Idiocracy (2006)
7/10
Mike Judge is the king of satire
11 September 2022
Idiocracy paints a picture of the world that is at once uproarious and eerily prophetic. As society gets more and more comfortable, knowledge and ethics become of less value. Everyone mispronounces words, food is unhealthy trash, diplomacy is non existent and no one cares, everyone is obsessed with sex and guns, and a professional wrestler is elected president. What I give Judge the most credit for is his fearless takedown of advertising and how it has infected the zeitgeist. Business names are unchanged, and painted in a very negative light. It might all seem ludicrous, but it's a hilarious take on the path that our culture is walking and I give Mike Judge and company a lot of credit for this one.

Charming satire
7 September 2022
I was surprised by how funny I found this one. Gary Cole, Shelley Long, Christine Taylor, and Michael McKean are all treats, and the rest of the main cast are formidable as well. The way television portrays American family values across generations is a gold mine for satire, and what's great about The Brady Bunch movie is that it doesn't feel mean spirited. It simultaneously pays homage to and spoofs the original sitcom. Jan's pathological envy of her older sister is particularly funny, as are Gary Cole's speeches about family unity that seem to go in circles forever. This is a perfect example of what a spoof movie should be.

Galaxy Quest (1999)
9/10
A love letter to fandom
6 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Watching Galaxy Quest in 2022 feels great. It walks a fine line of poignant satire of classic sci-fi TV shows (Star Trek in particular), while also being respectful of the subject. Most importantly however, it's nice to see Hollywood being grateful to its fans for a change. The hero of the movie is a super fan, which is a nice touch. The cast is awesome from top to bottom, Tim Allen is at his best, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman are of course iconic, and Sam Rockwell steals every scene like he always does. Despite the final PG rating the parody never feels dumbed down. Any fan of science fiction can both laugh at, and appreciate Galaxy Quest.

The Fighter (I) (2010)
8/10
Great boxing, great family drama
29 August 2022
This might just be the best thing Mark Wahlberg has ever done. The drama here is more than tangible as we follow Mickey Ward, a small town boxer torn between his ties to his family and a path that he knows will lead him to being a champion. Ultimately straddling both lines is what makes him great, and forms his path to victory.

Christian Bale and Melissa Leo are phenomenal, and Amy Adams is quite good as Mickeys love interest. The boxing scenes are intense, and everything outside the ring feels authentic and lived in. The Fighter packs a dramatic punch that I would pit against any sports movie of the last two decades.

Suicide Kings (1997)

Fun, but messy
29 August 2022
This was a neat movie, a cool "botched crime" film with a lot actors before they were big and Christopher Walken leading the charge. It has twists, turns, suspense, dark humor, and plenty of style to go around. The problem is that the script doesn't necessarily reconcile all of these components into a viable whole. I was confused as to why two of the main characters were even there, and why any of them thought their plan would work. It felt like a contrived setup to get to a wild payoff. If you can turn your brain off this is a cool movie and a fun ride, but if not you're going to struggle with it. Maybe I should give it another watch but im not sure if it's worth the time.

Tarantino's best
27 August 2022
In my opinion this is Quentin Tarantino's best movie. The story is stripped back and lends itself perfectly to what Tarantino does best: hearty dialogue. And nowhere in his catalogue is the dialogue better than it is here: we begin with casual lunch conversation and end with a heated standoff, which tension ramping itself up all the way through. It's a visceral film, but not nearly as gratuitous as his other movies. Here, our imaginations give the violence all of its impact and it makes for a more intense experience. The fact that almost all of the film takes place in one setting is a perfect example of "less is more". I for one would love to see Tarantino make one more gangster movie before he retires.

Top notch sci fi action
27 August 2022
Terminator 2 is a fast paced romp through the pre apocalyptic world established in T1. This time around the T-800 is a friendly Terminator tasked with protecting a more hardened and ruthless Sarah Connor and her son John. On their trail is Robert Patrick as the T-1000, a new model of Terminator that can break itself down and reform as needed to accomplish the mission.

While I am in the minority of people who thinks the 1st movie is better overall, I do believe T2 has some of the best action scenes ever put to film. Every gunfight, and in particular the vehicular chases, are masterful and exhilarating even 30 years later. The story is tightly written and lends itself well to a nonstop chase that never relents. I will happily rewatch this movie for all of my remaining years.

The Core (2003)
6/10
Ludicrous but refreshing
21 August 2022
The Core has quite a few things going for it if you can get past the ludicrous science and lack of plausibility. As a disaster movie, it is somewhat refreshing to see the world being saved internally rather than on the surface or in space. The acting is mostly decent and Eckhart and Swank get surface level character arcs to work with. The biggest downfall is its very difficult to suspend your disbelief throughout, and the middle portion of the movie sags a bit as the vessel travels through endless CGI rock that looks very dated. Overall though, it's a fun little movie that's worth a laugh every now and again.

A goofy, gory romp
15 August 2022
After hearing so much about how "scary" this one was since the it came out I was surprised that I found it more...funny. Tongue in cheek humor runs rampant, especially with the police and the townfolk. The gore is pretty extreme to be sure, but there is so much levity to offset it it was hard to get immersed in either tone. The main characters are profoundly dumb, even by horror movie standards, and a lot of moments and characters serve no purpose, but it gets salvaged by a sense of self awareness.

Rain Man (1988)
8/10
Funny, smart, and bittersweet
14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Rain Man was the movie that taught me what autism was when I first watched it two decades ago. Revisiting it today, it's still every bit as touching as I remember it being though I know recognize what a great story it is. Tom Cruise has an underappreciated role as Charlie, whose arc as man who starts the film selfish, narcissistic, and bitter, learns what truly matters in life and begins to understand humility and compassion. The man of the hour award however, absolutely goes to Dustin Hoffman as Ray. He nails the idiosyncrasies and finer details of autism, a brilliant mind that struggles with the simple functions of emotion and daily life that most of us take for granted. The ending isn't necessarily happy, or sad...it's just real. Seeing Charlie say goodbye to Ray is heartbreaking, but as a viewer you know that he has changed enough that he won't forget or abandon his newfound brother. While small elements of the first act feel a tad dated and/or contrived, it's a very minor complaint when stacked against the whole, especially when Levinson and company stick the landing so perfectly. This is a movie everyone needs to see at least once in their life.

Sleepers (1996)
9/10
A powerful, epic drama
14 August 2022
Being a big classic De Niro fan I can't believe I missed this movie for so long. Sleepers is a powerful drama that chronicles the story of four boys who are the victims of horrible abuse. When they grow into broken men facing their trauma, the story shifts gears to a revenge story about manipulating a trial to get true justice and closure. The arc of the movie takes you through a litany thoughts and feelings that affect sexual abuse victims over the course of their lives in a powerful way. The courtroom plot is also very compelling, albeit not exactly rife with external conflict. The struggles take place in the characters hearts and minds and the film conveys it beautifully.

If I had to be super critical I'd say the ultimate fates of the four leads lacks punch because we know it from the outset. It's a small complaint though because the road to get there is so compelling. Sleepers is a powerful, sweeping drama that everyone should see at least once.

Outbreak (1995)
7/10
Standing the test of time
14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Outbreak was a scary movie when I watched it as a kid more than 20 years ago, but after the pandemic it seemed even more unsettling as an adult. It's a compelling story, where the real antagonist is an unseen enemy that causes those in power to become reactionary and dangerous. The cast is stellar, and it still looks great to this day, with some great helicopter scenes and harrowing battles with a communicable disease. The parts where you have to suspend your disbelief come mainly in the third act, where the heroes are able to evade the military with relative ease, and the triumphant victory feels just a little too neat and tidy. Otherwise, Outbreak is still worth a watch in 2022.

Prey (I) (2022)
7/10
Pretty good
12 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Prey is not the best Predator movie in the franchise, but it isn't the worst either. The stripped back story and setting lend themselves well to the universe. The cinematography is great, as is the action and gore.

The acting is passable, but nothing exceptional. The predator itself looks really cool, though how it gets defeated requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. Fan service moments fall flat, and the over reliance on CGI is very immersion breaking, with the exception of one awesome scene where the predator fights a bear. Overall, Prey is worth seeing for its setpieces and great action, but won't set the world on fire the way the original film did.

Twister (I) (1996)

A fun, tense ride
8 August 2022
Twister is a lot of fun, and for a movie coming up on 30 years old and it still looks and feels great thanks to the use of (mostly) practical effects. Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt are both terrific leads, and the story is brisk and exciting. It often calls for suspension of disbelief, especially in the third act, but if you can get past that and enjoy the setpieces it's well worth it's two hour runtime.

Sweet and good natured
7 August 2022
I appreciate that The Goodbye Girl was such a good natured, feel good movie. I never rooted against either of the two leads, even if it is hard to relate to someone who acts for a living. Richard Dreyfuss is great in everything, and the snappy dialogue makes you feel like you're watching an actual play on stage.

Cool Sci fi movie
29 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is just so cool. It looks great, and Sam Rockwell gives a commanding performance(s). It makes for some great conversation as well, about cloning and the manufacture of memories. At times it can be a little unnecessarily confusing, but it's good enough to warrant multiple viewings for clarity and coming from someone who doesn't usually rewatch things, that's a compliment.

Equal parts harrowing adventure and tragic war film
24 July 2022
I cannot believe how long I've been sleeping on this movie, what a fantastic film. WW1 is a remarkable backdrop for tales of bravery and human struggle. Following the main characters on their journey to relay intelligence that could save thousands of lives is exhilarating, and it is aided by incredible cinematography that puts you in the middle of the action. 1917 is a true achievement and one I would recommend to anyone willing to listen.

Nice and safe, but nothing special.
23 July 2022
The Bob's Burgers movie is serviceable, it breezes through its runtime with decent jokes and character beats the way any episode of the show would. It was a fun time but fails to reach the heights of other full length movies made for animated series like Beavis and Butthead Do America, or South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.

My only real gripes were the music and the animation. Neither felt true to the TV series, and neither improved upon it. The music lacked silly improvisational feel of the songs usually featured on the show, and the "improved" animation was distracting and inauthentic. Luckily the character work and humor were still there, making this a nice outing for existing Bob's Burgers fans, but unlikely to draw any new ones.

DeepStar Six (1989)
4/10
Disappointing monster movie
19 July 2022
I love monster movies, and on paper this one should be right up my alley. Unfortunately, most of this movie is dull and without suspense. And even when the chaos did start up, I still wasn't invested in any of the characters except for the resident screw up, Snyder. The interior sets also look quite hokey for the time when compared to films like Alien.

On the plus side though, the monster does look pretty cool, even if some of its scenes are completely ludicrous. The exterior shots of the underwater vessels also look quite good for the time and budget, making me think that Deep Star Six had a lot of wasted potential.

The Faculty (1998)
6/10
A wild cocktail of a movie
18 July 2022
I haven't seen anything quite like this. The Faculty is a weird alien invasion movie peppered with 90s tropes, over the top violence, and a cast of celebrities before they were big names (for the most part). It's hard to argue that it comes anywhere close in quality to the films that inspire it, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but it does maintain a distinct entertainment value throughout that makes it worth watching today.

Better than the previous movie...
17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The biggest thing this movie has going for it is that is considerably better than the last one. However, it's still a mess with a plot that's way too convulted for its own good. It doubles down on the possessed family members, follows a love triangle, and has the evil force beaten by going back in time to change the natural course of events. It's all a bit messy, but still a lot more fun that other Amityville films.

Ludicrous but enjoyable
16 July 2022
This movie is mainly fun for the disaster scenes, the tornadoes ripping through L. A. in particular was a great scene. The science isn't there, but that's not a deal breaker. The real problem I had was that after all the wanton destruction, the final third of the movie felt rather anticlimactic.

The Amityville Curse (1990 Video)
2/10
One of the worst movies I've ever seen
16 July 2022
This isn't just a bad Amityville movie, it's a bad movie period. It wastes Kim Coates in a script filled with characters making dumb decisions, hokey twists, and zero tension whatsoever. The movie goes to great lengths to make us care about characters that are insufferable while failing to move the plot forward. When the action does pick up it feels more ludicrous than scary. This is an Amityville movie in name only.

Good popcorn fun
16 July 2022
I often yearn for the days when movies were just simply fun. Independence Day is a gung-ho, All-American, alien invasion disaster movie that never tries to be anything more serious than that. That's Roland Emmerich at his best, the stakes are present but not overbearing as we watch gleeful destruction of cities and monuments, and root for the good guys to take out the alien force with abandon. Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum are all insanely likeable leads that make this movie a fun alternative to most modern media.

Reign of Fire (2002)
8/10
Does exactly what it sets out to do
11 July 2022
A post apocalyptic story in which dragons are the cause if mankind's downfall is definitely a premise I can get behind. In the wrong hands it could have gone bad in many ways, but Reign of Fire works thanks to a script that doesn't try to cheapen itself. Great pains are taken to make the threat to the heroes tangible and I for one, am grateful that's the route it took. The cast definitely helps too, Matthew McConaughey steals every scene he's in as the pathological dragon hunter Van Zan and Christian Bale is always a treat to watch even in the more tempered role as Quinn. The supporting players do their part as well, and the action is great fun even if the CGI hasn't aged tremendously well. This is a fun movie to revisit every so often.
