Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (2019)
The reason for all the hate this film gets? No idea. None.
This is a pretty different take on the Hell House trilogy. Like past I it has a much bigger cast that the part II and that helps lot. Part II could have been a cool movie but the small cast prevented that I think. Here we are back to a bunch of characters and this helps the film a lot to focus lots of different characters rather than just one or two.
Lots of reviewers have gone postal on the film and many of those complaining that it's not as scary as the others. For part I and Part III, the characters are a big part of the movie and whoever cast the actors needs a big pat on the back because it's the characters that make the films. Plus the underplaying of the 'monsters' so that when they do do something shocking it resonates i.e. That clown, one slow head turn and I'm freaking out!!
I love all 3 films in the Hell House trilogy and have watched them a few times over the last few weeks and will probably continue to do so over the next few weeks.
The Legend of Lobo (1962)
A beautiful film about animals in the wild and how they live.
Someone here said that his father-in-law wrote the screenplay for the movie. He must be immensely proud of him. My mother took me to the movies in 1962 when it was released and as an 8 year old I was gripped. Disney was in it's 'animals' stage and Lobo was one of the best. I hadn't seen the film again until earlier this year but it was as wonderful as I remember it. Over the years that song "Lobo, Lobo, Lobo, Lobo your name will survive..." was all I could remember but I remembered it a lot over the years so it was great to hear the full song once again.
I see there's a number of people here that didn't get it, probably expected a kind of Jaws with wolves. No. This is a scary yet heartwarming film and it's beautifully filmed, the narration is excellent. I loved the way Disney filmed the wolves and through editing created a story - they did this with their other animal movies also.
Once upon a time innocence meant something to a child, movies like Lobo helped create that innocence.
Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023)
Worst of the four films
I have grown to love all of the first three HH LLC movies. A the characters grew on me the movies became more enjoyable such that I watch them about every 3 months. Some things about the first 3 films:
The Abbadon hotel is a brilliant location as a) it's an actual Halloween experience house which gives a familiarity throughout the trilogy.
However, it is such a mazelike place that it's easy to get lost just watching the films. The house has a heck of a lot of character and this had added so much to the atmosphere all 3 films.
The cast of each of the three films are excellent. The first movie has the best cast with the other two not far behind.
Clowns!!!!
Evil clowns!!!!!
The 'Abbadon Hotel' is on the same street as I live in in Pennsylvania. I live on 209, Hell House is on 209; granted about 15 miles further east though.
So, that's the trilogy covered - for comparison issues!
Hell House LLC 4:
A mansion that looks as scary as my front room (which is a lot smaller). The two main characters are just annoying, particularly the 'main lead'. The clowns just don't hit the mark like they do in the other 3 movies. And having them in a really smart mansion makes no sense as much of the horror or chills are gone.
It gets some good chill bits near the end of the films but not enough to make you forget the squabbling liberated women that are supposed to drive the film yet drive it into the ground.
Smart direction by Steve Cognetti, poor screenplay by Steve Cognetti. I appreciate he felt it was important to move away from the trilogy but to change the local and the characters so much was a mistake. Maybe a less radical shift in story line and location would have been preferable. The only remote HH relates thing was a couple of clowns looking bores stupid!
Bring back the Abbadon.
Bing feng: Yong heng zhi men (2018)
It's not meant to be a Fellini film!
So many people here having a right moan. It's a costume drama, time traveling, Oriental movie. What was it you were expecting? It's a fun movie that you can enjoy without twisting your brain too much. Donny Yen takes so time off from kicking people's heads off and decides to use weapons instead. Fair enough, what do you expect from 17th century China? Jeet Kun Do?
So many people having a pop at the film yet it was just a bit of fun. Remember it was made for a Chinese market who's tastes are not the same as ours - it had sub-titles, probably from Brooklyn to English I suppose.
All those that have got their pants in a twist, try Last Year at Marienbad, that should be really thrilling for you!!
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
A Tick in the Box
Seen all the previous ED movies plus the TV series which is excellent BTW. Bruce Campbell and his little crew go nuts wasting deddites whilst keeping the humor meter at 11!
One thing that any Evil Dead movies with Campbell in it has is laugh out loud humor. The thing with the Evil Dead movies and TV series is that the (often) gross-out humor is matched by the gore so Sam Raimi managed to balance the two moods amazingly well.
So back to Evil Dead Rise and its main problem being all carnage with no humor. Once you realize that it's an Evil Dead movie in name only i.e. None of the magic the previous ones had brought to the table then it's very tempting to hit the Stop button. I stuck with it to see what they might come up with a surprise ending and I wish I hadn't. No twists. No Easter eggs and definitely no decent climax. An utter waste of time.
