A new height for low brow humor
7 May 2006
It is worth the rental price just to see marionettes have sex. They aren't even anatomically correct!!!! Not to mention Kim Jong Il singing about how he's a lonely little guy. All the while the nefarious Film Actor's Guild or F.A.G., plot to take over the world, because they have acted like they run the world so why not. The two funniest moments are, of course when Janeane Garofalo's head explodes, (because, hey, aren't we really expecting that every time she starts bellowing about some evil conservative anyway?) and the never ending spewing of vomit. Which, of course, begs the question: just how do you make a marionette vomit?

LazyTown (2002–2014)
I think this is a fine show for children
6 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I am a nanny, and severely limit the amount and quality of television watched by the children I care for. So I pre-viewed lazytown before they saw a single episode. Personally, I find it a fun and valuable show for pre-school through school age children. The town is populated by puppets and receives a visit from a little girl named Stephanie. She is a human while the other children are puppets, because she is the only three dimensional character in the town. All the other children are simply interested in one thing, a kind of archetypes of children. The adults in town are similarly one-dimensional. Sporticus, another human, comes to visit when Stephanie needs help getting the local children out of their rut and out of doors. Robbie Rotten is also human, as an equal foil to the "above average hero" Sporticus.

The theme of the show is doing the right thing, not the easy thing. Even the five year old that I care for has figured that out. He pointed out that "Robbie Rotten works too hard being lazy!" As for some of the comments I have read on this site, I would suggest that you check your sources. In the camping episode, there were two girls in one tent and three boys in another, all camping out in Stephanie's back yard. As for her costume, while it is a fantasy laden look, it covers the child from neck to ankle. She is wearing leggings.

Personally, I think that if you want your child to watch a show that has a great message, infectious music, and gets them up off the couch, check out Lazy Town. Or better yet watch it before you let your children watch. But, as I always tell the families I work for NEVER let your child watch T.V. alone. If you are too busy to watch, find something else for your child to do. And if a show is too banal to at least snag your interest as an adult, it probably isn't worth your child's time either!

The Favorite (1989)
A Good rainy day movie
25 April 2004
I have to disagree with the former review. While it has been a long time since I have seen this particular movie. I can think of far worse ways to spend an hour and 45 minutes!

It is however, a movie that has a hard time fitting into a category. As an historical movie, it is highly fictionalized (although it is based on a real person who did in fact bring Christianity to the royal family of, I believe, Turkey.) It has too much gore to really be a romance.

As for the acting, I really liked F. Murray Abraham's performance. Amber O'Shea could be seen as rather Lackluster, but I generally prefer an understated performance. Ron Dortch, as Tulip, was really good.

One final word of warning. While I saw nothing in this movie that was not included to further the storyline, I did recommend this to a friend who was highly offended by the sexual nature of a few scenes. But hey, the movie was about a young European girl who finds herself married to a Turkish Aga, and conceives his heir. What can you expect!

Peter Pan (2000 TV Special)
10/10
Great Improvement
18 January 2002
I have seen several productions of Peter Pan and this has to be my favorite. It has the lighthearted appeal of the original story, with colorful and imaginative sets and costumes that are a joy to see. While children can enjoy the story as a new experience, those of us who are adults can enjoy the acting skills, as well as the stunning special effects. While they may be commonplace on most videos which were movies, the flying alone is a wonderful example.

While I know that there are those who see Mary Martin as the ONLY Peter Pan, in the spirit of Peter Pan, I just have to say "phft-ft-ft-ft!" Mary Martin was always just Mary Martin playing a role. While with Cathy Rigby, I actually found myself forgetting that it was a woman, and not a young boy playing Peter Pan.
