Moartea domnului Lazarescu (2005)
The death of dignity. What a show!
I thought the film, above all was a brilliantly crafted, perfectly paced film. Its narrative was so well developed that the film, like life, lent itself to a lot of interpretation. What I found most intriguing was the power dynamics in the whole medial system and then by extension in the society. The colourful old man with his cats in his apartment is the king to start off with. He has supreme authority, he's the owner of the house. He enjoys freedom to drink, to live the way he wants, and he's not about to entertain anybody's objections to the way he lives his own life. The moment he requires someone else's help, he loses his authority. The neighbour who's better than him is now in control. then the nurse, then the doctors, then the doctors, then the doctors. every time as one person loses his authority, Mr. lasarescue becomes more and more insignificant. because he becomes more and more dependent. By the end of it, he becomes so insignificant, that when he's lying limp on the stretcher, stripped naked, the camera holds him for a moment, and then, it does not even matter whether he's dead or alive. The entire process, his entire journey in the film is a constantly gradual degradation of his independence, his freedom and his dignity as a person, as a human being. This entire journey is the death of his personality, his significance. This is The Death of Mr. Lasarescue.
Can't wait to see more from this director!
Batman & Robin (1997)
i wouldn't dare to watch another batman movie!
I come from a country where Mithun Chakravarty stars in B grade films where he splits an approaching bullet with a shaving blade killing two goons on either sides. but trust me, i've never seen a worse film. it was so painful to watch this film on television, i can barely guess the horror of watching it in a movie-hall. If you've heard of 'it's so bad, it's good' forget it coz this film is 'so bad it couldn't be worse.' the animated television series was soooo much better!it was more human, more thrilling and just better made. i have heard that nolan's batman returns is a really good movie, but HBO or star movies play only this movie repeatedly. The trauma of this movie was so intense that i'd be scared to watch another batman movie ever.
La science des rêves (2006)
I died!
I'm not going to use any words that try to analyse this film. I'm going to share my personal experience regarding this film. While i was watching this film, i forgot that there were other people around me. This has happened to me only once before, when i watched Bergman's Cries and Whispers. It's a very strange comparison, but the degree of involvement i had with the movie can only compare there.. nowhere else.
After I saw this film i could not use any words to talk to people for about 10 mins. it took me around half an hour or 4 hours to gather my wits and make sense of the world around me.
Any work that hits me like a knock out punch is work that defies my logic and humbles me, makes me lose my superior position as a paying viewer and helps me touch myself in some way. This movie hit me like a sock in the jaw, and i thoroughly enjoyed my submission.
