Usually we see American made films and they follow a certain pattern, while foreign films seem to us being from 'left field.' This film was more foreign, not because of sub titles and language, but of HOW it was made. We are seeing the characters though eyes that we are not used to seeing from. This is quite similar to "All Quiet on the Western Front" in how we are sympathetic to the principals.

One is glued to the screen from EVERY scene. The 'reality' of the action is very strong and moving. We almost feel what it is like being Japanese.

The sound quality is superb! When the bombs are falling from planes it is like being there, having been a veteran myself.

This movie should be nominated as best picture at the Acadmy Awards. Clint Eastwood steps out of good into greatness in this effort.

Poor Casting
31 December 2006
This film has one of the WORST casting jobs I have ever seen! Matt Damon is TOTALLY wrong for the part! Even though he is 36 years old he still looks like he is fresh out of High School. Eddie Redmayne, who plays his son in the film is only 12 years younger than Damon and in the role looks more like his brother than son. It was disconcerting to enjoy the film in the scenes where they were together.

In addition Angelina Jolie was also miscast. I kept expecting her to don a 'super hero' costume and fly.

When will film makers of today get it that the glamor stars of today DON'T belong in serious films where character is more important than glamor?

One more thing........ Even though I love LONG films, this one is about an hour TOO long. I hate falling asleep in a film, paying good money to see it........ yeah, I nodded a few times.

A supurb engrossing tale

It is great when you find an old movie that you have never seen before, and I have seen many. This epic is one of broad scope and adventure, well balanced with good and evil aspects. A film of this quality could NEVER be made today and not maintain an unprejudiced view. Bravo!
