I can remember liking Doc Martin maybe 10 years ago. Or probably a longer ways back? But since I've gotten older, watching it now doesn't get a positive reaction out of me. It might have something to do with my tastes changing, but I think it's because I was too young to notice how poor the show was. It has low entertainment value. Which makes it surprising that it managed to last for so long. My biggest complaints are how unrealistic it is, as well as the revolting, leave-nothing-to-the-imagination, and quite honestly, unnecessary depictions of the characters' various injuries and sicknesses.
Martin Clunes (who seems like a very friendly and outgoing person in real life) plays a doctor who faints at the sight of blood, and is unable to maintain relationships of any kind, platonic or romantic, due to a complete absence of social and interpersonal skills. The man hates everybody. Plus he's working in a small, Cornish community, where all of the people are dim-witted, which only fuels his misanthropic attitude. He has no emotions whatsoever. He doesn't smile or laugh. I wouldn't feel comfortable even seeing him for a routine checkup. Despite his inability to show any semblance of care or love, he somehow manages to impregnate the village's primary schoolteacher, Louisa Ellingham (Caroline Catz). Guess she caught him on an off day when he was happy.
That's a major downfall for me - when a show lacks realism. I know it's fiction, but please, if you're gonna go through the effort of assembling a cast of human people, and have them experience so-called real life situations in the story, then put in the effort for it to make sense! It's not a cartoon. Secondly, I would really advise people not to watch this while they're eating, because the villagers' medical emergencies are just too graphic... But then again, I am squeamish, so I don't know if those scenes are objectively disgusting, or if it's just me (I'm the type to start throwing up if I see someone else doing it), but I think it's safe to say anyone would feel grossed out after watching a person drop a knife in between their toes, followed by blood shooting everywhere. What a turn off. It's kind of weird they would put that in something that's supposed to be a comedy.
I have no interest in it, neither the reruns or the episodes I haven't seen. Quincy had more compassion than Doc Martin, and he was a coroner! There's so many other British programs to watch that are actually funny and won't have you covering your eyes.
