Mann's film presents us with a soldier's existential journey when set afoot in a wasteland of real and or imagined dangers. The film's narrative posits that without purpose in life, there can be no meaning. In the end, rules are malleable and dependent upon the observer's eye. So, are we mere pawns within a much larger and unknowable game of life? Mann's multi-layered film leaves the viewer with much to think about.
