The Great Wall (I) (2016)
3/10
Cringeworthy and plainly bad execution
20 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The bad: Terrible dialogue Bad CGI and fight scenes Terrible "story" filled with plot holes and plain silly actions performed by the characters Very boring characters, you are just glad when they die. Very "fantasy" (non historical) and not in a good way. The artistic choises for armour, weapons and such makes no sense and fits a video game or anime better than an "epic movie" which is abviously what they are trying to make.

The good Some very nice sceneries, especially with lots of soldier formations and the wall itself.

For one, why would anyone give up the actual wall (you know, a awesome defensive structure) to DIVE into the horde of monsters on a bungee-jump and try to spear them from an arm-length? While it sometimes was comically bad, I dont think this was intended. A low point for Matt Deamons carreer for sure.

Overly bias propaganda
5 February 2013
As someone who has dealt with this issue and the political implications and problems that comes from it, this movie was a sad example of one- sided propaganda.

Focusing mainly on emotions and again and again repeating what Palestinian terrorists has done (which in itself should not be denied of course). The movie mentions nothing on the actual geopolitical problem, the behavior of Israeli police, army and juridical system, abuse or violation of international laws such as laws concerning occupied territory or human rights. In fact, the situation is not even mentioned, instead Palestinians are portrayed as bloodthirsty, small- minded barbarians who want nothing but to (unprovoced) destroy the peace of the reasonable Israelis. Rather tasteless.

Movies can be used as a political statement of course. But as a movie that presents itself as a serious one, it comes of as cheap and tasteless.

Oh and by the way, Palestinians are to blame for the 9/11 attacks as well. Really?

A fair view on a sad subject
23 January 2009
Of course, political movies are always criticized by those who don't agree. But even though this film is pro-Palestinian it doesn't lie and its most certainly is not anti-Jewish (arabs are the biggest Semites group themselves so i think you mean anti-Jewish, not anti-Semite).

The makers were also tactical enough to choose many Jews to appear and criticize Israel. They bring up the issue of Jews being called self-hating for criticizing Israel. Is a ex-Cuban called self-hating when he dislikes Castro and his deeds, no, he's called freedom-fighter. Same with Chinese people who say no to Chinese oppression of minorities and other countries. Killing civilians is a SIN to someone of Jewish faith, and not something to be proud about.

The film can however, be called anti-Israeli. But i would say its not, as it only attacks the BAD THINGS Israel does, not Israel or the Israel people in general. Its the same thing as calling a film about the Vietnam war anti-American. Also the negative comments on this site:

1. Saying the films is simply lies and untrue (without specifying how) 2. Saying the film must be anti-Jewish and therefor must be dismissed.

Thanks guys for proving the film's point! This is how pro-Israels always want to move the focus from the real reason for the conflict.

The Israeli people will never be safe as long as they continue to give the Palestians good reasons to hate and fear them. And they really don't gain much from holding the occupied territories so whats the point?

Mediocre erotic nonsense
5 February 2008
OK so there's nudity, but hey, there's free porn on the internet for whomever likes it. And its just silly how they forced tits into every frame. I mean i was embarrassed, not from the nudity but from the far-fetchessness of the producers/writers of this piece of crap.

The movie is NOT funny at all, its just extremely predictable all the time. There is no plot, no dramatic content at all. This is way waay worse then the other pie-films and they arnt that great either:) If you're really drunk or maybe a 13 year old buy who are really obsessed with tits this might be acceptable, otherwise not.

May it forever roth align with crap of the same magnitude with regards Erik the questmaster flash MC

Predictable, nice effects, propaganda
16 October 2007
THE GOOD Nice effects, sometimes fun action (although overused to the brim, making it kinda less effective).

THE BAD And Americans ask how come (everyone else) think Americans are arrogant? This movie skillfully capsulates what the American propaganda tradition does in popular culture. Americans are (as always in these movies) brave and good sports (especially between ethnicity!), they are competent, all girls look like photo-models, the nice guy always gets the photo-model at the end (fulfilling his dream). The American dream is painted over every frame until you get sick.

And of course the Americans save the day.

Conclusion: Story way to predictable, movie made strictly "by the Hollywood book" (even so more then for example "indipendance day"). Its simply not very fun or exciting at all. This is like "300" but better made technically, which only gets the vote up slightly. Side-stories are corny and characters are veery stereotype. Feels like I've seen this movie before many times...

And my girlfriend is American so I'm not just anti-American by default, but this movie is just too dumb to score any higher.

Extremist religious propaganda
16 April 2007
A film with 95% torture-time. What craftsmanship! What storytelling! Now, this movie is just like those films released by Islamic extremists in the middle east, honoring their martyrs in the most tasteless manners. To me, its scary how so many educated people in a modern democracy (US) can see this film as spiritual/inspiring.

Any modern Christian owe it to their god and faith to strongly dissociate from this film, as it if anything spits on Christ work. And how can you say that this is NOT against any special group of people by saying "i just follow whats written in the bible"? The bible says a lot of things: Gays should be killed, women must sacrifice animals to cleanse them from the sin of menstruation and religious doubt must be punished with extreme torture. Gibson choose what parts of the bible he wanted to stress and must stand by this.

If you choose to look at this film completely non-religiously, it's just very pointless. There is no story, no character development, there is nothing to interest the viewer.

Mediecre film, fascist message
16 April 2007
THE FILM Despite some traditional slowmo and semi-interesting fighting choreography, the fight-scenes are AT BEST mediocre. Since we all know exactly whats gonna happen and don't care about the "characters" it's never EVER exiting; there is no tension. And the fights are all there is to this movie... Music and situations are at 100% adrenaline/drama all of the time, from first to last frame. So you kinda loose interest.

THE POLITICS Now, for the story/moral. If you'd studied history, you know this film is like a total ripoff of Nazi Germany, Pol Pot or extreme rightwing American propaganda. Which is kinda remarkable. This is a highly political, prowar, racism film, i see no other reason why it would be made in this way. If he just wanted to make a "fun action film" he wouldn't have done it so flamboyantly bias. And that he is doing it from an old comic book, what kind of lame excuse it that? Sin Sity did not have this problem (that was a good film, it was extremely "comic book stylish" but managed to work as a film anyway).

Even if you disregard plot, characters, politics, acting and music (and how the **** can you?) this is still a pretty boring film.

THEY SHOULD HAVE Cut together a 10min action-sweep with the best fighting scenes (there are about 10min of them, the rest is just repetition). I would probably give that a 7/10. But the film in its current form is just silly.

YOU LIKE IT? Sadly many people that like the film says "its just a film, but by the way: its kinda of like that in the world today/the film brings up a important issue these days". Sorry, but if you though this was a truly great/ revolutionizing film you should really think through who told you how the world working. You watch Fox News?
