The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024)
Rushed
I've just completed the entire season, and I can't help but feel that this spinoff is rushed. Significant characters are quickly disposed of, leaving little room for intrigue. Despite being absent for years, Rick fails to even mention his former family. The explanation for the brainwashing subplot feels too brief. Overall, a greater number of episodes with more thorough explanations would have made more sense. The sporadic jumps to the past seem unnecessary; dedicating full episodes to those moments, akin to the approach in the original series, would have been preferable. Despite its flaws, I still found Nat's character compelling. The action sequences were well-executed, but character development was lacking. Michonne's decision to spare Rick seemed illogical given the circumstances. Michone, the old one would of have just killed this Rick off.
The Three Musketeers (1948)
all for one and ... much too long
This film is a prime example of miscasting.
No lovable or even hateable characters.
Dull and very boring sometimes.
Bland acting brings us a bland film, even with this star(s) stricken film.
I liked the colors, but that don't make it a good film.
The comic relief, wasn't so comical. The villain, I found, was often likeable.
It was quite an athletic film, though.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Blown away
A Star Wars themed series, with the feel of the original trilogy. With almost the same creatures. Cool dragon BTW. Obi Wan imitated him well. Now we got to see him alive. Well not for long. He to will turn into a skeleton soon(a New Hope). With characters who believe in themselves as being part of the Star Wars universe. Thus, great performances. Great story.
Samurai Sensei (2018)
Samurai Plot hole
This is a nice, family friendly film. No bells, no bling, no CGI, a ton of plot holes. A quaint film about the "founding fathers" of the modern Japan.Sakamoto Ryoma and Takechi Hanpeita. Two characters romanticized in this film. A little(shallow) history lesson and a very little story about honor. Still, good enough though. Protagonists are quite likable in this film, yet very unlikely that it would be such an easy transition for a hitokori, which Takechi Hanpeita was in reality.
Dark Phoenix (2019)
Or how opportunities are missed
It was an entertaining (7/10) film but...
For the die hard x-men fans kind of a letdown. The solar flare vs the dark entity. Where was the pure thought Phoenix vs a vulnerable/unstable one. The hellfire club vs the B'dari....
The time line reset in X-Men: Days of Future Past was the reason for this rather bleak Dark Phoenix, I guess. To bad, the Dark Phoenix Saga did not deserve this treatment. It would have been nice to see Phoenix destroy an entire solar-system but saving the universe, etc... (2/10 as an x-men worthy film)
Shen tan Pu Song Ling (2019)
Jackys Ghoststory
This is in the magical realm of Jackie-land. Cgi could be better, same for the dialogues. But all in all a funny and good Jacky/love-story. Without the over the top(as in great) fightscenes.
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Dis
It's better than the Green Book, Spike Lee was right to be disappointed for not getting the Oscar. Lol. The movie is not able to find his own genre or pace for that matter. I'm not from the USA, nor have I read the book. But, from what little I know about race and racism in America is that this film was, yet again(Green Book), to political correct. It felt often like a 2 hour whites are stupid and evil movie. There was nothing wrong with the performances; they were as good as could be expected from this. Flawed and all over the place. Where did the black panthers go??? After the rally, they just gone. The K.K.K. were an afternoon tea club. For me its just the vision of a director who just doesn't like people. And I don't mean just white folks. Maybe it's time for Mr Lee to stop making these (reversed) racial prejudice films.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
GoT to be WOW
A very clever and not so predictable ending for all the main players.
Had to be like this. GoT does not have happy endings for everyone.
Clever, clever. And yes, some episodes in the last season were rushed which made them look lacking the accuracy we have grown accustomed to.
Still I don't get those low ratings. But like the show, it surprises me. Up until the end.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Wow
I sit and watch
As tears go by
Marianne and the Stones already knew what I felt seeing this awesome movie, wishing I was young again. And Freddy living,....
Green Book (2018)
Buddy, buddy
This a way to shallow buddy movie. It's just not offensive enough to make this relationship work. Instead, you have two almost cartoonesque characters who just don't bring the magic. The main promise of this film is to stay political correct towards everyone. Playing it save is not always good I guess. So is bad writing. Unbelievable scenes make it a worthy contender for the Golden Raspberry Award. But I guess me not living in the USA, is the reason why I don't get the Oscars. And yes I do like both actors, especially Viggo Mortensen. They were just cast in to a perfectly boring/shallow film.
Message Man (2018)
John....
John Wick, Indonesian style without the budget but same body count.
However, this is and will never be as good as The Raid (1 & 2), but it helps passing the time. It's just "clean" fun.
The Revenant (2015)
Awe....I meant Yawn
Never have I seen such a concoction of really awful scenes in one movie. I saw this painting, no film when it came out and thought it was terrible. So I waited a while and saw it again. Surprise: it was still awful. DiCaprio was given an Oscar for the best dialogue in a film...not, for the sheer survival skills that would make Bear Grylls jealous ...YES. Because surviving a bear attack. No not Grylls, is one thing, but being wounded as he was or ought to have been, he survived severe hypothermia, a 200 yard drop from a cliff, and vicious attacks from the camera. Because that many close-ups and not get wounded? He was the great undamaged victor. Was it all bad. Yes... only reason for the 3/10 is because of the stills, not all camera-work was bad. Not the photography of the beautiful landscape they raped...eh used to make this film. They simply should have watched "Man in the wilderness" a little bit better story-wise. Come one with those actors, the end result is utterly saddening. Maybe next time Leonardo, maybe....Hollywood gives you an Oscar for best actor in a role which deserves an Oscar.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Mad ???
Well, first off, I would like to point out that this film is one of the best paced action movies I've seen in a long time. Hence, the 8/10. But it isn't a Mad Max film. It's kind off a late spin-off, there were many after the first Mad max films. And as thus I can appreciate this film. But as a Mad Max film, I give a solid 2/10. Why? No real explanation or exploration (character building) into Max's ever growing madness but some vague flashbacks and references to the old Mad Max films. The over the top action-scenes, greatly cgi'd though, were most of the time too long and only there to fill up this movie with yet more action, so that the story was left floating around(which explains the lack off ). But as said in the beginning it's an action film and there is plenty of it in this movie. Too bad they lure people into thinking that this film is the real deal and feed on the franchise. I did find myself at the end of this film hoping that Max would leave, and he did. There is at least that. Disappointing Mad Max,film but great stand alone action flick.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Better
Well, I went to see this film with few aspirations or expectations. Although not sticking to the book, I found myself quite amused most of the time, not touched like LOTR's though. The film's pace was good. I wasn't as troubled as I ought to be by book to screenplay-changes (Thorin's death, Tauriel's love-story,...), because I wanted to give this film a chance. There were just to many anger issues: the brothering in midst of a fight till the death.Galadriel was..... AWESOME.
Edit:Saw the extended versions so now the story made more sense and so does the film. Gave this one also more points.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Not so good
By far the worst, until now of the series. Bad script, bad acting, bad cgi, .... 13 dwarfs and a hobbit are on a journey, enter the elven forest and not for long they are discovered by the elves....but a whole army of cgi orcs are not, they can advance, surprising elf sentries!!!!! Bilbo is back as the fifth(fourteenth) wheel. As ever distrusted by Thorin. Where is the friendship gone that was there at the end of the first Hobbit journey. The orc mercenary Bolg walks around as if he just crapped his pants.(Way to cgi)It's all just to visible. Makes the film look cheaper. Like the barrel ride downstream. Legolas was older here than in the LOTR films. Serious!!!Morgul tips(blade for Frodo, arrow for Kili) have jet to become as lethal as in the first LOTR film. I was amazed by the sheer number of orcs killed by elves, dwarfs and a hobbit.I was afraid there weren't going to be enough left for the announced war. Was it all bad. No, the ring making you Dr Doolittle was fun. The bear creature was fun in an adventurous way. The becoming of the lidless eye was kind of great. The dragon was fantastic. The dialog between Smaug and Bilbo was great. Ian the Grey was good as ever and managed to carry the overlong scene at Dol Guldur. The be-headings were a funny addition, however useless they seemed.
Edit:
Saw the extended versions so now the story made more sense and so does the film. But still bad cgi,... Gave it a couple of more points. Extended is like with the first LOTR necessary to appreciate this film a bit more.
Johnny Sunshine Maximum Violence (2008)
Booo
Giving it a 7 out off ... Yeah off what. Mindless in any regard but still I kept watching it.OK,how could I? I don't know. Maybe because I like zombies. Must have been thinking, that snuff and zombies mix well. They don't. This is not what the film is about. Or is it? Anyway,it was awful, looking at it as a zombie-film. There was no torture porn in it.Just a bit of torture soft-core. As for the effort. Wall-E had a more desperate feeling hanging over it. Oh yeah, here few zombies were killed. They were IMMOBILISED. Knife in the gut and down they went. But still moving, twitching is a better word.Unable to get up. The fighting was Jackie Chan at his best. NOT. My mother is faster and she is 80 years old. Like Shakira says...."Don't bother"
The Mist (2007)
How to ruin a perfectly good film.
For starters, this is a good film(except the ending). Although we're almost sucked in the mist immediately, here the swiftness of this action doesn't bother me.This is because in this film we search the same reasons(why, what)along with the cast. The secrets are not handed out immediately or even entirely. This doesn't hurt this movie. It makes him stronger. With some pretty strange characters. I don't agree that the gospel quoting hag is annoying to the film. She brings her act in a convincing way. Like most of the cast. Tensions are being buildup slowly, the fear is sensed out throughout the film. And then a corny, tear jerking ending..........that ruined it for me.Which explains the low rating. This film with his rightful ending . Well.....
Shichinin no samurai (1954)
Akira
This is film-making at his best. Akira Kurosawa did what other great directors tried to do. To make an action/drama/love-story/martial-arts/historical correct and so much more film, making it last for almost 4hours,without us ever getting bored. Not only did he do that,it opened the road for many clones(good and bad). The way Kurosawa films had lots of influence on later filmmakers. JOhn Sturges to name one. But you can hardly make a good film without good actors.Well Toshirô Mifune might be the most known in this film, but here Kurasawa makes him work for his money. Each and everyone of the actor's put down first-rate performances. Giving a title for the best actor,is impossible. They all are excellent. Flawless. Divine. This truly is film-making of the best kind.OK,I'm repeating myself. Giving to much credit, even if it's justified ,looks silly. But not here, not for this film/actors/director/photography/........ For those who haven't seen it yet. Don't buy the dubbed version. Buy the original B/W with subs. You will not be disappointed. Oh,yes. It's Kurosawa's best. Film do not get any better.
Unknown (2006)
This is not Saw
It has nothing do do with Saw. It's just state of the art paranoia.Shows us that you can make a good film without loads of money, special effects, monsters,......"Who are you? Who the f#*^ are you?" That's what it's all about. The film takes 95 or some minutes to explain that to us.And it's not about a kidnapping(of course it is,but it's secondary to the film). Putting us cleverly on sidetracks, whenever we get to close. This is an intelligent film with loads of good actors. Also proofs us that a film doesn't have to be 2,3 or more hours long to get the message across.Yes true, five men find themselves slowly awakening from gas cannister leak, caused by a (gun)fight and discover they are in the middle of nowhere with little recollection of how they got there, and more importantly who they are.We all have a deja-voe feeling about this. But this feeling has been handled in a way that doesn't allow you to grasp it from the start,or even closer to the end.Furthermore people have been telling it looks like Saw. If you are going to compare every film in which people have been locked up against there will to Saw,just because in Saw there were a surgeon and a photographer tied up together in a place against there will.Well there are a lot of films with a hint of Saw around.Don't get me wrong Saw was an excellent and even better film then this one. But it is just not the same type of film,or story or whatever. The same thing applies for RESERVOIR DOGS, or any other mentioned film. Well it has elements of all those films, but then again; it is difficult to make an original feature these days without referring to other great films.Great films that use elements of other great films, and so on,and on,...... Original,NO
Good,Yes even excellent at times
Remake,let's hope not
Sequel,let's hope not
300 (2006)
Spartans,today...... you made us like this film.
Well, I saw this one some time ago. I was blown away by the sheer epic grandeur of it. I went to see it knowing that almost the whole film was filmed on blue or green screens. But, I liked Sin City very much, so gave this one a chance too. Boy, was I in for a treat. A visual feast if you like. And yes you can argue about rhinos, elephants, other beast, but here they all added up to giving us this great film.Well the plot:it's known to all and everyone,so give us a break. It's about 300 SPARTANS + several hundred other Greeks(Thespians and other Slave soldiers) against the whole Persian army or better known as "The Battle of Thermopylae". Bare in mind that it all takes place in an era of myth and magic (Minotaur,3 headed serpents,Medusa,...and tons of other Greek based mythical creatures). Looking from this perspective, they have done a super-job keeping the level of mythical creatures low. Thus bringing us one hell of a film.Furthermore it's a loyal adaptation of a very graphic novel. So over the top-NO.If you liked the novel, you should like the film. The first half hour gave us an insight in the Spartan society. Then came the action. The action-scenes were beautifully orchestrated. The action-scenes were more fast-paced then those of LOTR. Even with the slow-motion in it. What more can you ask .Ok once more:say it all out loud. WHAT A GREAT FILM
Masters of Horror: Imprint (2006)
Great story,bad actor
It's without any doubt, Takashi Miike. Great directing skills,as usual. Great story with a nice twist. But Billy Drago somehow manages to be the worst actor in the whole lot. Incomprehensible most of the time. OOVVEERRAACCTTIINNG!!!!! Whilest great in the Wes Craven remake, where he seemed to be enjoying himself. Here we find an overacting, uninspired BD. Just look at the scene where the deformed whore announces him the dead of his beloved one. No real emotions there just bad acting. I only started to like him in the last twenty minutes or so. I guess his acting here is like his career. Many downs and once in a while an up. I gave it an 8,because I like Miike, but I should have given it a 5 or a 6. A movie stands or falls with his actors, and here picking out Billy Drago was a mistake. Still a good story though.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
After the Oscars
Didn't Hollywood see the same film as I did. I mean, OK it got it's share in the prizes but.... they seem to be only scraps. The performances of Ariadna Gil and Sergio Lopez to name two are amongst the best I've seen in 2006. I know competition was tough but this film was certainly better than Babel,Letters from Iwo Jima and the Queen. Or was it simply because it was a foreign film;for which it didn't get anything either. Maybe it's because I'm a great fan of Del Toro's film's. Maybe it's because I like European or Asian or non Hollywood film's better. Well not all but almost all. My feeling, this film didn't get what it deserved. Some real Oscars. But heck THAT'S Hollywood FOR YA !!!!
