Night Swim (2024)

Wishing pool
30 January 2024
What could go wrong in a pool party?

Well, actually many things specially when it's haunted.

Night swim comes from Bryce Mcguire known for a couple of short films before teaming up with blumhouse and producer James Wan for a complete flick based on the shor horror movie with the same name from 2014 with Mcguire as the writer.

The story follows a typical family dealing with and health issue surrounding the father(Wyat Russell) which is a retired baseball player longing for the old days while they're looking for the perfect house for a new start.

They end up with one that got a pool even. Because who knows? Maybe playing marco, polo is good for our health generally But sometimes bad things come up wrapped in roses and butterflies gift paper.

It got the scary location vibes and all the extra shenanigans that comes with like the lights blinking all over the place and visions of shadows isn't there, even the family's pet disappearance as a sign for the horror to begin but all of it seems repetitive and lacking in creativity, though it's hard a genre already using all the tricks available for a simple shallow jumpscare.

It throws us a tatse from the amityville horror parenting guide with a pool deep as the hole in the movie "the hole(2009)" and delivers a fun 90-ish minute fun run for popcorn eating.

One deer can be a good omen, maybe, but a bunch of them? I don't think so. Brought to us by the brilliant mind behind the "Mr. Robot" series by Sam Esmail and Netflix, and based on the book, we deep dive into the matter of "what's the worst thing that it can get too" with a slow-burning thriller about another type of end of the world. With a great cast including Julia Roberts,Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and the prepared man himself, Kevin Bacon, and intriguing camera work, you could see yourself drowning in a stoey surrounding an unsolved dilemma and an unknown, shaky truth about what's happening outside while trapped in a sandbox. Tension starts to rise as everything unfolds during four chapters, with each one of them presenting a piece of the puzzle while maintaining the rhythm of a thought-provoking ending. Strong acting is followed by good cinematography and a suitable soundtrack, making it a worthy watch for a two-hour plus flick.

Atypical love story
11 December 2023
"Its the moral grey areas that are intresting" as it was spoken by Natalie portman whose portraiting a ambitious actress trying to capture a new weird story for her next film surrounding a erotic scandal for some and a modern romeo and juliet tale for others.

The story follows the couple Joe(Charles Melton) and Gracie Atherton-yoo(Julianne Moore) almost two decades after their national media frenzy occurrence that shaped later their whole lives.as they struggle to maintain a quiet life while raising thier children another wave of attention comes around after Elizabeth Berry(Natalie Portman) an actress comes around asking for questions and digging up the past to use it a material for a new film project.

Directed by Todd Haynes known for blurred gender and dystopian movies And produced by netflix May December dives into the the story inspired by true events about Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau with a powerful cast abd decent acting from both lead roles as they cover the complexity of human emotions.

Through the movie we witness the imitation game between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore While the truth unveils about the real intentions behind all of this charade.

Julianne Moore shines in a Troubled adult with unresolved issues character which feels pretty natural.

Irritating soundtrack sticks to the background during the whole film that displays calm scenery scenes in the middle of a stressed-ful situation that the whole family is going through.

A good watch if you are interested in such stories.

Drained canals

Well, venice can never be wrong as a filming location as it is the most powerful point in this movie.

The third installment in a series that keeps going downward brought to us by Kenneth Branagh just can't get it right.

As we are caught in another classic whodunit case with a spooky theme and a dash of Halloween set in a rural old haunted palazzo with woods and pipes creaking all over it.

The acting level is mediocre as they can't seem to comprehense what's the room temperature while trying to maintain a serious expressions that turn out to get corny as we get toward the second half of the film.

The cinematography and visuals are satisfying and the soundtrack suits the mood but the story is super facial and lacking in essence and it can considered a waste for an good cast assembly.

Can be watched for the fun of it but don't expect something like the "knives out" world or Sherlock's.

A fight for survival in the middle of the ocean!

Might seem like an old story but imagine being a pregnant woman?

Coming from netflix and director Albert Pinto As his first recognised movie (thanks to netflix) with a new twist and different take on the survival thriller genre that's getting cliche over time.

Good performance from Anna Castillo as she was grinding throughout ghe whole movie all while looking after her infant and learning the art of crafting.

Good direction and camera shots came in helpful for one-location movie but all the struglle may get dull during the middle of it.

A one timer for the survival lovers.

Pet killer sloth
26 September 2023
Much unexpected really!

And i don't mean it in a good way We got a coke popping, car driving, betrayed by society sloth Hunting a sorority girls throughout the whole movie and giving some of them a joker's smile.

Well the lesson to learn is to never get a card from a stranger like Emily(Lisa Ambalavanar) Did as she ran into an exotic animal trader with a different kind of predator in hand.

Good soundtrack is up there, but nothing much else to be honest it supposed to be funny and silly but the right balance of it is missing with the whole equation tends to be dumb rather than good goofyness.

Enough effort and not bad acting won't cover it for a silly idea with Much blood spilled as the sloth makes it's way through the house and you can hear the screams in every scene but that wasn't enough to cut it though to consider it even an horror flick.

A one time watch if you only curious about it.

Fate or statistics

Another rom-com flick from netflix But unlike the others that have been coming out in the genre lately this one got a soul to it

As the story is taken from the book with the same name by Jennifer E. Williams and brought to life with the chemistry between Ben Hardy and Haley Lu Richardson you can feel the sparks flying un the air their eyes collide in every scene.

With an soft soundtrack added back to some semi melancholy london scenery you could blend into all the possibilities that a coincidence could bring to a normal day at the airport, possibilities and opportunities that require some heart to turn them into reality And the answering the question "is it better to have something great and lose it,or to never have it at all?"

A nice watch with a girlfriend or after a hard break-up maybe to lift you up like other movies like Five Feet Apart or Purple Hearts Ut delivers the good feeling you need during it's 90 minut-ish run.

Raw blood

Warning: Spoilers
A miss shot!

Could have been way better than this but there were too much errors that got looked over because of the cost of heading toward an open ending.

The story was a nice take on the dracula tale but it moved forward with to little details about the creature itself.

The production was acceptable and cast did well while the atmosphere and foggy theme sticked the landing truly as it's definitely chilling to get stuck in a ship during a stormy night with a blood sucking thing.

Wouldn't recommend it for a second watch as it gets dull after the first time And perhaps just wait for a sequel.

Bad poker game
13 August 2023
Well, we've got big explosions, double agents, Gal Gadot as the rookie one with hidden capabilities and a tech nerd behind her, the villain with the accent and a couple of evil pawns within his hands, a highly dangerous weapon in the middle of it all, and yeah, it's starting to feel familiar, right? It seems like the recipe for an action-packed flick with a repetitive, superficial plot.big production, big places, but the same empty story with a hint of rough action.

Exaggerated ass-kicking from Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) accompanied by good chemistry between her and Jamie DornanIt takes us to a plot we already know is going to be honest.

Mid-action cheesy lines and laughter weren't at their best, with the dialogue being straight-forward and simple, and a good soundtrack blowing up most of the movie to hype everything up.

It seems like Netflix won't drop this formula for now, and if you aren't full of it yet,Go for the watch that you'll enjoy for the cast and good camerawork, but not anything else, I think.

Pay the dues
31 July 2023
It comes from the less known Israeli filmmaker Yuval Adler, who has a few class B movies in his pocket, a mystery thriller.

Fright night (a great freaking night, as Nicholas Cage likes to say) under the lights of Las Vegas

Starring Joel Kinnaman and Nicholas Cage, who is also producing, we are grabbed from the opening shot music and scenes of a moody typical night in Las Vegas, but you know, what happens in Vegas? As the story follows David,a caring family man (Joel Kinnaman), as he is preparing for the big night of his second child birth, but then gets mysteriously caught in a rough game with an unhinged stranger (Nicholas Cage) with red dyed hair to match the suit that goes with it.

As the unknown passenger switches between the seats from the back one to shotgun, you get the feeling that it's about to come down tonight while the cards start facing up, slowly building up the tension and stress throughout its 90-minute running time.

With the least unnecessary scenes and a good soundtrack, you're treated to a solid performance from Joel while he anxiously struggles to unravel the past as the clock is ticking, and Nicholas Cage's outstanding acting and terrific facial expressions as he throws cheesy but catchy classic lines and shows off with his smooth-ish dance moves and singing, and an awesome Cage Rage moment with his roof-bursting temper. Both of them carry the film to an acceptable direct ending at the moment that the screen is burning with exploding molotovs.

Similar to Michael Mann's Collateral from 2004 in many ways, with a lower budget and vibes like in Ryan Gosling's Drive from 2011.

Sympathy for the Devil delivers a good watch to enjoy while making you wonder: what does the sound of screaming rabbits seem like?

Aim for the stars
27 July 2023
Ben Affleck's semi biographical feature Packs up a great cast including himself, Matt Damon,Chris Tucker,Viola Davis alongside her real life and on screen husband Julius Tennon to deliver us a passionate story about reaching for the stars and much more.

Though it's a basketball movie with no basketball in it Affleck still manage to make it relevant in different aspects during it's almost 2 hour-ish running time.giving us the sense of nostalgia of mid 80s as it follows Sonny Vaccaro(Matt Damon),a talent scout and a nike's employee as he tries to save their basketball department from crumpling down by signing the all-time basketball legend Michael Jordan and creating the well known shoes series Air Jordan.

Damon's soulful acting keeps the movie running smoothly with multiple good lines popping up from many characters during the movie to shine light on another perspective in the sport's industry hiding behind the fact that maybe all of the movie is a huge marketing play.

You can't expect a Moneyball (2011) movie from this one but it does take a shot at it in a similar way.

A good oner.

Aftersun (II) (2022)

Aesthetic
20 July 2023
Hand in hand with nostalgia, the aftersun tries to tell us to Capture the essence.

Of a moment as we are in the middle of it and not when it's too late.

We go along with Sophie (Frankie Corio) while she reminisces about a lost memory that has now been found, where she goes with her father, Calum (Paul Mescal), to vacation in a Turkish coast area on his birthday, as seen by the footage taken by their camera from that week.

Sunsoaked days and breezy nights, playing some pool by a pool, and summertime's first kiss, surfing between waves of rural scenery, give the vibe of being stuck in a Polaroid Lenz.

Or in Sophie's eyes and mind.

Young eyes that can't see the hidden struggle within her father and a mind excited for the mysterious future-though it might be frightening-can't comprehend yet that the good times are fast times.

The simplicity of the story and dialogue And the soft acting goes nicely together.

To show us a coming-of-age tale.

Calum teaches his daughter about the rules of life and breaking them while she dives into a universe of possibilities, not knowing that the touch of a loved one might not always be nearby.

It's weird how we remember the smallest details about the strangest things as we go on with our lives.

Never knowing whether *the good days* had passed already Or are they far ahead?

Maybe the aftersun is a reminder for us to look closely and to dance one more time.

To a song we love with a person we love.

Passing down the mask
16 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
"Out of cliché comes opportunity for outside art" as samara weaving said before leaving too early, and well it's true for a couple of shots during this flick as screams and shouts get higher than the previous film in this long time running franchise.

We got to see more from Jenna Ortega the uprising star portraiting Tara, throwing punches and take-downs all over the place just at 5ft.1 or maybe a touch less.alongside her sister Sam played by Melissa Barrera who stole the show and lead acted in Scream 5 as well,as they try to solve this time's more complex whodunit and behind the mask mystery in matching style and a modern take compared to the original films.

Opening up with two wannabe rookies trying to pull off ghostface leads to a ghostface with a shotgun!

The story takes it all up a notch with good writing, nice soundtrack and really the best part, messier, harsher and more gruesome kills with blood spilled everywhere to match the vibe that a masked killer should give.

Creating an enjoyable cat and mouse game while showing old faces too like, Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere that climaxes to a cheesy and unrealistic, though an acceptable final act.

Taking the old story and tricks to the new world and trying to keep it alive, with more knives and stabs and Can be considered as a success, but not in every aspect.

Just make sure you don't pick up your phone while watching or who knows?

You may be the next!

The Out-Laws (2023)

Cool in-laws,old trouble
12 July 2023
Having fun in-laws can be something we all wish for,but not in this case for owen Coming from netflix and director Tyler Spindel Who worked on other comedy projects like "you don't mess with the zohan (2008)" And starring Nina Dobrev with some wild ink tattos, typecasted Adam devine ,Ellen Barkin from "animal kingdom" and the old 007 agent Pierce Brosnan showing up as a stylish father in-law

Though the production seems decent like all of netflix films but the story doesn't keep up with it and barely keeps you up during it's 100 minutes run,as it follows Owen(adam devine) and Parker(nina dobrev) marriage plan for a great weekend and wedding which goes sideways and bombastic when parker's folk show up after being away for quite sometime For vague reasons.

You sink into the weird funny air this comedy family-disaster brings in just the first few minutes as you hear adam devine's rusty singing abilities as he fits in his role as a plain devoted guy with no expertise at holding a gun and nina's simple superficial character bouncing around the thieves in Disguise Lilly(barkin) and billy(brosnan) edgy and reckless attitude.

And like every other mediocre flick like this we need a villain with a red killing button Which portrayed by Poorna Jagannathan And a bleech drinking detective trying to put the lame puzzle together and get his satisfaction.

You're in for some regular punchlines and a few good laughs, but nothing more with this repetitive comedy flick, though it can fill up the background for you while doing something better than watching it.

Nefarious (2023)

An eternal conflict
8 July 2023
Nefarious, which stands for wicked and evil Coming from the not very known movie producers/directors Chuck Konzelman And Cary Solomon and starring Sean Patrick Flanery against Jordan belfi in a closed, small And very uncomfortable space within a prison takes us for a sanity and belief questioning ride along it's 90 minute-ish running time.

It follows the story of convict Edward wayne brady(Sean Patrick Flanery) Or as he likes to call himself,Nefarious On his last day before execution as he gets one last chance of survival while being evaluated by a local psychiatrist,Dr.james martin(Jordan belfi) Who is trying to find out that is what he claims true and he's sitting across an underworld demon Or is it just another scheme to buy more time.

You go in,just like Dr.james martin with no idea of the person he is facing but soon with the stutter,Tourettes and extra disturbing behaviour brought up by flanery you will swiftly know what's the deal as tension rises up neatly while he sets up the whole tone of evil and darkness with his sarcastic laughs The two main characters and actually the two only important roles in the movie delivered a most believed act while throwing rounds of deep and thoughtful dialogues throughout the movie engaging us to think about what's right and wrong.

The atmosphere of the filming location implants the feeling of doomsday and lonesome as you get to see a couple shots of scenery Accompanied by great but passed down camera work showing the different aspects of nefarious as you find yourself immersed in the same hole, that the so called devil is caged in.

Taking a shot at an old plot that is already used up in many other dialogue centered films but with different point of views, it gets to the depths of the divine matters and what's behind the curtains till it reaches it's unsettling but fairly expected climax.

Who will win the fight between good and evil Or is there even a one taking place around us Watch and decide for yourself Nefarious is a supernatural thriller one-timer flick that will get you thinking about the Christ and Antichrist and the whole perspective wrapped around it after watching it But not for too long.

A trip at sundown
10 October 2021
It was actually better than expected from such low key movie.

Jason with his signature accent was great along with the rest of the cast And the story does seem repetitive and done before but it grabs till the end with a long gaze at the screen And the score is absoulately serving us with an impact to make the ride even more enjoyable.
