2010 (1984)
Good film, but nowhere near the original
A rule of films is NEVER try make a film sequel to be better than the original. It sometimes doesn't work in your favour, well in my opinion. Although there may be VERY rare examples of sequels being equally as good as the original, but NEVER beaten.
(2010 v 2001) only seen this film once, i thought it was a good film and as many people i see that have commented on 2010 say, this film basically EXPLAINS 2001, which i must say i'm GLAD i've seen 2010 to help ME understand 2001, as BRILLIANTLY complex that 2001 is.
2010 has very good visual effects also, but 2001 equals them, although 2010 is 16 years younger.
I would watch 2010 again. But anyone who thinks 2010 is better than 2001 must be kidding themselves (sorry to say)
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
The BEST western EVER
This has got to be, for me the best western film ever made. Got it on VHS and now DVD, I never tire of seeing it, a timeless classic. I always enjoy hearing the famous opening title theme. (it's 10 minutes into the film before anyone says anything). the film revolves around the 3 main characters, Eastwood, Wallach, Van Cleef. I thought Eli Wallach was brilliant as his role as tuco/the ugly. and Van Cleef as the the bad, with those eyes, was the perfect baddie.
The film really could be summed up as 3 gunslingers on there search for $100,000 of gold coins in a grave. Wallach knows the name of the cemetery and Eastwood knows the name of the grave. Van Cleef finds out by torturing Wallach when Eastwood and Wallach accidentally become P.o.W. The 3 men end up in the cemetery where there is a great showdown, one of the best the camera zooming into all 3 mens eyes and the music as well, classic stuff. Van Cleef ends up getting shot and Eastwood and Wallach split the gold.
Westworld (1973)
Super sci-fi film
This is a GREAT film and I'd give it a rating of 9/10, ahead for it's time, and a film which I think influenced the likes of The Termintor. I have seen this film many times and never tire of it, It doesn't look as if it's ages that much, despite being made in '73.
It uses a combination of sci-fi and western that blends bizarrly well.
I think this is one of Yul Brynner's best films, especially in his later years.
Brynner play's a lifelike robotic gunslinger in an all black outfit (the same one he used in the magnificent seven). Richard Benjamin and James Brolin also star as 2 wealthy men who pay to go to this theme park (which has 3 themed towns/areas).
It is Man v Machine in a great battle of wits etc. As there just to much going wrong with the machines for the technitians to handle and of course all hell breaks loose with robots/androinds on the brink, not responding to commands etc.
I don't wan't to ruin the film too much, if you may not have seen it, but for me it's well done for the time, stands the test of time, a decent story line to it all. and I think it will be a great film to watch for years to come without it dating badly even in another 15-20 years. It for me is still very much influential.
The Omen (1976)
One of the best horror films ever
The Omen, for me is one of the best horror films EVER made. I preferred this version to the new one and it still stands the test of time.
It's amazing that by letting you see the deaths by photograph's of Jennings (david warner), before they happen like, the nanny, the priest and Jennings himself. It's very well done in this way, and although you see the photo's before the deaths the deaths are still shocking.
The only deaths that you don't know of are of course damien's mum and dad, that would be spoiling the film a bit.
The most horrible death scene is the decapitation of Jennings, it is shocking and has got to be the first of it's kind. Deaths/injury's in order: The Nanny - Hangs herself The Priest - Gets impaled Damien's Mum - Fall's from the stair rail - injured Jennings's/Photographer - Get's decapitated Damien's mum - Get's thrown out of hospital window 7eral floors up. Damien's father - Get's shot.
Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)
Another GREAT car chase
I think i have rated this film almost purely on the car chase towards the end the rest of the film is'nt to super, although it is v good. A film for all film goes who love a good car chase, which deserves 9/10.
The car chase towards the end IS 100% real where the stunt person(can't remember his name) driving the yellow mustang (when he spun off the highway)DID get hurt and spent time in off recovering.
Probably one of the best car chases of the 70's and very influential. The chase lasts some time compared to some others which last for only half the time.
If like me you enjoy the thrill and excitement of car chases captured on film then buy/watch this
French Connection II (1975)
Brilliant acting by Hackman
Although most don't think the 2nd french connection is as good as the 1st, I think is almost equals it, VERY under-estimated film and I think one of Hackman's best acting.
Hackman, (Popeye Doyle) starts off in France this time and is put into a country he is un-use to, as there is a language barrier. Hackman almost immediately starts out his quest to hunt down "frog 1" (Fernando Ray).
And how ironic that Hackman ends up on heroin when frog1 and his henchmen get hackman, and that is where hackmans acting comes into it's own. You can see a Hardy New York cop become forced into drugs and turns into a druggie needing a "fix".
Thankfully hackman gets rescued from this and is taken into a police cells where he's forced to go "cold turkey". Watch Hackman's acting here as he looses the plot and you can see what drugs can do. AMAZING, you are taken in by how realistic Hackman's acting takes you on a journey.
Finally Hackman gets back to his normal self and once again is on the hunt for frog 1. No prisoners this time. All coming to a great ending by a foot chase v tram in Marsille. where hackman chases frog 1 all the way to the ending of a pier where he finally guns down his man.
Star Wars (1977)
Super, one of the best sci-fi's
The original star wars has still got to be the best sci-fi's ever made, now 30 years old. George Lucas was on to a winner with star wars and these first 3 star wars are him at his best.
The story is about Luke Skywalker (mark hamill) who buys two droids - c3-po and r2-d2 from the sand people, who unknown to Luke have just came from an imperial starship, Darth Vader is looking for these droids. (Anyway to keep the story as brief as i can.) Darth vader comes looking for the droids, kills lukes foster parents, Luke finds obi-wan kenobi (alex guinness) and old jedi. Obi-Wan takes Luke under his wing as he tells Luke that Darth Vader killed his true father (in a way). Luke is determined to train as a jedi so he can kill darth vader and avenge his fathers killer.
The French Connection (1971)
Brilliant film, with great car chase
This has got to be one of Gene Hackman's best known films, got him an Oscar, although his best performance i though came in French Connection 2.
The French Connection has a lot to offer a drama, thriller, drugs, car chase etc. Hackman plays Popeye Doyle a hardy cop, who's ends up chasing a drugs baron, played by Fernando Ray (Frog 1). Hackman is determined to get his man and of course we know of the subway scene where Ray & Hackman play mind games jumping in and out of the carriages, but Ray comes out on top. Frog 1(Ray) hires a hit-man who tries to gun Hackman down, but misses, hackman chases after his would-be killer, it ends up in one of the best car chases filmed, although it's car v overhead train. and this car chase IS as real as it gets, no stunt people were used, no streets were shut down etc, which adds to the excitement. the would-be assassin ends up being shot by Doyle(Hackman).
Towards the end of the film Doyle find the hideout of the drug smuggled and frog 1, but once again frog 1 ends up outwitting doyle and escaping
Bullitt (1968)
One of McQueen's best
No doubt this is the film all car chase people rave about, so will I, I'm not the first and i won't be the last. The car chase in Bullitt is probably, if not the most influential car chase and the one most people aspire to equal. I think McQueen done all the driving himself. Although I have seen the whole film through several times I always enjoy skipping to the car chase, what a great buzz.
The rest of the film, for me was very good.
Robert Vaughn & Robert Duvall star as well, but as usual McQueen is Mr Cool and steals the show.
Car chase gets 10/10 Rest of film - 7/10
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
The BEST of all the Star Wars
What makes this film great for me is the lightsabre fight between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, Brilliant 10/10 for that.
Luke also meets Yoda, a small, very wise master jedi who teaches him the ways of the force and how to use it etc.
One of sci-fi's greatest quotes is when Darth Vader tells Luke that HE is Luke's father, what a great twist.
Obi-Wan told Luke that his father Anakin Skywalker, now Vader. Obi-Wan tells Luke that he was telling the truth from "a certain point of view", a near truth and explained that Vader Decided to follow the "dark side" and ceased to be a jedi. Obi-Wan explains that Vader is more Machine and has had his mind brainwashed by an evil emperor sith lord.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Influential film, must see if your into sci-fi
Probably the best sci-fi film in the 60's and wouldn't be bettered for until star wars 9 years later.
2001 is VISUALLY amazing, watching the movement of space-craft, the effects are second to none, now a days that would be done with cgi etc. Watching "jupiter, and beyond the infinite" section, where it looks as if your travelling at the speed if light through space, i was amazed.
The only downside to 2001 is trying to understand it, especially towards the end.
It's hard to believe that 2001 is now nearly 40 years old, yet still looks fresh. Got to be in the top 3 best sci-fi films EVER.
Didn't realise there was 24 minutes & 22 minutes that there is no dialogue until i read the "trivia", must be a record.
