Justice League Unlimited: Patriot Act (2006)
The Seven Soldiers
This is one my favorite episodes of JLU. All the featured heroes have their roots in the Golden Age. The opening black and white sequence features Spy Smasher, a hero created at Fawcett Publications (along with Captain Marvel). The band of heroes substituting for Superman at the parade are Green Arrow, Stargirl, S.T.R.I.P.E., Vigilante and the Shining Knight and the two sent in as reinforcements are Speedy and the Crimson Avenger. This group is a modern incarnation of the Seven Soldiers of Victory, the second oldest assemblage of heroes in comics history, with Stargirl substituting for the Star-Spangled Kid and the modern incarnation of Stripesy. And the four kids who keep butting in are the Newsboy Legion: Big Words, Gabby, Scrapper and Tommy.
D.C. Cab (1983)
A "Stupid" movie...
D.C. Cab is one of my favorite "stupid" movies. By that, I mean you just turn off your brain and don't think about what you're watching. The cast of D.C. Cab is a hoot; Max Gail as the loveable goof, Adam Baldwin as the earnest young man, Mr. T as the strong, moral force and the young Bill Maher, Paul Rodriguez and Marsha Warfield. And Gary Busey steals every scene he's in with his non-sequitor dialogue. Very little of what he says makes sense, but it's funny. But D.C. Cab does have a moral, that if you really believe and work hard, you can make your life better. It's a fun movie, a good way to spend a rainy afternoon. And stick around for one final scene after the credits are over.
Megaforce (1982)
Megafarce
A truly horrible movie. A waste of time for all involved. I can only remember one decent line in the movie. A high muckety-muck asks a black agent listening to music on headphones, "Earth, Wind and Fire?" "Vivaldi." "Spring?" "Summer." Other than that, the movie is total garbage. The concept would have worked better as a comic book or animated feature. This is definitely one of those times that the actors were doing it for the paycheck.
Spider-Man (2002)
Amazing...to coin a phrase
A terrific movie. I'm not a huge Spider-Man fan, but I know enough about the character to say that I did not find any flaws in plot, casting, characterization or continuity. I always thought that Tobey Maguire was an excellent choice for the "everyman" hero an Kirsten Dunst is a real hottie. I also find it interesting that the Marvel stable of heroes are the hot movie properties (Spidey, Blade, X-Men and the upcoming Daredevil and Hulk), while the DC heroes, owned by a movie producer, languish in possibilities.
Victory (1981)
Fun, but inaccurate
I saw Victory when it first came out because several of my friends were soccer players. It really is a fun movie, the soccer action is terrific and the cast is very good. Stallone, Caine and von Sydow all shine and Pele is good in his debut. However, the movie is really inaccurate historically. There is no way the Germans would have allowed such a large gathering in any occupied city, let alone Paris, for just what happens at the end of the movie; the fans riot. In reality, the players would have ducked out at halftime and made good their escape. Pride as athletes be damned, this is war.
