Mediocre and Superfluous and Empty
16 September 2012
It is a mediocre and superfluous movie about an extended family with members from four different generations living together. Style is neither real, nor surreal, maybe a little bit of both, probably trying to achieve to be one of those so called absurd comedy movie. Throughout the movie, people keep killing their lovers for stupid reasons, but never for jealousy, or passion or any apparent motive.

The movie feels like a replication of Leyla and Mecnun, a TV series by the same director, but with more obnoxious characters, and it barely rises above an episode of a TV series in terms of originality and story telling. Characters do not appear to be sincere or believable, most of the time they look theatrical and cartoonish and they constantly try to be funny or witty, in my opinion, makes them way more obnoxious.

Currently, the movie has way higher rating than it deserves, probably because Turkish viewers have tendency of giving higher ratings for Turkish movies.

A war movie with surreal undertones
21 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Realistic war scenes are blended with surreal elements which gives a taste of bloody fairy tale rather than an action movie. You will have sad moments, also funny moments and lots of forced emotional scenes.

What bugs me most, in multiples of scenes, you sense a presence of some kind of omnipotent entity which interferes with lives of characters and changes natural flow of events, because of that, in the end you expect some kind of peaceful resolution but alas, war is inevitable. Unlike earlier, this time they have something to live for, something to fight for, also unlike earlier they can choose their side, and they embraced their death bravely.

It's message is just a clichè: Doesn't matter which side we are on, we are alike and war is bad.

I didn't like the ending. It just doesn't make sense. US wasted several soldiers over one. In the air while parachuting. Also villagers could turn the lights off or go off somewhere to escape bombardment. For me, it is a far fetched drama.

I think Korean movies have bad taste of choosing actors for westerner roles. Maybe good ones are expensive to get.

Dumb Killer, dumber cops and a lot of coincidences
21 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
While I was watching this movie I wondered why is everybody playing dumb, the pimp, cops, victims. The whole movie relies heavily on chance and I always hate when a twist or closure is achieved by a mere coincidence. Twists by chance in this movie are too many to count.

"no signal" on the mobile is a pure Hollywood clichè.

You just don't take refuge in a shop when you break loose from a psychotic killer, especially not after you received a beating to the head with a hammer. And he runs out of cigarettes and shopkeeper hands him a hammer, that is not irony, that is bad idea.

Let loose a self-confessed murderer of 12 people and have him followed by only two cops, one was incompetent and the other is too naive, he disappeared before her eyes. Good thing for her, otherwise she would be dead too.

Also if you are going to save a life or catch a criminal you don't run across the whole city, just take a cab.

Another thing that bugs me, incompetent cops, they never interrogate the suspect properly , all we see lots of blubbering and shouting and some occasional pissing contest. This is a crime movie but we don't see cops following any clues such as missing people, mobile signals, plate numbers all we see a pimp sniffing around the city and pimp's guy, also dumb, with lots of keys looking for the right gate in a large area.

If you ask me, the real trouble is the poster of the movie. You can always speculate if it has some deeper meaning but for me, it's completely awful and unintelligible and uninviting.

I like Korean movies but this movie didn't satisfy me least a bit.
