Pride and Prejudice (1940)
Absolutely Awful
Could there possibly be a worse adaptation of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice than this absolute drivel! Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is probably more accurate to the spirit of the novel. It takes a literary masterpiece and reduces it to a level of complete garbage. Laurence Olivier shows how brilliantly he could have played the role in a decent film, and the actor playing Mr. Bennett is pretty good too, but the rest! Not that it's altogether fair to blame them for the travesty of a script which shows no understanding of the genius of Jane Austin, for the production and direction which destroys the charm of the original. It is just terrible!
We Joined the Navy (1962)
It was a simpler time
Found this film absolutely hilarious when I saw it in the cinema aged 9 or 10. Like most films of its time it hasn't aged well. Compare with most of the terrible Carry On films. Rating is for its value as a period piece.
Inferno (2016)
Similar to Angels and Demons
An exciting film in the Angels and Demons mould but less predictable with it being less obvious who were the goodies and baddies. The opening is suitably confusing and poses a lot of questions in the viewer's mind as to what is going on. This is then revealed bit by bit as the story progresses with the different forces for good and ill changing as Langdon pursues his quest. It lacks the number of clues to be found in A&D and DVC but this is no bad thing as the film might have become as formulaic as Dan Brown's books tend to be. Many have criticised the changed ending, but this has happened with both the previous adaptations and it's not as if it's great literature that must be preserved.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Intelligent evocation of the cold war
An intelligent film for an intelligent audience which captured the era beautifully. Writing, directing, design, cinematography and acting were all first rate. I had wondered how the book and the TV series could be cut down to two hours while keeping the slow burn pace and sense of intrigue. It managed it very well. I will enjoy watching this film again in the future as well as enjoying the BBC serialisation and reading the book again. Perhaps it helps to have been alive in the UK in the 50s and 60s and to have been aware of the politics of the time which saw the exposure of Philby, Burgess and Maclean. While I thoroughly enjoyed it I can understand completely that others might find it boring. It is slow moving and it's not always clear what's going on - criticisms that were levelled at the BBC version at the time it was made. But I have enjoyed them both very much.
