brought into conversations often but it isn't over-the-top. They are not a perfect family by any means and I liked the different issues and conflicts that tested them.

I haven't read any of the books the series is based on, so it may be easier for me to like the stories and characters more than those who have read the books. In my experience I have always been disappointed in the changes made when books are condensed to fit television so I'm happy that I'm watching this with an unbiased view.

I would love to see more episodes in the coming years and do wish the episodes were longer in length. Happy to see this series on Amazon Prime Video!

Meet Me Under the Mistletoe (2023 TV Movie)

Snooze...
10 January 2024
I gave it a try, I really did. But after 45 minutes I hit delete on my PVR.

I'm quite sure actual real estate agents wouldn't act like these two did, trying to one-up each other to get a real estate listing. If they did, they wouldn't be selling my home. But as the story goes, they learn to work together and begin to like each other. Not exactly a new plot twist.

I'm not sure why Great American Family movies always have to have music playing in the background. Instead of adding to the movie, I find it annoying and distracting.

Pass on this one because there are much better Christmas movies out there.

A Christmas for the Ages (2023 TV Movie)

So much potential . . . .
7 January 2024
I agree with some other viewers that this movie could have been so much more. With four generations of women there were so many stories that could have been told. The entire movie seemed to be just a lot of dialogue between family members with no real storyline other than it's Christmas. The only highlights for me were the dinners themed to various decades and maybe the final scene. Other than that, there was absolutely nothing to hold my interest.

Add the always present (and annoying) background music, some Christmas decorations and religious references and there you have it - a Great American Family Christmas movie.

My Christmas Hero (2023 TV Movie)

Nice Christmas movie
31 December 2023
This was a mostly enjoyable Christmas movie, with a military theme. Candace Cameron Bure is in the leading role as well as being an executive producer in this movie made for Great American Family. The movie centres on military personnel, their sacrifices and how their life may be affected as a PTSD survivor.

Although I enjoyed this movie, I feel like Bure needs to start acting a little less like an ingenue in her roles. The scene when she went for a hot cocoa date and ended up with whipped cream on her face was a little too cutesy for someone of her age, unless she's determined to be cast as a perennial thirty-something actress forever. As a side note, Teryl Rothery who plays her mother in this movie is only fourteen years older than Bure.

Pretty good
9 December 2023
The last GAF movie I watched had over the top autumn decorations and annoying background music. Fast forward to this Christmas movie and now we have over the top Christmas decor and more distracting background music. I'm not sure who thinks this adds to the movies but please stop!

Other than these distractions, I thought it was a good movie although the pace was slow, especially the romance between Addie and James. The leads, Merritt Patterson and Trevor Donovan, worked well together and I liked the interactions with Jayne Eastwood's "Nana". Probably not a movie I'd watch again but enjoyable for a one time view.

Could have been good . . .
1 December 2023
I've continued to watch movies I really didn't care for until the end but making it halfway through this one was more than enough for me. The over-the-top garish fall decor was too distracting as was some of the background music playing while actors were having a conversation. I'm not sure who in their right mind would have approved the set decor in this movie. Note to the decorating and props departments: less is more.

I've seen the lead actors in other movies and enjoyed them so maybe it was just the script because I found their acting to be very lacklustre. Or maybe their performances were just overshadowed by all the fake fall decorations.

Sullivan's Crossing (2023– )

First season was great - waiting for Season 2!!
13 August 2023
Too often when books are developed into a movie or series, it's not true to the original story. For this reason, I decided to watch the television version before reading the books so I wouldn't be critical of differences in the story.

Families can be complex, as it is with Maggie Sullivan, her family, and many of the secondary characters. This may be why some reviewers called the show depressing because of the conflicts and emotions being portrayed.

Although the first episode didn't fully draw me into the storyline, as the series progressed I found myself liking it more and more. By the time I reached the last episode, I wasn't wanting it to end. I'm happy there will be a second season and look forward to the continuing story.

Entertaining series!
12 March 2023
I wasn't sure what to expect from this new series but I'm really enjoying it.

Victoria is a writer of mysteries and her writing is losing its edge. Darby is a police officer who wants to become a detective. Mother and daughter duo, Victoria (Lea Thompson) and Darby (Stacey Farber) start working together to solve crimes and in doing so, begin to mend their fractious relationship.

Although Victoria and Darby don't have a good relationship in the beginning, as the series progresses you can see them starting to realize they are a little too much alike and both need to give a little if they are going to be able to live and work together.

The episodes have been entertaining so far with a combination of humour (thank you Lea Thompson) and drama and the storyline moves at a good pace. All in all, a very likeable series.

Christmas Plus One (2022 TV Movie)

A Feel Good Christmas movie!
8 January 2023
Christmas Plus One is one of my favourite Christmas movies of 2022. The storyline was a little different than a typical Christmas movie which was a nice change. Cara (Emily Alatalo) tries to find Chace (Andrew Bushell) after they connect while sharing a ride home to their families for Christmas and Cara loses his phone number.

I loved the close relationship between Cara and her sister Amy and their tradition of making Christmas wishes. Add in Corey Sevier and this made a great movie.

I didn't find the background music overbearing, in fact I liked it. This is a movie I'll definitely watch again.

Refreshingly different!
14 June 2022
This is the best Hallmark movie I've seen in a while. Loved the banter between the lead characters and the mothers added a touch of humour as well. It wasn't a typical Hallmark movie plot and is definitely a movie I'll watch again.

The Wait is Over
18 March 2022
I'm so happy to return to Hope Valley and see what's new with my favourite characters. The season premiere did not disappoint. The community is growing and it's nice to see new faces added and new storylines starting. When Calls the Heart continues to bring a smile to my face and joy to my heart. I'm looking forward to all the new stories this season will bring.
