Green Book (2018)
Watch this movie.
I saw Don Shirley speak in college in 1966. At the time, I just thought he was a damn good pianist, using bass and cello to create a unique sound. And when this film came out, I thought: "I saw this guy!". I know the critics are harsh on this film, but I sat there for two hours, completely engrossed. I know there are stereotypes. Maybe it's because repetitive anti-minority and racist actions have become so commonplace that they seem like stereotypes. I believe that the performance was made by these two wonderful actors. There is a subtlety to this film that surpasses many other films of this type. Yes, there are southern cops here; yes, there are men's toilets that are prohibited; yes, there are simplistic views on the racism of white New Yorkers. But what I got was a realistic representation of a developing friendship. Shirley is blunt and self-absorbed; Lip doesn't understand anything most of the time. And I believed in them. Watch this movie.
The Bunker (1981)
It's really about how different characters deal with the impending end in different ways.
Traudl Junge from Munich was happy to be chosen as Hitler's secretary in November 1942. Next - April 1945 in Berlin. Soviet troops are approaching and shelling the city center. Traudl is still working for Hitler in his bunker. The children operate the guns. Hitler is issuing unrealistic orders to understaffed, overcrowded units. These are the last days of the Third Reich.
This is a compelling account of Hitler's last days. He is a feared mad man, delusional and human. There are other characters in the film, both inside and outside the bunker. There are battles here, but they are not made for excitement. It's really about how different characters deal with the impending end in different ways.
