Amazing piece
6 August 2023
Niamh Algar plus interesting visual effects, non linear story and a message which is both deep and on the surface- why would you not want to see this little gem. I don't know where to watch it other than on Youtube and so when I watched it the quality was low and effects not quite so effective as I expect they probably were but I cannot verify this so for the moment it isn't a 10 fully. However I have rated it a 10 because it probably is and I have no proof it isn't if not a killer 9 because despite the low definition the action was deeply absorbed, the storyline given that it is a piece without words is stunning and aided by the lack of words fully which cannot be said of many things. The difference between men and women good and bad and the action and camera work used is beyond what one would expect of such a short film. Awesome.

Autistic representation done almost right and Epic
29 June 2023
Though Samuel Bottomley is not autistic, so far as we know and does not have the same traits as Louis, he portrays and is portrayed in a positive light and it tackles the inherent ablism of society. Though we see a Temple Grandin poster, who though in some circles lorded suggested that a cure should be found for those with higher level support needs that herself which is problematic, he says that no autistic person is the same and there is a narrative about how he should get to decide his future even if he is scared of things others aren't and living alone may be difficult and passing school so also, he still get to live his own life. He isn't seen as babyish but a guy with different needs. Big thumbs up for that aspect. Then we have the awesomeness that is the twisty and turny plot, Colm Meany's face and the differing perspectives and heart rending moment which will make you cry. Mary is a character who is well matched to Louis and Daniel bringing out their beauty and complexity and can be compared to them in this regard too. No character is without a role or some form of basic personality and everybody's morals are on show. Its indie, funny, sweet and a worthwhile watch.

Spaceship (2016)
8/10
It isn't a story but there is life within
12 June 2023
Spaceship covers issues of drugs, parenthood, mental health, teenage culture and rebellion, death, and life. Though many say that the movie is hollow and doesn't fit their pitch of a story about a father trying to find his daughter, I find this claim inaccurate. I believe he finds out who his daughter is and grows more able to have a relationship with her, and that is finding his daughter. We see a man struggling and a world struggling and find empathy and understanding. Despite objectively little happening, the world can end over nothings when you are a teenager and though it is just their lives there are giant emotions, complex relationships and high tensions. The abstract nature and the poetry creates something you wish to devour and may leave some hollow and with unanswered questions... but I fear that might be the point as we fear for their futures, worry over trival empty things and cannot connect to any fully- we feel as the characters do. It makes us want to find out more in real life and apply the lessons and our new found fears or acceptance that our fears are average into the real world and that is a good thing. It may keep you wondering for years but it is beautiful and sweet and stunning and an experience.

A Kind of Spark (2023– )
10/10
Sparky, honest and sweet
10 April 2023
A Kind of Spark really is exciting and joyful as a piece. Though it is a childrens show it is certainly one that anybody of any age would enjoy and gain something from...which you can't often say. A truely family watch the characters of all ages are relateable and thete is no friction between the age groups only an encouragement to speak out no matter who you are when something is wrong. Addie is wholesome and kind something autistic people cannot often find in the way they are presented. Though she and all of the characters you root for have struggles and are sometimes slightly harsh on another they are the best humans anybody could wish to meet and their kindness is something th world could do with copying. It also though dark in places dials down some of the fear of the book and is about joy and family at its heart. As a neurodiverse person it is everything I could hope for and more.

A beautiful balenced piece on homophobia
17 March 2023
This piece is altogether different from any other short film I have the privilege to see. Just stunning!! Firstly the use of the birds, visual effects and sound in general really, was amazing. There is such a tension using almost the same vessel for tension as shiva baby. The piece considers who is affected by homophobia and the social barriers present for women. Its a piece about humans and humanity as well as queer lives. I loved the greys with which all the characters, bar Mrs Willis, are painted in. I loved the setting the story and the powerful nature of the 15 minutes you watch of their lives. A snapshot and a pleasure.

A Very Dangerous Doctor (2011 TV Movie)
8/10
scary so not 10 out of 10 but a doc and a half
17 February 2023
Regan's journalistic and honest documentary style is certainly a treat for anybody who watches his work. He is an Irish Theroux. In this piece though you can feel his struggle not to take a side, you can quite easily see both sides of the story and understand the serious nature and the nuances of the situation. He makes us aware that all of the accusations made about all parties are serious and that more supervision conversation and safeguarding of children is needed in all cases. However he still presents the brutal and horrible facts of this case and allows an entirely open dialogue. Far more ethically clear, and more obviously sensitive, in many ways than some of his works, he doesn't hide from the truth nor his methods of getting it. Though his method of playing his obtained footage to the other parties to start conversation isn't advisable or especially sensitive in some ways, perhaps we can forgive his endeavours given that no damage is done.

Funny, real and very Marcus
22 January 2023
Laura Marcus's on person guide to comedy, in the form of a short film about a girl who decides that she will binge drink. Now found on vinemo, Marcus's piece explores the complexities of modern life as a teenage geek, having conversations around alcohol, make up and self perception, as well as mental health and pressure. She uses make up to play all those in the piece just as she did in her other short film(laugh lessons bbc v plates) drawing on stereotypes and working with her highly expressive and physical style to enhance her comedy. Her unique style showing off the emotions of all those she plays. The lighting and filming is exquisite and the realism in the ucas and application process made the piece wonderful as a British teen. Its very worth watching.

The Doctor Who Hears Voices (2008 TV Movie)
9/10
A brilliant performance from Wilson
2 January 2023
The film is standout because of the sensitive and realistic portrayal of psychosis and bipolar disorder by Ruth Wilson, the aim of Leo Regan to be neutral letting the audience in while not harming the community, the lack of triggering material in terms of triggering an episode that is present in other documentaries when people attempt to make neurotypical or non psychotic people understand and the ethical good job they attempted. I disliked that Regan showed certain physical things about Ruth as it broke focus and that he himself had obviously triggered the real woman at points as I wish at the time awareness was higher, but not his fault as it was 2008 and it was perhaps bridging in a way. I don't think Rufus May can always be right and he does have his human flaws and that created a different lens but he means well and as a person dented healthcare in the UK for psychosis due to the government, lack of understanding still and the area I live he work is important and he is right about breaking stereotyping and that healthcare should be person to person, I don't need meds necessarily I need trauma therapy and anti anxieties because the Side effects are less and it targets the root maybe. Ruth shouldn't have to lose her job if she can work and though the lying thing is depressing sometimes its true.

A story about teenagers real teenagers
25 November 2022
Though there are more drugs than perhaps would be realistic at the holiday park this is a story about being a queer teen and working stuff out. AJ is like a real kid and the dynamics and struggles are what every British kid knows. Nobody is in the wrong and it truly builds empathy which is great to see. Honestly a great movie with a great soundtrack and is funny amongst the angst. It is positive about people who struggle with their gender and their sexuality without showing any shame in relation to these issues. So, watch able and the cringe is worth it because of the happiness and sweetness shown.

A Response to Your Message (2020 TV Movie)
10/10
Brillent
12 November 2022
A piece to spark thought in white people, and relief for black people. It shows the beauty of black culture and tells white people to be better and what is needed of them. It talks of the lack without creating further friction or guilt. It says not speaking is wrong, so you need to, and asking to be relieved of that guilt is wrong. It says to not ask to be saved from your wrongdoings and mistakes-it is just asking for white people to learn and black people to stop allowing us to continue and to live for themselves. It is a short full of beauty and freedom and is a great way to inspire white conversation on racism, without us talking about black lives or hurting black people by asking for more when we are the ones who should be giving.

Its a 7 because it is short and needs more
17 October 2022
I think for an underfunded show made of shorts about a band with very minimal ability to have a substantial plot vandullz does brilliantly giving crazy and colourful characters who you to genuinely want to hear more from. Also that van is killer I love her. There is so much soul and happiness and it is a really exciting look into a world. Its just about people and there is nothing more indie than that. The way that lgbt relationships and coming out is portrayed is wonderful and is the best advice for friends of a lgbt person ever. It is empowering and quirky and I would really recommend giving it a shot.

Psychosis & Me (2019 TV Movie)

A true portrait of psychosis
19 September 2022
It is a documentary which uses effects and cuts to mimic psychosis through inducing the environment and potentially delusions. One should be careful if you are psychotic as it is distressing however for those that aren't it is eye-opening. It is a truly beautiful piece that provides all the information and connection required to change our world forever- in particular in relation to racism and healthcare and treatment of psychotic people in pubic. It is a teaching resource that does everything for you. It is hugely emotional and true connection with the audience and us with the people Harewood follows as well as with him is found. If you are psychotic, it really does give hope and community as well as help to be brave enough to get support or on the website other resources, you could use. It is wonderful.

Sensitive funny sweet
3 September 2022
A teen spin off of Millie Inbetween is an odd premise because the characters felt the same age as me and I am still a child but yet they are swearing drinking and having sex. I suppose it feels a bit like grown-ish. So happy they made it through! Despite the fact I am a year or so off that stage it will see me through my future, and I love to see more of those characters. It is brilliant in its handling of issues that gen z is now starting to get to. It is a great watch because it is more serious about its messages than before but keeps that childish wonder. The future of tv, humanity and the actors looks bright. Loved it !

For anybody with a relationship with anybody
16 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A film which tells th story of what a family is. It stops the idea that some families are perfect or that anybody leaves childhood without being affected by those around them and pain. But it give the answers to the pain. It will make you think and it doesn't force forgiveness or feeling any way for anybody in your family. It is healing and it is wonderful. The conversation of trauma is also sensitive which as someone who has been traumatised is lovely to see.

Mustang (2015)

A story that respects the people involved
11 August 2022
Though Turkey is not all like the Turkey in the film, it is a look at sexism, vulnerability and strength with in rural place in a position of powerlessness. It isn't necessarily about the mistreatment of women at large being worse than any other place but about safeguarding children and ensuring that sexism is removed from our world. The backdrop may be Turkey but it could be applied anywhere, though obviously affected by that backdrop. It is a beautiful film that is sweet, heart-breaking and talks honestly about mental health, womanhood and childhood. Its not a good Turkish movie, it's a good movie full stop.

It is a very hard watch but if you can watch it I think you will find it is amazing. Like the Florida Project the narrative being from the eyes of a enormously talented young actor brings a softness, innocence and a way out of the story as well as an excellent way in.

Slow human unique and beautiful
30 July 2022
Through the eyes of a child - with very few scenes breaking this trend- it deals with diffcult issues but we as the audience are sheltered ( though the child/children couldn't be called sheltered) by the naivety and childhood joy which the piece centres itself around. It is well acted( the nicest Willum Dafoe character I have ever seen and Prince is a star honestly acting to the highest level), plays like real life, is emotional, creates a story often times not heard and doesn't villainise any characters that are affected only by circumstance. It is better if you know that the actions of the children are supposed to be their versions of attractions at Disney - and therefore does limit its audience connection in this way. However it is only better with this knowledge and though frustrating that a film about poverty targets those rich and privileged enough to have been to or know someone who has been to Disneyland ( and know what park has which attractions) it is a wonderful film that not enough people watch.

Warning: Spoilers
It is incredibly hard to watch but it is eye opening important and amazingly acted. You don't have to watch because it isn't a film like that but it is a great film. Honestly it was worth watching and i mean it. I felt all of the anger and fear. It is immersive and that makes it worth watching.

Sweet and honest
25 July 2022
Played like a straight best friend love story, with added queer, it creates a human narrative that anybody can engage with. The sound track is perfection and the taylor swift brings the queer romance. Its just the sweetest fun romance. Another park is that they look like real- though attractive- people and it doesn't reinforce sterotypes or weight ideals. Its just good.

it deserves a full length film honest
25 July 2022
Its a story about being young and male and though they are not perfect and they are just as angry and sweary and mean as any boys at 16, the misogyny is not excused but it is used to show that lgbt people can be anybody and to increase sympathy towards the lads that sit on the swings in the park. It just makes us aware teenagers are humans and as a teenager that feels nice. It has a good conversation about neglect and disability as well.

good quotes memorable and doesn't shy away from reality
23 July 2022
It is a real, but entertain look at the realities of London and racism and gentrification and gang violence. It is funny if very violent but it doesn't lose its edge in the crass mode of comedy that it might otherwise look like. It doesn't glorify being part of a gang but it increases empathy and that can only be good. Give it a shot and you will probably be suprised.

Its optimistic but also still based in our roots and that's cool
16 July 2022
We see queer youths act like queer youths and we see the traumas without there being any fetishization. It is a funny, sweet and strange film in keeping with the high quality content that comes out of screen Australia. There is no hiding from the fear and pain that affects queer kids and also the past our community holds but it looks forward. The girls are quirky and unique and their realtionship is asperational without being unrealistic. It could have been longer and more elaborated but it was very fun to watch and one of the best ones, romantic comedies with drama, i have seen for a while.

Thought provoking but still entertainment
16 July 2022
Thought it may not be accurate, it is a drama and therefore there are embellishments from what would be in a standard prison. However it teaches empathy and tackles all of the issues we on the outside think about and the welfare of officers and prisoners. It really is a worthwhile, and decent, honest neutral ish show.

Got me back to D&D
2 July 2022
There is a huge variety of storylines and its not all for me but there is something for everyone and it is the most fun you will ever have. Don't be put off by the fact that you are watching them play dnd. It is honestly immersive and once you have watched the first episode of Fantasy High you will be hooked. I disliked The & but it is interesting and many people would. Be careful before you watch if you dislike sexual or sweary things as some campaigns and episodes can be disgusting so it is probably best to be over 15 before you try it. You will want to be part of the story and play D&D after watching. You should give Fantasy High and Starstruck Odyssey a chance if nothing else. You wont regret looking at the highlights either. Its full to the brim with lgbt representation( asexual awareness is definitely there in fantasty for sure in case you thought it might not represent you). But it is also full of mental health representation and belly laughs too.

The closest representation of my gender yet
27 June 2022
The film has shown my that i can be accepted. It also educates cis people really comprehensively without it being purely education or dehumanising trans people. It provides a look at intersecting genders and sexualities and breaks the expectations that nb people are fighting against society or being heterosexual. Its beautiful and wonderful and is cathartic as.
