Last Ball (2001)
The whole package, and then some.
So many independent films would be great, if only the acting were better. Or the script tighter. Or if it was lighter, or heavier. Last Ball somehow brings it all together.
The acting is notably good; the emotion of so many scenes lingers with you long after the credits roll. It's beautiful to look at. It's well-directed, well-written. And most notable of all: it's a well-rounded story that is character driven and funny. It does not pander, but it sure does make you laugh.
It's so rare to get the whole deal in one film, but there it is. Last Ball delivers.
Waking Life (2001)
Beautiful, but not great
There is no denying the beauty of the animation of Waking Life. It is gorgeous to look at. I just wish someone had had a chance to edit the script.
Linklater reminds me of the kind of guy who was amazing to listen to when you were in your late teens, but as you grow older, so does what he has to say. If it doesn't bother you to have undeveloped characters appear out of nowhere to spew his lines, then it's worth the trip. But if you're looking for beauty and a story, look someplace else.
