Joker (2019)
What a movie!
It's so easy to stick with the winning formula and churn out another hit. I caught this on a flight home after a long day and was mesmerised, halfway home before I blinked again. I watched it again after 18 months and it was even better than I remember.
Strong plot, brave direction and a central performance as good, in my opinion, as anyone has ever performed on film. From the first frame to the last Phoenix is truly magnificent as a 'loner with a mental illness". I guess not everyone is going to enjoy this movie and the film makers were brave enough to do it anyway. I REALLY loved it, in case you hadn't realised...
Tyrannosaur (2011)
Darkly brilliant
Some movies aren't easy to watch. They don't make you warm inside. You don't laugh out loud. These sound like reasons to not watch them, and often that would be true. But Tyrannosaur is so much more than just a dour look at life. It's a stark, raw slice of real life, of people I've known, of people damaged and struggling just to get by day to day. This movie is beautiful in it's honesty, horrific in it's truth. It's also very touching, about real emotions, real pain. I was spellbound.
The Baytown Outlaws (2012)
So what if it's rubbish?
So, a lot of movies offer you an insight into things you would never otherwise have known, or bring you an emotional journey that uplifts, leaving you thoughtful and even re-educated.
This is NOT such a movie.
It's not particularly original nor well written, it's packed full of clichés and it's all been done before. Better. What this movie offered me is escapism and a few laughs, plenty of action and I'm OK with that. Was it well made? No. But I give it a 7 judged on what it is. It entertained me. Sometimes, that's enough.
